Played Everdell Deluxe edition by @starlinggames
Firstly, what a beautiful game! The woodland art style is amazing and the board just drips theme. The Deluxe edition comes with metal coins and 3D resources, including squishy berries. Whilst the 3D tall tree is a little gimicy, I love it. The theme is brilliant, it can span across generations, a feature I really admire in a game.
Everdell has also become one of my favourite games of 2018!
In Everdell you lead your critters to build the best city that you can. Building structures and recruiting critters into your city you strive to have the best city at the end of the game and score the most victory points.
I am a huge fan of worker placement engine builders, I really enjoy balancing collecting resources with investing in your engine to try and maximise your point scoring and create huge combos.
What was great about Everdell is that it was very tight, the game spans over 4 seasons, so it is very pacy. You never feel it dragging like other engine builders when a player actively lengthens the game to try and squeeze out every point.
To be honest I was surprised at how much I like this game, highly recommended from me.

Jaipur is the *only* competitive game in our collection that I am currently beating M at overall! He has a very logical, mathematical brain and can usually work out optimal strategies very quickly. I have a more creative brain - I like to experiment with lots of different strategies. I also get immersed in the theme more than tactics! Well - that's my excuse for losing so much 😂
QUESTION OF THE DAY: Which game do you almost always win at (and/or which do you always lose at)?
- Indian merchants theme
- 2 players
- 30 mins
- Low-medium complexity
- Competitive tactical game
- Wealth accumulation
- Hand management mechanic

Eeehyeahh, EVERDELL is “growing” on me. I wasn’t totally impressed at first, mainly due to the hard limit on the hand size, but each subsequent play has me appreciating that design decision, as it’s just a part of the game that I had to get acclimated with. Yes, it’s possible to get stuck with cards that you can’t build or chain (ala 7 Wonders), but managing the luck of the draw, tightness, and exposure to as many cards as possible is key to success.
Everdell also has that thing that I love where players are trying to squeeze out every little action they can from what they have. You can find it in games like Terra Mystica/Gaia Project, 51st State, and Deus, some of which are my faves. Will Everdell fall into the fave category along with the others? Time will tell, but so far, it’s looking promising.
Oh, and past the gameplay, we can’t get over how beautiful the game is. 😭

MOST UNIQUE THEMES IN GAMES: #2
There are tons and TONS of fantasy games out there. But Alchemists isn’t about orcs, elves, and magic. It’s about academia. Academia in a fantasy setting, where players are researching the recipes to specific potions. I love the race to be the first to deduce the proper recipe and the feeling of victory as you debunk someone else’s discovery. Plus, as is true in real-life, you get to take advantage of your lab assistants (i.e. grad students) by having them try your potion!
Danielle: FOOD CHAIN MAGNATE
I may be biased because Food Chain Magnate is one of my favorite games in general, but the theme feels like a unique take on an economic game to me. It does a great job of implementing multiple aspects of the business of owning a fast food chain, from creating your corporate structure to figuring out what you want to sell and advertise. If only the look were prettier, it would truly be the perfect thematic package.
CENTURY : EASTERN WONDERS || Still quite popular with my group. You can sometimes knock back two games in an hour... I had mentioned that I think this takes longer to set up than Spice Road, but if you don't have to teach, the game does flow quite quickly. I think both Century games are very elegantly designed on their own. I'm leaning toward liking Eastern Wonders more due to it having less of a luck factor than Spice Road's card deck. But I'd gladly play either of them.
To recap where we were last time, Josh and I had poorly lied our way into an enemy castle, gotten past the guards, but sounded the alarm. We made it to the courtyard but they ignored us there. So we went to the first door and right before we walked in, it swung open and standing there were some cultists we'd run into before. A giant dragonborn drenched Josh in acid. Some splashed on me. And then the other guy threw out some darkness and ran away. .
So Josh and I blindly made our way into this tower. We had walked into a Sanctuary dedicated to Tiamat the dragon Queen. As quickly as we could, we barricaded the door but it was clear and mob was coming. So we ran to the backroom. Again, we barricaded the door, but this time Josh started a fire.
On the second floor there was a library with a bunch of cultists, non-too-happy to see us. Thankfully the stairs to the third floor were right there, so we just ran upstairs again. Once on the third floor, we threw down some chairs and a mattress that we had lit on fire, causing a real big commotion. .
With this distraction, we were able to barricade ourselves behind two more doors and hide in a bedroom. I started to climb out our only escape, a chimney, while Josh explored the room. All he found was more acid. Enough to knock him out and almost take me out too. Going into this, I wasn't sure if we'd survive, but I didn't think it's be a random bucket of acid is what'd do us in. .
Everyone else did do stuff this week. It just wasn't nearly as exciting. Hopefully we survive next week!!
Is it time for another Dead of Winter post? 😜 This is my first time experiencing Warring Colonies, though other than changing the places we’d go to scavenge, there wasn’t a lot of notable differences between the base...as we didn’t do any colony combat until the end (at which point we sunk morale as the principal left the grocery store and got bitten, lol). I was hoping to try the Long Night characters as I’d never played with them, but the ones I’d been able to draw haven’t been better than the Base ones I got.
It feels like I need more Warring Colony plays to actually appreciate the game, but the time it takes to set up, tear down, and actual play...it’s kind of difficult to pitch. It’s a shame, but oh well.

Back in 2013 when I went from just dabbling in this hobby to slowly falling down this never ending rabbit hole, I vividly remember searching for a cool game to play. After watching tons and tons of Dice Tower videos I decided upon Belfort from Tasty Minstrel Games. I had just backed my first Kickstarter from them so that’s probably why I took a chance on their game. I wasn’t disappointed either. And thus began my Love affair with all things TMG. So......... I just heard this morning on their podcast that it’s coming to Kickstarter for a upgraded reprint next month and I couldn’t be more excited!!!!!! @tastyminstrel #playtmg#tastyminstrelgames#boardgames#tabletopgames#belfort#boardgamephotography#gullsbottom#deluxified#kickstartergames#boardgamesofinstagram
