“We are stronger, smarter, and braver than we realize, and when we're deep in the weeds, we can override our trash instincts and help advance society further. And even in those moments when it appears that we've made less than honorable decisions...time and time again served as a reminder that everything will be okay." #everythingstrashbutitsokay #phoeberobinson #currentlyreading

Aku lupa...

Happy Monday everyone! I’m having all sorts of adventures in photography with winter lighting 😅 If anyone has any tips/tricks for shooting in winter a girl would love to know ✨ But today is the most joyous of bookish days because I got a bunch of book mail 🙌🏻 (Plus I’m about 60 pages from finishing EoS 😍)

QOTD: What are some of your most anticipated releases of 2019?
•
•
AOTD: So I was thinking today about 2019 books I’m excited for...and I realized that I’m not as informed as I normally am! I’m excited for Dark Age (even though I STILL haven’t finished Iron Gold) and I’m dying for On the Come Up. But the only other release that really jumps to mind is We Hunt the Flame which sounds amazing and fantastic and the author is actually hosting a giveaway ✨ So, let me know what you’ve got your eyes on because your girl is clueless this year 😂

What’s a book that others love that you didn’t enjoy? Mine has to be either the Six of Crows duology, The Cruel Prince or Outlander.
I hope to try to read all these again, though, to give them another shot!

Wow what a book!!! I started reading the book after watching the first season on Netflix. And this was such a masala book with lots of swear words...gang wars....blood!!! 📚
📚

This mammoth book of more than 900 pages is a page turner crime fiction. The main characters are Sartaj Singh, the only only Sikh inspector in the whole of Mumbai and Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India. 📚
📚

I'm eagerly looking forward to the season 2 of Sacred Games on Netflix, especially after reading the book. 📚
📚

From the back of the book
An enormously satisfying, exciting and enriching book, Vikram Chandra's novel draws the reader deep into the lives of detective Sartaj Singh and Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India. 📚
📚

Sartaj, the only Sikh inspector in the whole of Mumbai, is used to being identified by his turban, beard and the sharp cut of his trousers. But 'the silky Sikh' is now past forty, his marriage is over and his career prospects are on the slide. When Sartaj gets an anonymous tip off as to the secret hideout of the legendary boss of the G-company, he's determined that he'll be the one to collect the prize. 📚
📚

This is a sprawling, epic novel of friendships and betrayals, of terrible violence, of an astonishing modern city and its underworld. Drawing on the best of Victorian fiction, mystery novels, Bollywood movies and Vikram Chandra's years of first hand research on the streets of Mumbai, this novel reads like a potboiling page-turner but resonates with the intelligence and emotional depth of the best of literature 📚
📚

🍂Rosa: I’m missing warm weather. The lack of sun and biting cold are only exacerbating the frustration I feel at a lot of things lately. Most are political (check out our IG stories today if you want to know exactly what I’m talking about), but others are personal. I feel no motivation to read lately, but I have no fear that motivation will come soon. Patience isn’t my strong suit, I guess. .

*FRIDA KAHLO*
(Ressam)
6 Temmuz 1907 - 13 Temmuz 1954

Can’t wait to read the inspiring @daniellerobay’s #BookRec: Beauty Sick
-
This book changed my life.
-
Dr. Engeln is a psychology professor and body image researcher at Northwestern University. She is the author of *Beauty Sick: How the Cultural Obsession with Appearance Hurts Girls and Women*
- “As a psychology researcher, when I talk to young girls, I often ask that question so many adults ask: What do you want to be when you grow up? I love the variety of answers. A teacher. A scientist. An astronaut. A veterinarian. A painter. The president. But no matter what type of life young girls dream of, I know there’s a good chance there are two things they really want to be: thin and pretty.”
-
"Wanting to be beautiful is not the problem. The problem is when it's all our young girls and women want to be."
-
Girls grow up hearing both implicit and explicit messages suggesting that the most important attribute they can strive for is beauty. The chronic focus on beauty directs cognitive, financial, and emotional resources away from other goals. -
On average, a woman owns 40 cosmetic products and spends about 55 minutes getting ready each day. In other words, women sacrifice time and resources that could probably be spent on achieving goals in education, a career, family or hobbies.

What would it be like to feel free to spend less time in front of the mirror and more time changing the world?

Happy Monday! I hope you’re all having a great start to Thanksgiving week 🙌🏻 🦃 I’m starting the week with a recharge after a busy weekend of Friendsgiving. What are your plans for the week? If you celebrate, how do you celebrate thanksgiving?

Big goal for the day, finish this lovely book before it’s due back at the library.
Definitely not the legal thrillers that made me a huge John Grisham fan, but I am in love with this one.
The Reckoning starts with a legal case and ends in a historical drama to show the events leading up to the initial crime. Such a tough story to read but I can not wait to finish.

