Last week I had the opportunity to go back to my roots. I was able to return to where it all started, the Biomechanics Laboratory at East Carolina University. Even better, I was able to reconnect with my mentor Dr. Paul DeVita, Ph.D. As well as being internationally known and respected in the field of Kinesiology & Biomechanics, a author of dozens of influential research publications, past-president of the American Society of Biomechanics and founder of National Biomechanics Day, Dr. D was instrumental in shaping me into who I have become today. He saw something in me early in my academic career that I didn’t even know I had. He gave me the confidence to pursue higher learning and inspired me to accomplish what I have to this point in my career. There is no substitute in life for an amazing mentor!

Commentators often talk about "shoulder turn" when discussing players swings. This is a confusing term as the "shoulder turn" they refer to is actually thoracic rotation. The shoulder, or the glenohumeral joint, is rotating in the golf swing, however, into the backswing, they are doing opposite motions. The lead shoulder is performing horizontal adduction, flexion, and internal rotation. The trail shoulder is performing abduction, a little bit of extension, and external rotation. While the commentators may continue to call it shoulder turn, let it be known that they are indeed talking about thoracic rotation from an anatomical perspective. Thoracic rotation, or lack thereof, is one of the most common findings amongst amateur golfers. When thoracic rotation is lacking they will over recruit other areas of the body by changing the spine angle or early extend out of dynamic posture. You can see the increased rotation of the ribcage has allowed for more travel of the shoulders. This has been trained using @swingbalancemedical ‘s multistik underneath the shoulder blades while rotating at an angle to the ground. These “T turns” focus on improving thoracic rotation and address set up posture which is key to allowing for longevity of play and consistent ball striking.

Regrann from @fp.ajmtz - So we fell a little short with the friend tags, but since well over 50 people are interested in how to train smarter to get harder here's the technique 💪
.
Movements against horizontal force vectors have proven to be very effective in reducing pain and likelihood of injuries all while enhancing performance in virtually every person I have trained using @functionalpatterns .
.
This is a very small piece of the variables that make up human movement.

Repost @bros_md Bar Path in the Bench Press
—
For any beginners, first check out our previous posts regarding the bench press!
—
@gregnuckols has an in depth article regarding this and there’s also Thomas McLaughlin’s book “Bench Press More Now: Breakthroughs in Biomechanics and Training Methods” which is all about this so we’re gonna keep this post short
—
The main reason why pressing the bar back and up immediately off of your chest is the most efficient is because it decreases the total flexion demands at the shoulder
—
When the bar is unracked, it is the most stable directly above the shoulders. Try holding the bar above your stomach, it is going to be very unstable and it will demand a lot from your shoulders. By pressing the bar back towards your shoulders immediately, we decrease this total flexion demand and allow us to press more efficiently (and more weight) through the sticking point
—
This is a technical change and like all technical changes it’s going to take some practice to get this new motor pattern down
—
Give it a try and increase your bench press!

@Regrann from @fpvancouver - Chances are that if you still require a great deal of load in order to feel tension in your structure you're doing the latter of the two. Our ability to create force doesn't come from excessive external load, but rather internal tension. The more partitioned this tension is the more damage gravity will ultimately do to you. Creating a globalized tensile rhythmicity in your structure is fundamental to establishing a biomechanically sound body. There's a reason why you don't see many fitness professionals make it into their 50's and 60's without some sort of surgery or chronic pain. The reason for this is quite simply their practice didn't go deep enough in accounting for the variables stated above. If they claim that they do, then please point me in the direction of their results. Something FP is no stranger too.
.
@functionalpatterns we address all these variables and more right down to the most finite detail. If you're interested in more information or are looking for a practitioner near you check out the Functional Patterns Practitioner map at www.practitioners.functionalpatterns.com

@Regrann from @themyoengineer - Personally I hate reading scientific studies in the realm of exercise. It's hard to correlate almost anything in them because context is rarely ever taken into account with these studies. It seems as though many in our community who insist they are evidence based like eliminating variables in reality to feel as though they are playing the science game. They do this to eliminate personal doubts about their ability to comprehend what's really going on around them. .
.
Every day, I find myself testing mechanisms more than I do reading articles. Don't get me wrong, there is some unbelievably legit science out there these days, I just think that much of what people are doing in my industry is not up to par with the others. I feel exercise specialists of all levels have a very low self expectation. Instead of investigating things they don't understand, they write them off because they are too unmotivated to dig deeper.
.
.
With science, you can do the impossible, yet you see so many limitations ingrained in people's minds because they spend more time studying limitations than they do possibilities. I spend my time on possibilities and it yields results. Results many people in my field turn a blind eye to. Why? Because it apparently prods at their idea that they are essentially hopeless and have to make due with the dysfunctions they adopted.
.
.
Don't be a victim guys. There are solutions to all problems, you just have to be willing to work to find them. You have to be aware enough to know that groups of people get things wrong all the time. That all ideas become obsolete at one point or the other.
.
.
I have been accused of shooting people down. I don't. I give them options. It triggers CD for sure, but I am helping. Or atleast I'm trying. Or atleast I'm hoping that I'm actually trying to do that. So are all the other people at FP. Keep it going tribe.

