Inventor and engineer Lewis Latimer was born in Massachusetts, USA on September 4, 1848. He collaborated with science greats Hiram Maxim and Thomas Edison.
One of Latimer’s greatest inventions was the carbon filament, a vital component of the light bulb. His inventions didn’t stop there, working with Alexander Graham Bell, Latimer helped draft the patent for Bell’s design of the telephone. This genius also designed an improved railroad car bathroom and an early air conditioning unit. So the next time you’re escaping this summer sun inside your cool house or office, don’t forget to thank Lewis Latimer!
Latimer’s creativity extended far beyond his inventions. He also played the flute and violin, and wrote a book of poetry and a play that was produced. Evem his book about incandescent lighting shows his poetic side: “Like the light of the sun, it beautifies all things on which it shines, and is no less welcome in the palace than in the humbleat home." In 1908 he helped found what is now the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Queens, where his portrait hangs in the sanctuary. Corresponding with black intellectuals, Latimer insisted on full citizenship and integration of African Americans into society. He bought a large house in the mostly white borough of Queens, which is today a museum in his honor.
Repost from @melii - "I cut my hair off of Impulse but more so cuz I hid a lot behind it.. I would fluff my hair to hide my neck , I’ll leave my long bangs on top of my nose to hide that too . Getting teased in school about my features molded a lot of things in me , how I dressed Down to how I would strategically fix my hair or do my make up .if ya notice I do a weird thing when I talk in interviews sometimes it’s me snapping in and out from even trying to hide my gap . When u learn to love yourself no one can use anything against you to make you feel bad about urself. So I started with my hair the one thing I thought I needed to feel beautiful . Fear is a persons biggest enemy, once you face your fears big or small, you really do feel unstoppable."
let's talk about ownership: The other day, it came to my realization that we as a people need to have more ownership. Ownership of our cars or homes, our lives and our businesses. We DO NOT OWN OUR JOB, IT CAN BE TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU IN AN UNEXPECTED INSTANT. When you have worked hard for your desires & you finally bought it out-right... where it's clearly in your name.. nobody can take that from you.. Renting something can only get you so far because life can throw changes at you, that you wasn't ready for... .& now all of your renting things have been taken away from you..(sorry to be the bear of bad news) But let's work smarter.. let's think long-term ..it's nothing wrong with renting.. But Im saying OWN something that you can have lucrative asset for it later... most of all..it makes you just feel good..feeling good is like feeling God.... Disclaimer : not a financial guru... Just my suggestion lol