I’m out of my reading slump! 🤓 🎉 •••

Work has been “cancelled” these past few days because of the unhealthy air. I had every intention of working from home today, buuuuuut the email server is down. I think this is the universe’s ways of telling me to relax and read. I’ve had this book for a couple of years, and I am regretting not getting to it sooner. I’m surprised it never got more book buzz. ••••

“We clung to books and to our friends; they reminded us that we had another part to us.” ― Mary Ann Shaffer, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Olla friends! It’s Monday! What are you reading? I finished this lovely book by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows today. While London is recuperating from the World War. Writer Juliet Ashton is searching for her next book subject. Until one day, she receives a letter from a stranger named Dawsey Adams who came across her postal address on a book by Charles Lamb. He introduces her to his book club called The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society where strangers have been brought together by books during the WWII. The stories of each bookclub member begins to unfold until the day, she decides to meet all of them in person. .
.
.
I looooove this book especially the characters of the literary society. As a lover of reading, I can relate a lot on how reading books helped the Guernsey people during the WW. It also shows how books can bring people together despite the crazy world we live in. I definitely recommend it to all bookish souls out there. As for the movie, the book’s a lot better for me because Juliet’s relationship with the people of Guernsey is entirely different from the book. In the movie, she had to pursue the society members before becoming friends and Mark Reynolds got down on his knee to propose! Lol. Those are just some of the few differences I noticed but there’s a lot more when you watch it. ✨🤣

I haven't read this book in... at least 15 years 😱 and after listening to the audiobook this morning (which was only 3 hours!), Charlotte's Web still holds it's place as one of my favorite books of all time. I want to live on Zuckerman's farm and hang out with the animals and Fern and the Zuckermans too! •

It's been so fun rereading old favorites! Have you ever read an old childhood fav that wasn't as good as you remembered?

We’re reading our book club read for the month, but not without begrudgingly putting aside our other currents reads (temporarily). We’re both Gaiman fans, but I’m seeing a shift from his usual writing as it’s a co-authored story. I’m glad to be reading it regardless, and look forward to the conversation later this month. Since baby girl arrived last year, I haven’t been to book club since (except our own) and am so looking forward to it. What was the last book club book you read? #theardentbiblioreads

I picked this beautiful book up at @queenbooksto a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t had a chance to do much reading as of late but hopefully I’ll get to it soon! Have you read this or anything else by Eileen Myles? I’d love to know your thoughts! 😊📖🍂🍁🍃

✨INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY✨
.
2018 has been the year of leaning hard into reading works of literature almost exclusively by “other voices” - women, minorities, basically anybody who can’t be categorized as a cis white male. I’ve discovered many exciting new (to me) authors, but perhaps the one I’m most fond of is Lucia Berlin. Her collection from a few years back, A Manual for Cleaning Women, quickly became a favorite - Berlin’s ability to insert dry humor into even the emotionally wrought of her stories is probably what endeared me to her the most. •
.
So I’ve decided to give away copies of her two most recently released works - Evening in Paradise and Welcome Home, both released recently from @fsgbooks. Open internationally, giveaway will close on Sunday, Nov 25th at 8pm EST. The winner will be revealed shortly thereafter. •
.
RULES ✨
1. Must be following me (don’t follow just to unfollow, that’s rude). 2. Like this post AND tag two other accounts.
3. For an extra entry - repost the giveaway in your stories and remember to tag me. •
This giveaway is in no way affiliated with Instagram, the author or the publisher of this book. You must be 18 or older to enter, or have your parents permission.

#HappyMonday bookstagram📚. I’m currently sitting in my bed coming off of food poisoning from this weekend #funstuff 🤢. But on the up side, there’s a bar called The Library in LES and it was fantastic and had books, so if that’s your vibe- totally recommend. Now I will continue to chug electrolytes and catch up on all the reading I didn’t even get to this weekend. Here’s to a new (short) week🙌🏻

The book series I have been reading since the start of fall is coming to an end. And something in my heart cracks. You know that feeling where you are so attached to the characters and the cities, war and a constant chase game of peace, these images, these characters and their battles become your day and night. Always murmuring in the background in your days, in your dreams... ✨
•
•
And then a journey reaches its destination, the final chapters of the book and the most dreaded farewell to the characters approaches. ❄️
•
•
I don’t have words to express how I feel, saying goodbye to yet another amazing journey and beautiful transition of some lovely characters... ☕️
•
•
So many goodbyes in life...✨