@Regrann from @fpvancouver - Ever wonder what is putting your joints into their positioning? Just because you can establish what appears to be neutral joint positioning doesn’t mean you’re creating a properly associated tension to that position. For example, if my knees are fixated in a hyperextension a simple cue would be for me to bend my knees. Simple enough right? Unfortunately not. We have to think about what is the driving factor that is actually creating a knee flexion in the first place. The body typically chooses the path of least resistance which usually leads to an inefficient tension being created. This is an extremely important variable that needs to be accounted for in movement. @functionalpatterns we address these variables on the most microscopic level to pinpoint where the body is establishing tension from and make sure we are creating points of most EFFICIENCY which often means deviating from the path of least resistance.

Seeing how the body maintains conectivity while fatigued during power punching. Not too bad. Things are starting to come together in dynamic settings. Absolutely destroyed myself before this with some other movements I will post later.

I don't often bring myself to exhaustion, but sometimes you need to push the limits to test what you're made of (without sacrificing functionality, of course). I know that I'm willing to put the work in to earn what I want out of my body. Are you?

Today marks the one year anniversary of my "Mindset Monday" posts. It began with consciousness and I find it appropriate to start this next year off the same way.

Try to think of your very next thought. Got it? Nope. It is impossible to foresee your very next thought because consciousness is something that flows through you. You are experiencing consciousness. The universe presents itself to you and your conscious mind recognizes it and reacts to it, based on prerecorded emotional significance (your contextual personal history). There are a multitude of reasons for assigning significance to ANYTHING and those reasons are not necessarily your own. This human condition is pervasive and persuasive.
What could be more persuasive than nagging knee or lower back pain? Or looking in the mirror and seeing all those bits you want to hide? Your body is so intimately yours, but it is not "who you are". We draw so much identity from the story of our bodies that our mind gets clouded with it's narrative. It is not your passions, dreams, ideas, sense of humor. Those things that are a unique expression of the spirit within. Your body is a vessel for this spirit.

You are the experiencing subject within the experienced object #Samadhi. You are not your body. You are just the conscious mind at the wheel #driveresponsibly.

You are the experiencing subject within the experienced object #Samadhi . You are not your body. You are just the conscious mind at the wheel #driveresponsibly . #MindsetMonday  #posture  #biomechanics  #mindset  #functionalmovement  #awareness  #Learning  #consciousness  #subconscious  #intuition  #meditation  #selfdiscipline  #spirituality  #selfawareness  #selflove  #bodyawareness  #mindfulness  #mindfulliving  #mindbodysoul  #mondaymotivation  #motivation  #motivationalquotes  #healthandwellness  #functionalmovement  #thousandoaks  #westlakevillage  #calabasas  #malibu  #gfunctional

@fp.nick showing some fantastic progress with his client's scoliosis this far. Great job! Inching our way to solving some seriously difficult problems.

Slow gains are better than no gains. This is easily the most difficult scoliosis I have worked with.
.
.
.
Left picture is prior to 1st session relaxed. Middle picture is 8th session relaxed. Right picture is 8th session active. While neither of us are content with the relaxed posture, it took a lot of work to get to that active posture. .
.
.
To be completely transparent and honest with myself and those who follow me, I’m not certain that I currently have ability to correct this structural scoliosis. There is a large difference between a structural scoliosis and a functional scoliosis. It’s not as simple as forcing the joints and spine into place. I’m going to keep working though.

Ever wonder what is putting your joints into their positioning?

Stefanie completed a 6 month mentorship with me in NYC a couple years ago.

She is one of the most creative people I know. Truly.
⠀⠀⠀
She’s been a rockstar in questioning the yoga alignment status quo.

Here’s a boring video of me going up and down the stairs. It’s my way of declaring that I am no longer overly concerned about the alignment cue “don’t let your knee go beyond your heel/ankle” when you bend your knee for certain yoga poses (like warrior 2).
⠀⠀⠀
Note that each time I climb a single step, my knee goes in front of my ankle. 🙀
⠀⠀⠀
Guess what! So does yours. (More important to me is that my knee goes the same direction my toes are pointing). Nope, I’m not gonna lose sleep about your knee going a little forward.
⠀⠀⠀
Also utkatasana anyone? Squats, yes? Hooray functional anatomy! That is all.

