One of the most effecting episodes of Bourdain’s show was when he went to Laos, and visibly cringes as a tourist shoves a telephoto lens in the face of monks walking in line for the morning ritual of alms collecting. “I’m afraid sometimes, we show these beautiful things, we help to destroy it”

to which Bourdain’s guide replies “It’s not a show, it’s not disneyland, help us show them (tourists) what the local people think”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOPB3ZVS1zI ——————————————————— Bourdain is gone and their are more cameras than ever at Luang Prabang. At a certain point does it become Disneyland? A copy of what it once was, everyone clicking and noone really knowing or understanding why?
The biggest battles in tourism, both now and in the future will be this clash of ideas, The technocrats wanting to develop tourism with measurable outcomes (Japan wants to DOUBLE the amount of tourists it receives to 40 million by 2020) Versus the idealists warning that if they do so, something ephemeral, that can’t be measured will be lost forever.
———————————————————— The more I develop a travel company based on creativity and the abstract, the more I’ve come to see that as we interact with a space, site or place that we change it from its original meaning and function. Liminality in other words .
These photos are from a bike tour I’m developing in Taiwan’s countryside. None of the sites are famous, well known, or sought after by tourists. But I absolutely love them. Unlike Kyoto, Luang Prabang, and other cities where the sheer amount of tourists have changed the meaning of the cities and their tourist sites, these countryside locations, temples and scenery exists for and honors the purpose of why they exist. There is no secondary meaning to chase, it remains as it was. And hopefully will be in the future.
I’ll be heading off to do some serious hiking (and thinking!) the next 3 days. Will post more when I come back.

Anthony Bourdain: I have been taking time for the right words to materialize. I realize the right words do not exist, so here goes.
.
Mr. Bourdain the cook, the author, the tv show host has passed. I never thought a "celebrity" would impact me in passing until now. Celebdom to me has been nothing more than the average working person having their job in media, tv/radio and etc. "No big deal", I've sneered many of times. Usually the deceased at the time, relevancy is far and gone from their peak. Mitigating the initial grief, we frequently segway into the futile conjecture of why. While writing, I could envision Mr. Bourdain cynically reciting the same conclusion. Yes putting words in someone's mouth is not suitable but this is how Bourdain was different. An iconoclast of television. "Did he ever censor himself on camera? What could the unedited version be like?", were questions pondered. Pretentious gone, candid in. He excelled in uninhibited discourse, a quality forgotten and shattered by my shame. He was the sonata to the canvas of the world. Standing out from the status quo sure, but as many have wrote, we thought of you as the close friend we never met. Imagining the scenario of how you could of been the wild informative uncle or the older brother my parents would've warned me about. The inner child who would've taken the consequences in stride every chance I got to hangout a little while longer. A person who you respect for they have unlocked a new wonder in life. A daydream.

Part one, to be continued...

To everyone I’ve ever had a chat with, who dreams of opening a restaurant one day. It’s tough love and, yes, statistally a bad idea. But how boring is only doing sensible things in life? If you love a little bit of craziness and love food and can love a restaurant despite petty diners and the crazy pressures, you should open one anyway. Give me a call first, I’ll join you. #Bourdain