The book series I have been reading since the start of fall is coming to an end. And something in my heart cracks. You know that feeling where you are so attached to the characters and the cities, war and a constant chase game of peace, these images, these characters and their battles become your day and night. Always murmuring in the background in your days, in your dreams... ✨ • • And then a journey reaches its destination, the final chapters of the book and the most dreaded farewell to the characters approaches. ❄️ • • I don’t have words to express how I feel, saying goodbye to yet another amazing journey and beautiful transition of some lovely characters... ☕️ • • So many goodbyes in life...✨ • • • #bookstagram  #bookscoffeemagicfall  #readersofinsta  #booksandbeans  #booksandtea  #epicreads  #bookbloggers  #thebookoflife  #booknerds  #bookshelfdecor  #readerforlife  #beautifulbooks  #booksofinsta  #bookphotos  #booklover  #bookfeaturepage  #ofquietmoments  #bookoftheday  #flatlayforever  #ilovebooks  #bookstore  #cosyupyourworld  #magicmoments  #booksandcandles  #autumnaesthetic  #autumnlover  #aymenarifmalik  #happymomentsinlife
Mini review of WHAT IF IT’S US 📦 .
Arthur is in New York City for the summer as an intern at his mother’s law firm. During a chance encounter at the post office, he meets Ben who is there to mail his breakup box to his ex. Once they’re able to reunite after their meet-cute, they’re together for the summer. Is that the end of it? The universe has its own plans.
.
Of course, this literary dream team came up with an adorable romance with characters who are messy and realistic and normal teens. This was super cute, and at times laugh-out-loud funny. There wasn’t much of a plot, but the cuteness of the love story almost made up for it. The thing keeping it from 5 stars for me is that neither of the authors could really be fully expressive in their own style since they had to find a way to blend their work.

Treated myself to breakfast and some reading this Monday morning so I’m off to a good start. Happy Monday! Thankfully it’s a short work week but it’ll be a busy week with Thanksgiving preparations underway, family coming to town. Busy days mean less reading on the horizon! Will any bookworms be celebrating Thanksgiving?

Obviously one of the best things about bookstagram is the book recommendations but it’s even nicer when you realise that book you keep seeing everywhere has been around since 2005, and there’s a whole series to catch up on...I’ve actually been aware of Louise Penny for a while, and keep meaning to hop on board the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache train, but now thanks to seeing it all over my feed I think I might finally do it 🕵🏻‍♂️🇨🇦🌲

Have you ever received something old, it can be something simple yet also something you treasure the most?
A little story time— while helping my mom clean up the cabinets, I saw this really gorgeous glass/gold platter ☝🏼 and immediately asked her if I could have it (or at least borrow) 😅 Turns out it was given to her by her mother too, and who knows what more history this platter has 🙈 •
Also, I guess it’s time to break the slump with the help of the queen herself 👑 A Holiday for Murder sounds like a fitting read these days right? Well then, wish me luck! ☺️

“What happens to him to render his aggressively harmless? Something very curious, which we would not have suspected, but which is plain to see. The aggression is introjected, internalized, actually sent back where it came from; in other words, it is directed against the individual’s own ego … In this way civilization overcomes the dangerous aggressivity of the individual, by weakening him, disarming him and setting up an internal authority to watch over him, like a garrison in a conquered town”.
- From Civilization and its Discontents (1930) by Sigmund Freud
.
What impresses me so much about Freud and the other psychoanalysts is the incredible scope of their investigation. Especially the later works of Freud dwelled deep into societal influence on the individual psyche, describing neurosis as the result of a failed dialectic between the needs of the singular against the will of the plural.
.
There are so noticeable similarities in the investigation done by Rosseau and Freud, that it must be addressed. First of all the resemblance between Freud's ‘Super-ego’ and ‘Rosseaus ‘General will’, both viewed as constitutive of society and an expression of perceived cultural expectations, in dreams often depicted as the father figure.
.
Freud's super-ego is in the composer of all shame - nowhere is this clearer than in the image of sexual indecency. Although our ego might ‘want it’ our super-ego (ie. our perception of social norms), tells us we should not have it. If we break societal exceptions we experience humiliation, inflicted by the omnipresent super-ego. But this does not mean the super-ego is inherently faulty, the dialectic between the super-ego and ego is what brings us closer to perfection, over-identifying with either will result in neuroticism.
.
All-though Freud can be overly reductionistic, with his emphasis on libido (obviously you cannot take a major motivational system and correctly explain everything on the basis of a singular cause), his endeavor to study the interplay between the social contract and psychosis is at least admirable. Not many could venture into such grounds and egress on the other side with a coherent argument.

🍁Happy Monday everyone, hope you all had a lovely weekend 💗 .

Time for my regular weekly #ReadingUpdate! .

This week I am still reading How to Live Like Your Cat by Stephane Garnier. 🤗😸 .

Additionally I started listening to The Year of Living Danishly to continue with my nonfiction reads in this month of #NonfictionNovember. 💕 In this book, the writer is a journalist who moved to Denmark to follow her husband’s work and learned how the Danish became the happiest people in the world. 😱
So far it’s really insightful and I really like listening it in Audible during my bike ride to work. 💖 .

