After 11 months and 3 weeks worth of planning, hundreds of meetings and thousands of man hours the 22nd edition of the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge is here. Over 11km of fencing, around 4000 pieces of branding and signage along the route and venue, a vehicle contingent of over 600 in the convoy and of course the 25000 of Joburg’s maddest and raddest will take to a fully closed route to tackle the 94,7km behemoth. It’s always a pleasure to be a part of this event and to see all the scribbles, hand written notes, power point presentations, memos and voice recordings come to fruition. This event is the result of a massive team effort that couldn’t be accomplished without our amazing suppliers - the unsung hero’s who have pooled together to create one spectacular show ! Wishing all the best to all my friends, family and the rest of the participants for tomorrow’s race - to the people that are hampered or have their Sunday disrupted by the race, chill out grab a hose pipe and some beers and go out and support the remarkable individuals that are putting themselves through one hell of a test! Looking forward to wrapping up the work year with what looks like to be the best event yet! There may be some that can do what we do but none that can do what we do the way we do it - powerful @harfordsportspromotions 🤙🏻#hsp#telkom947cyclechallenge#telkom#947#cyclechallenge#events#bestinthebusiness
“A coach is someone who tells you what you DON’T want to hear, who has you see what you DON’T want to see, so you can ACHIEVE what you always known you could.”
Over the last 7 months, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with #TheCoach @tomroutly First him being my patient upon which the roles were switched as he became my coach. Now, we are great friends! .
Normally, I play that role for those who entrust me but every doctor needs their own doctor and I could not have chosen a more passionate, knowledgeable, hard working and dedicated person to partner up with in helping me achieve this very personal endeavour as well as challenge myself beyond my so-called comfort zones. .
I have had the distinct pleasure of working with many wonderful people over the years in a number of countries and I’m proud to say that tomorrow; at age 41; I go into my first ever #BodyBuilding challenge with #TheCoach @tomroutly by my side! .

Hormone Hierarchy Pt. 4 🔺
Leptin - Produced in the fat cells, this hormone suppresses hunger. It would make sense that the more fat cells you have the more leptin is in your bloodstream….so why are people with high body fat percentages still hungry?? Just like your body can become resistant to insulin, there is also a resistance to leptin. This can also happen with habitual dieting and HIGH FAT diets. Your body is not answering the signals, therefore you keep eating. Typically, we see leptin and insulin resistance together.
Ghrelin - Produced in the gut, this hormone tells your brain its time to eat! It also aides in gut mobility, sleep rhythm, and insulin secretion (this is where fasted cardio comes in to play). Diets full of healthy carbs and protein, helps control the release of ghrelin. Post dieting (and weight cuts) there is a higher concentration of ghrelin in the bloodstream. This helps explain why weight gain happens post fight camp or restrictive dieting.
Sleep Cycle - When you fall asleep your body increases production of leptin, which allows us to sleep 7+ hours without waking up because our body needs food. Lack of sleep can lead to leptin insensitivity and slower metabolism.
Estrogen/Progesterone - Studys have shown:
1. Estrogen only birth control increases production of ghrelin AND your brain’s sensitivity to the hormone. That means your brain is constantly telling you its time to eat! With progesterone only BC or a combo of E/P, these effects aren’t seen.
2. Some forms of birth control can also decrease the brain’s sensitivity to leptin, causing you to think it’s time to eat more often than it should be.
Morale of the story? Eat a balanced diet, take care of your gut, increase restful sleep, and listen to your hunger hormones!