"En un futuro no tan distante, en un L.A. obsesionada con la comida, donde los Master Chef gobiernan el pueblo como si se trataran de jefes criminales y la gente literalmente mata por un lugar en el mejor restaurante, se encuentra Jiro, un rudo y renegado chef de sushi quien busca innovar con fuertes ideas. I think about Anthony Bourdain a lot. I didn’t know him in person, so, of course I didn’t know how he “really” was. But I do think about him. As an aspiring documentary filmmaker, I was inspired by Anthony. He was (and is) a hero of mine. Documentary film is a kind of journalism and what Anthony did was journalism. Selfishly, I always wanted to meet him and I imagined showing him my movies and having someone so close in genre and life make-up to relate with. One major part about Anthony that meant a lot to me, is that he didn’t hide his struggles in life. When he was still alive, he was quoted as saying that he was amazed he made it that far in his life. I relate to that too. Depression and deep emotional challenge are no joke. I can’t speak for him about addiction, but I’ll say it for myself. Addiction is no joke. The depths and distances we can make within our own psychologies truly are like different universes. I’ve known the hell many times of hating it all so much, I wanted to leave. I’m not in that place anymore, but I know how quickly it can show up. Clarity and relief are priceless, worth working for, and they are some of the greatest joys in life. Emotional stability is a deep blessing and yet, it is not a given. When you find it, you haven’t found it forever, and you have to keep working for it. I’m not going to quick come up with some feel-good conclusion about “if only,” “then...” Anthony is gone from this physical plane and I’m one person who never met him, but to whom he meant something. His striving to find meaning and, through whatever pain he had known and was continuing to know that he maybe didn’t want to show anymore, to dare to elevate interest and joy, passion and enthusiasm for life through whatever feelings of hell—that is heroism. He was (and is) a hero. I’m grateful for all the work Anthony did to carve that presence of himself into the world, and to show the power and deep sh*t-ness of following interest and elevating what makes us feel interested. His twitter bio said “enthusiast” & that always deeply affected me. I have more to say, but I’m almost out of room. To be continued.

#anthonybourdain  #bourdain  #enthusiasm  #enthusiast

Normally I don’t do #foodporn but this Banh Mi is the best one we’ve ever eaten. And the restaurant is the place we first heard about chef Anthony Bourdain (1956-2018) who redefind our way of thinking about traveling. Bahn Mi still tastes great anyway. #hoian#vietnam#asia#wietnam#wazji#zasia#bahnmi#tasteofvietnam#travel#trip#asiatrip#holiday#line#worthwaitingfor#bourdain#nightsnack#baguette#vietnamesefood #vietnamesecuisine#streetfood#instagood#🥢🥢🥢

The last existing Popeye's buffet, in Lafayette, LA. It is said that Anthony Bourdain ate here for three days straight during the filming of the Cajun episode of Parts Unknown.

Tonight’s meal was brought to you by Giada De Laurentiis and the late, great, Anthony Bourdain.
We started with Anthony’s tomato salad, which, as a tomato lover, was delicious, although I feel I should have picked a different tomato variety, as the hothouse weren’t up to snuff taste-wise, but I digress, I still loved it though! I poured some wine out for the homie, Mr. Bourdain. Ok, full disclosure: I spilled a little bit. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Our main meal was a delicious selection from Giada’s book, Giada’s Italy, which I highly recommend, as we have enjoyed numerous great dishes from this book. We made the rigatoni with butternut squash and spicy sausage. Delicious! 😋

I clearly cant hide anymore. I am back home. And before I get all the hate I have already gotten you have no idea my life of my depression/anxiety. I made a concious decision to leave the money behind and be w my friends and family. Money can be made anywhere but happiness can not. I will take the L on Seattle but I will always have j d and Luna in my heart. A greater person could do it alone and I could not. I'm at my weakest point but that only means it's up from here. My greatest regret is leaving a great company and my family who made leaps and strides to get me there. I will not let yall down. #bourdain#lovato#miller #notmetoo

Waking up on June 8th, I had an immediate feeling that it wasn’t going to be a normal day. My body naturally woke me up two hours before it normally would have. I had a message from my friend Gabby in my DM’s reading “No, not Tony”. Everything around me froze. Everything fell silent. I went straight to google. “Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain, dead at 61.” My heart dropped to the floor and I had an out-of-body experience. I didn’t open the news article. Immediately I called my mom. There was no “hello”, just “oh no, you heard”. She told me the news of his suicide. I took the entire day in bed, constant tears staining my bedsheet. I had lost the most important person in my life to a disease that haunts me every day. People wrote messages of “how could he do this, his life was perfect! He had a daughter and friends who loved him!”. I became sick. We should never question him. Suicide is played as a selfish act, and it, in a sense, is. But the person who did it was suffering from something that he couldn’t work past. We shouldn’t be so quick to judge their reasoning. There is no logic in mental illness. Depression is an epidemic. So many people suffer and there is no cure. The only things we can do to help ourselves are all temporary fixes. Broken hearts hurt more for us. We need friends and constant support and love. I urge you today to reach out to all of the people you love and some you may only like and tell them how important they are to you. Tony’s life is an example to us all and his death was a warning to all who question. #nationalsuicidepreventionweek #breakthestigma #bourdain #anthonybourdain #partsunknown #noreservations #mediumraw

Living proof that Boracay in the Philippines is a truly magnificent place! I've been there twice before and i wasn't let down.