Currently reading Three Wishes by, you guessed it, LIANE MORIARTY. My favorite author as of late. This is the third to the last book she wrote that I have yet to finish reading and so far, I’m really loving it. What’s new, really? As you guys may noticed from all my stories, I’m not doing good emotionally and it’s in these moments that I’m so thankful for books. They can transport you to worlds/stories and help you temporarily escape reality. Which I really need right now. Just hoping you’re all doing much better than I am. I’m sorry for all the negativity around here but that’s just what it is and I’m not afraid to show the real me. Thank you for everyone who messaged me and empathized. I love you.

Mornings sunshines ☀️ It is after so many days that I have been able to get up early morning and actually welcome the winter sun. And with this, our theme also takes a turn. You spotted!!! YELLOW ✨
•
•
I believe winters don’t have to be about merely blacks and greys (though i simply love and live black). Winters should equally be about colours and brightness because this time is exactly when we need these sparkling happy hues. 🌸
•
•
So the current theme is a tribute to winters, colours and mornings sun 😊

At once bewitching and vividly haunting!
•
Set in colonial New England, this wasnt like anything I have read lately! With elements of horror, magical realism and folk lore told in poetic prose.

I was immediately sucked into this mysterious story of a woman lost in the woods. As her journey unfolds we meet several strange and horrifying characters as well as finding out about her own strange story and how she came to be lost in these dark woods.
I couldn't put this down! I needed to find out what was lurking next and ultimately what was the end game.
I really enjoyed Hunt's writing and immediately started looking into his other books.
•
Also this cover art is stunning! And how it carries through within was a very nice touch 👌

I finally finished The Girl Who Drank the Moon! I completed my goal for this weekend 🙌 And guys, this book blew me away! It was FANTASTIC! Now I want to read more middle grade!
•
It's magical, it's lyrical, it's captivating and heartwarming. I was even tearing up a little at the end 😢 Something I never expected from a middle grade story!
•
If you are a fan of The Bear and the Nightingale (like I was), I think you'll like this one as well. •

It’s so rare that we have a cozy Sunday at home. 🏡✨ I don’t even know if #socksunday is a thing anymore, but I just had to do it!

I’m hoping to power through a few more 2018 reads before the end of the year. Please do me a favor and tell me which book(s) in this stack I DON’T need to make a priority. If you see one(s) you love, feel free to let me know that too, but I really need to know which books to return unread so my TBR pile will be a little more manageable. 📚😉 (Swipe to see a book stack with more readable titles.)

I'm actually really intrigued by this book and feel that it will be a real fast paced read!
It's about a school shooting and three years later one of the witnesses wants to tell the real story, the truth, about how her bestfriend died in the shooting... _____________________________________________________

Thinking of starting RILEY SAGERS book, THE LAST TIME I LIED today. Have you read it? •

Premise:
Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she--or anyone--saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips.

Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings--massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends.

Yet it's immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. Already haunted by memories from fifteen years ago, Emma discovers a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian left behind about the camp's twisted origins. As she digs deeper, Emma finds herself sorting through lies from the past while facing threats from both man and nature in the present.

And the closer she gets to the truth about Camp Nightingale, the more she realizes it may come at a deadly price. •

Also getting ready to interview TESSA LUNNEY (@tessawynn)this evening with my wonderful co-host @bookish.kiki 📖🍷 •

For some reason I get a really bad headache everyday Sunday & no, it’s not a hangover 🙄. It usually takes half the day for the pain to go away, but coffee, a good book, and 432hz music helps. ✨

“This is the season she will make beautiful things. Not perfect things but honest things that speak to who she is and who she is called to be.” {Morgan Harper Nichols}

I love taking photos like this but I fell out of the habit when I saw so many beautiful flat lays and felt like mine didn’t measure up. But if Instagram has taught me anything, it’s that there’s space for everyone to share their creativity and a whole bunch of lovely people who will support you on the way. The internet is far from perfect, but I am so grateful for this online community we’ve made for ourselves! #whpcommunity #objectproject_table

#weshouldallbefeminists #chimamandangoziadichie

A personal and powerful essay from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the bestselling author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun, based on her 2013 TEDx Talk of the same name.
📚
📚

If you want to pick one book to explain feminism to someone, it would be Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's We Should All Be Feminists. 📚
📚 "We teach girls shame. 'Close your legs. Cover yourself.' We make them feel as though being born female they’re already guilty of something. And so, girls grow up to be women who cannot say they have desire. They grow up to be women who silence themselves. They grow up to be women who cannot say what they truly think. And they grow up — and this is the worst thing we do to girls — they grow up to be women who have turned pretense into an art form."
📚
📚

I'm not going to write anything more about this book....it's a small but powerful book and I would recommend EVERYONE to read it. 📚
