LOCUST POSE - A lot of people love to hate this posture. I don't know about you, but this one always challenges me, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME! If you feel the same, you're probably thinking "your gonna have to work hard to convince me to "try harder" in this posture!"
Oh, we love a challenge....okay, here goes.
Why do we find this posture such a challenge? Because you're working on increasing the strength of your upper spine here, which is just not all that easy...not easy at all. But as the Yoga saying goes...'it's the postures that challenge us the most, that we need the most!
So don't give up on this one, there are so many benefits to glean from Locust, that make perseverance definitely worth it!
So what are the benefits? There's a few...you ready?
As well as getting most of the benefits that you just got from Cobra Pose (the previous posture in the sequence - check out yesterday's posture to refresh your memory), Locust will also help to increase your concentration and determination. It's is obviously great for improving the strength in your upper spine, whilst increasing the flexibility of your lower spine. This means less back pain, 👍!
Your spine isn't the only body part to benefit here...nope, this one will help to cure tennis elbow, cubital and carpal tunnel. Also it improves the strength of your shoulders, pectoral muscles and (obviously) your spine.
Locust will also help to boost circulation, firm your buttocks 🍑, and improve the tone of your legs.
Oh, and if all ☝️ isn't enough incentive to persevere with Locust...you will also improve core strength when you practice this posture! #abtastic

This week of #WeAreJBY we want to introduce you to one of our lovely front desk staff and newest Bikram teacher, Jordan!🤩 She was raised in Sparks, NV and went to Edward C. Reed High school which coincidentally enough was directly across the street from the Sparks Bikram Yoga studio.🙏🏻 She took her very first class with her dad when she was about 11 years old while Barry taught. Jordan says “it was fairytale first class experience if you ask me, and from there it became something my dad and I did together.”✨ She then moved to Seattle shortly after graduating high school and since then has gone to a couple places in the U.S. to get tattooed.✈️ The universe somehow brought her back to Reno and we were lucky enough to hire her on at Juice Box, now on a new path for the better.💙 If you’ve never met Jordan but you would love to, come take a class from her! You won’t regret it.😊💧

2. It calms your mind and relieves anxiety. It also helps quiet the mind.
3. It helps relieve headaches and insomnia.
4. This bend gives your digestive organs a good massage, thereby improving digestion.
5. The kidneys and liver are activated.
6. The thighs and knees become strong.
7. Menopause and menstrual problems are alleviated.
8. This asana helps cure high blood pressure, asthma, infertility, sinusitis, and osteoporosis.

COBRA POSE - This is the first of the spine strengtheners and is a popular one amongst a lot of students. The reason...you can see yourself progress in this pose, just for a moment, as you come into and out of the posture your eyes are on yourself and you can see, (as well as feel), the posture, which for many (especially in the early stages of your practice) is kinda cool. Being able to see yourself, even if for just a moment on the way in and on the way out, can be quite motivational. BUT, don't get too distracted by your own reflection! You want your eyes to continue to lift in order to encourage your spine to do the same. .
Cobra focuses on strengthening the lower spine, whilst creating flexibility in the upper spine. In working the lower part of your spine you will help to reduce and relieve back pain and will over time reduce tension in your lower back.
One for the ladies...Cobra is great for relieving menstrual symptoms, such as back ache, cramps and even irregularity.
Don't get jealous chaps, there is plenty for you to benefit from in cobra too!
Over time you will boost your levels of concentration, AND best of all... the functionality of your liver will improve...(in my book that means an extra glass of prosecco over Christmas lunch 🍾😉)!
One tip to remember, keep breathing throughout, using 80/20 breath, this will help you to move the spine more freely without the tension that will result when you hold your breath!
All of ☝️ makes for a spine tinglingly great little posture, wouldn't you agree?