SMALL INCREMENTS MEANS BIG GAINS✅

Now for the 90kg mark😏

Working with this chap over the past 4 months. He is now finally moving pain free. Still a load to work on but for the first time in years he is pain free. Elliot came to me with chronic bilateral knee & foot pain and incredibly flat feet. Knee pain now non existent and we’re making good progress with getting those aches back.

NOVITA’ in casa MoveLab Bikefitting!
.
A cosa serve?
.
.
E per l’autunno altre news in arrivo!🔜👍🏻

Integration vs. Isolation:

"While every anatomy lists around 600 separate muscles, it is more accurate to say that there is one muscle poured into six hundred pockets of the fascial webbing. The 'illusion' of separate muscles is created by the anatomist's scalpel, dividing tissues along the planes of fascia. This reductive process should not blind us to the reality of the unifying whole." - Thomas W. Myers / Anatomy Trains (@anatomytrainsofficial)

Hundreds of thousands of people gather at the beachfront to watch some of the most technologically advanced man-made machines being flown by the best of the best pilots in our Air Force.  We all gather to see the incredible power, speed and control shown by the planes.

But we see birds demonstrate much more impressive control every single day! We are in awe when 5 planes fly in perfect formation. But we don't bat an eye when see birds do the same!

How did these birds, without ANY training, come to be able to do what our most skilled pilots with the most advanced training and aircraft can do?
Its because they don't need training! It is encoded into their genome. All mammals learn through play!
Have you seen an aircraft land? Or a space ship? Its not pretty. Yet, we have everyday animals do so with ease. And with 100x the accuracy!

And here we are, in a time where professionals think that they know better than Nature. We learn about the 'correct' or 'functional' ways to move 🤐

To me, teaching people how to move is akin to lecturing birds on flying. An egg hatches and a little birdie comes out. Then we start lecturing, and when the time comes, they take off in flight! Surely it was our lectures that led to their ability to fly 🤐
Our military's finest pilots may need to be taught to fly, but nature and play teach our creatures of flight to fly.

We do not need an instruction manual to move any more than we need one to reproduce! There is not a proper or correct way to move any more than there is one to reproduce!

True knowledge does not come from education or research. It comes from trial and error. From PLAY.  We learn to control our bodies through play, why would we need structure to relearn it after injury? HINT: We don't.
Tomorrow I will post a video of how I help people self-heal and rediscover their full breadth of movement through play.

Internal rotation wrap!
My left shoulder suffers from being in an internal rotation which messes with my lat engagement, so in this video I’m feeding that dysfunction with the #fp band, increasing the rotation and using (hopefully) the correct muscles to get me out of that internal rotation. I also put myself through some throwing mechanics with the left to couple it with some rotation.
I know I didn’t show how to actually put the wrap on, partially because I decided to make the video after I was wearing it for a bit but also, hit me up! And check out functional patterns YouTube channel. #functionalpatterns #biomechanics #bandwrap #internalrotation #bandswillmakethemdance

Using Ground Force correctly can add a lot of power to explosive movements like the golf swing. There is a kinetic chain that runs through the whole body by applying a PUSHING and PULLING force through the feet into the ground. The amount of force we apply into the ground will be equaled by the amount of force that will be delivered back into the body (Newton’s 3rd Law of motion). So, the more pushing and pulling force we can apply into the ground; the more power we can generate in the body.
PUSHING FORCE: FLEXION PATTERN
-Feet apply pushing force into ground(quads/gluteus)
-Pelvis flattens
-Spine rounds forward...Visualize the back of the spine getting as long as possible
EXHALE BREATH...use your breath to get deeper into the movement
PULLING FORCE: EXTENSION PATTERN
-Feet apply a PULLING force into the ground (Hamstring/Gluteus)
-Pelvis tilts forward -Spine arches back...want to extend back getting as TALL as you can...Visualize the front of the spine getting as long as possible
INHALE BREATH
This movement pattern will be voluntary for some who use this kinetic chain daily; but for others who don’t it will take some time and effort to re-learn it.
Using a mirror will help do this correctly and use as an aid for alignment and as a check for the quality of movement
Place your legs in all different positions (wide, narrow, feet pointed out/in, etc.) to put various demands on them. Make sure the hip, knee, and foot are in proper alignment whatever position you choose. You can also do the this pattern lying down with legs standing if you need more support for the core. The ground can also serve as a cue for the brain for proper spinal alignment.
This is 2X speed please go SLOW and explore the movement🙏💪🏻🏌🏿
**Ive been doing this daily for a year and as you can see I still have limited ROM and some jerky movement as well; but I’m all about progress and that I have definitely made. It’s all about showing up every day with whatever you have that day

