Sameer was born to parents contaminated by a carcinogenic and mutagenic water supply. The chemical disaster in Bhopal in December of 1984 is considered one of the worst industrial disasters in history, killing thousands. The poisonous legacy of the abandoned pesticide factory will continue to affect generations until the responsbile companies are forced to take action.
Today countless millions of people are living on the wrong side of a toxic divide, their health and wellbeing threatened by exposure to substances linked to cancer, diabetes, birth defects, respiratory illnesses and other diseases and disabilities.
This Instagram account provides a visual account of this toxic divide. It is curated by Baskut Tuncak @baskut_t, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and Toxics (link in bio), and his friends and colleagues. It is based on their research into the plight of millions of victims, like Sameer and his family, for whom the right to a healthy environment is not a right, but a privilege.
