For my first ever #tbt I am also going to tell @eddiebauer & @outdoorproject #WhyIHike because I just got home from a month long road trip where I saw 9 state/national parks/monuments and I am aching to go to more. I grew up in Northern California a stones throw from more state and national parks or forests than I even know, but then I moved to Iowa where you have to drive a considerable distance to see anything. I hike because I love waterfalls and bridges and canyons and mountains. The best memories (and photos) don’t often come from somewhere that you can just pull over on the side of the road, they come from a hike because the best places, the best views are those that are not packed with people and cars but trees and wildlife. I love camping under the stars and the trees where you can’t hear a single sound because even the birds and crickets are silent. I hike because I love being outside more than anything that I could do inside. #optoutside#contest
Mount Rushmore, SD.
I wasn't expecting to be blown away by standing in front of this monument. You've seen pictures in history books and that pretty much summed up your expectations of what it would look like. However, whether it was the rain, the stark contrast of the clouds or just solely by being in the presence of physical history - it was incredibly grounding.
I took a serendipitous turn on a dirt road on July 10th and ended up witnessing nature’s power: damage from July 3rd tornado near Cement Ridge in the Black Hills. Trees broken at the base or ripped from the ground. Wow.
In this video we go exploring around the Bearlodge Mountains in northeast Wyoming while looking for a new, remote campsite. We enjoyed the adventures on back roads and found 2 abandoned mines, and miles and miles of dirt roads surrounded by stunning scenery, deer and bewildered free range cows at humans on their land. We almost get stuck and/or have to turn around several times. How many times? Well, for that number you'll have to watch the vid. Enjoy!