First time attempt at this one. Pretty satisfied but alot to improve.🙌 Front and backline need to connect more. Try this one its awesome to potentiate the rectus abdominals eccentrically, and thats something we see people do to little in the gyms! 💥

Still seems crazy that some Drs still peddle this disempowering message and it’s usually paired with a disc pathology of some kind. I’m not a surgeon or an orthopedic Dr but I’ll challenge any specialist to see the effects of exercise pre and post rehab. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —There can be instances post surgery where specific movements might be lost with a fusion but you still give the person as much tissue tolerance, movement and strength to move them as far away from the weakness as possible. Words empower and disempower and it’s time we used words to make those we work with more robust rather than this archaic thinking that should be resigned to the last century. We all need to be able to haul our own body weight and often beyond that. "I used to be stuck in the box of bone stacking and joint stacking as an acrobat and yoga teacher without accounting for the variables that place the joints in that position. At FP, accounting for the many variables that drive movement and bring the joints into specific positions through dynamic actions is what we do. Killer post from FP Vancouver⠀

Ever wonder what is putting your joints into their positioning? Just because you can establish what appears to be neutral joint positioning doesn’t mean you’re creating a properly associated tension to that position. For example, if my knees are fixated in a hyperextension a simple cue would be for me to bend my knees. Simple enough right? Unfortunately not. We have to think about what is the driving factor that is actually creating a knee flexion in the first place. The body typically chooses the path of least resistance which usually leads to an inefficient tension being created. This is an extremely important variable that needs to be accounted for in movement. @functionalpatterns we address these variables on the most microscopic level to pinpoint where the body is establishing tension from and make sure we are creating points of most EFFICIENCY which often means deviating from the path of least resistance.⠀

Overreaching, overtraining and pushing the body too much for too long is something I would never ever recommend.

But, stupidly, I did exactly that a couple of months ago.

*Improved movement co-ordination through mental rehearsal*

Two groups of people who had never studied piano were taught a sequence of notes, showing them which fingers to move and letting them hear the notes as they were played. Then members of one group, the mental practice group, sat in front of an electric piano keyboard, two hours a day, for five days and imagined both playing the sequence and hearing it played. A second physical practice group actually played the music two hours a day for five days.

Both groups had their brains mapped before the experiment, each day, during it, and afterwards. Then both groups were asked to play the sequence, and a computer measured the accuracy of their performance.

The results showed that both groups learned to play the sequence, and both groups showed similar brain map changes. The mental practice alone group produced the same physical changes in the motor system as actually playing the piece.

By the end of the fifth day, the changes in motor singles to the muscles were the same in both groups, and the imaging players were as accurate as the actual players were on their third day.

Plan A was to get in an hour of swim drills. But after getting caught out in a nasty storm ⛈ a couple of years ago on a run, ( #terrifying #willneverforget ) I choose to be safe when weather rolls in. Blasting the legs and glutes with some plyo was plan B. Foot didn’t complain once! Things are looking better but we’re still going to take it slow.

45 minutes of plyo outside in the sprinkles (lol the weather fizzled out) plus core work. Sticking with this and swimming for at least the rest of this week.

💥LABRAL TEARS💥
----------
🔎Labral tears can result in shoulder instability (not everyone), which describes a condition of increased joint mobility that affects the passive restraints of the shoulder joint (labrum, capsule and ligaments) and can be broadly classified as traumatic or atraumatic. Traumatic cases result from an injury and are usually present on only one shoulder (unilateral) and demonstrate increased mobility in only one direction (unidirectional). Atraumatic cases, on the other hand, often present without an injury and demonstrate increased mobility on both shoulders and in multiple directions (multi-directional instability).
-
📊Both forms of instability can cause pain and severely impair function, but can also respond to a conservative care program focused on reducing pain, avoiding stress to the capsule, labrum and/or shoulder ligaments and improving neuromuscular control. Although both classifications of instability can improve with rehab, improvements do vary by type. Research has demonstrated that approximately 15% of traumatic cases showed good to excellent results with exercise while 83% of atraumatic cases showed improvement.
-
🏋🏼‍♂️If you suffer from instability of the shoulder, make sure to give conservative care, specifically, neuromuscular control and muscle strength & endurance exercises a try before rushing into surgical reconstruction.
-
📍Shown here are several exercises designed to improve neuromuscular control/stability of the shoulder complex, which can be beneficial when dealing with shoulder instability.
-
✅These exercises are also great for anyone just looking to add something new to their shoulder program. Give them a try and let me know if you have any questions.

We stick to our promise of the foot shaped shoe - thats why we believe we have the best functional footwear on the market which enables healthy, fully functioning feet.
