Someone asked me yesterday “If you could go back and give advice to your younger self, just getting started as a professional artist- what would you tell yourself to change?” I thought about it for a second and indicated- honestly, I wouldn’t change anything. Even the things that I am still working out. Because they all make me who I am. No one can take that from me. Each situation that I have overcome and learned from is like a brick- they build upon one another to create a strong house built on a strong foundation : The homelessness, living in the shelter with my boys, the working 4 and 5 Jobs in an attempt to keep my head above the water, the messed up record deals, the failed tours with outstanding debts, the people who took advantage of my trust, the enemies I’ve made, the friends I’ve lost, the failed marriage, the failed relationships...I wouldn’t change a thing, because they all brought me here. It is because of my experiences that I sing with the passion that I do, and I write the songs that tell my story, and heal my ails, and touch other people. It hasn’t all been pretty, but it’s been worth it. We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty. The finished product was (and still is) tempered and refined by fire (trials and tribulations) my character is shaped by my struggles. I am a better, more compassionate and wiser person because of what I have overcome. “Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering.”-Theodore Roosevelt #struggle#overcoming#inspiration#quotes#teddyrooselvelt#authenticliving#naked#positivevibes#lifelessons#positivethinking#hardtimes#naked#mayaangelou#motivation#butterfly#bluesdiva#selflove#bluesmusic#jazzfestival#asconajazz