Sun, sea, amazingly warm people and the food... Let's not forget the food. Ok. I degress nevertheless its worth every while.

There’s nothing like watching “Drunk Uncle Tony” with his favorite things. A big ass bowl of spicy noodles! Definitely not vegan, and burns like the fires of hell. To wash it down, a caipirinha. It’s booze, lime and a dash of sugar! What’s not to like? 🍜

#ICYMI - #Bourdain, who killed himself in #France earlier this year while shooting an episode for the show’s 11th season, won an Emmy for writing and a second for Outstanding Informational Series or Special. While taking photos with their trophies, the cast of “Parts Unknown” left an empty chair for Bourdain, on which they placed his award. (📸: AP)

Many an article has been written about Anthony Bourdain's fave NYC restaurant. For a man who had been all over the world... who wouldn't wonder what his fave place is in his "local" city?? Well, it's (was) here... #Takashi. Your average home of #testicargot (bull testicles served escargot-style) appetizers, cow cheek as a first course, and a healthy mix of the chef's selection for main course: First Stomach, second stomach, heart, liver, and sweetbreads (aka lymph nodes). Right up my alley!!!! Been waiting 4+ years to go here!
I miss #Bourdain at least once a week and, I know it’s lame, but I really, really miss his presence and contribution to the food adventure of our world. Especially in NYC. Thanks, Randy, for making this bday dream come true 😘 @ottaviabourdain #anthonybourdain @anthonybourdain @asiaargento

Three months later and it still doesn't feel real. Until I realize this man's Wikipedia page quickly changed from present tense to past tense. @anthonybourdain WAS one of my favorite human beings. He WAS my one and only celebrity crush. He WAS an artist; an explorer; an innovator; an all around badass. He WAS one person who taught be to be more fearless; more conscious; more grateful; more [medium] raw. He WAS and forever will be an inspiration to so many beautiful souls.

"Maybe that's enlightenment enough — to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go."

Researchers found that more than half of the individuals who died by suicide from 1999-2016 did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death. But it is about so much more than mental health. Labels don't matter. Life matters. Everyone matters. Everybody people. And everybody hurts. Sometimes. But nobody is alone. Ever.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the USA. Home of the brave. It takes a lot of courage to take your own life — only a coward would take the lives of others as well — but it takes even more courage to continue living. Suicide does not discriminate. It is unpredictable but it is also preventable. Suicide does not offer any solutions. It only leaves more unanswered questions. And if you have any questions, there is always someone willing to listen even if there may not always be an answer. Every single day is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. @800273talk

"As you move through this life and this world, you change things slightly — you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt... The journey changes you. It should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”
Rest in Paradise, Anthony Michael Bourdain (1957-2018)

And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt... The journey changes you. It should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” Rest in Paradise, Anthony Michael Bourdain (1957-2018) ▪▪▪ 1.800.273.TALK

Ready for another long hike with this beauty @_.anarchist.aesthetics._ #colorado #mountains #hiking #adventuretime
Its 41 degrees in these desert canyons. Before the sun even rose, we'd climbed miles of switchbacks to summit this view. Not yet 1 mile in, I (with a nasty infection and likely high fever) am already gasping for breath. I can't feel my throat, my knees are buckling, and my chest feels like its caving in. I stop, totally defeated, ready to give up, and push myself forward as I look back the direction I came. -

This was my own little #Bourdain tribute. An opportunity to leave behind all reservations and go so far out of my comfort zone that my head spinned. I don't regret it. #zion #nature #view #usa #utah #travel
