🇪🇪 There is a funny saying in Estonia that Tallinn "leaps" because it has a short and a long leg - these are the actual names of the two streets that connect the upper and the lower town.
The pictured Short Leg (Lühike jalg) is a ripid passage for pedestrians while the longer and less ripid Long Leg (Pikk jalg) was used for horse carriages, to move cattle and merchandise. Both streets ended with a gate that was closed from dusk till dawn.
The reason for that was that the two parts of the town were two distinct adminitative units during the medieval times and never got along well. Toompea, also called the Upper Town was ruled by the landowners of Estonia, mostly Baltic-German aristocracy; while the Lower Town was where most of the merchants and artisans lived.
P. S. The lower and the upper town were united only in 1877!
