Just look at the difference here with a 30 min bike ride; the pic on the left is based on a reading from my heart rate monitor that is calibrated to me, the right pic was auto generated by the machine - almost double the actual amount (roughly) burned. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Instructors - when did you last say ‘well done’ to a participant?

A wise man once said to me ‘think of the last time someone congratulated you on doing something well’

Take 30 seconds 🤔 - How long ago was it for you?

Now take 30 seconds to think about how often children (yours, if you have kids) get told ‘well done’ 🤔

Why do kids get told ‘well done’ much more often? Well, there are lots of sound reasons for this: .
- Build their confidence
- Confirm to them they are getting better at something so it’s worth persevering
- Confirm to them what they’ve done is good, you’re pleased and it makes it more likely they’ll do it again. .

Wouldn’t these same reasons stand for your participants 🤷‍♂️? As instructors a good deal of our focus, understandably, is on people improving, being better, progressing, but there are lots of opportunities to increase the chances of them continuing with a ‘well done’.

What to consider? 
1. Don’t fake it. Unless you have something (see ‘be specific’) don’t just pay lip service to it. When you then have something genuine its lost its impact. 
2. Right Time. Some people love being picked out during a class and told they’re doing well. Some really don’t 😬. If in doubt pick a quieter setting. Great opportunities are before class (reflect on the last class they did with you or how they’ve progressed over a period of time) or afterwards during clear-up or leaving the studio. 
3. Be specific. Have something they will take away with them and DON’T overthink it. Simply recognising someone’s effort can be a huge deal. Technique improvements, heavier weights, body shape change, their performance in class, nailing a new move in Zumba etc. etc.

Instructors - when did you last say ‘well done’ to a participant? . A wise man once said to me ‘think of the last time someone congratulated you on doing something well’ Take 30 seconds 🤔 - How long ago was it for you? Now take 30 seconds to think about how often children (yours, if you have kids) get told ‘well done’ 🤔 . Why do kids get told ‘well done’ much more often? Well, there are lots of sound reasons for this: . - Build their confidence - Confirm to them they are getting better at something so it’s worth persevering - Confirm to them what they’ve done is good, you’re pleased and it makes it more likely they’ll do it again. . Wouldn’t these same reasons stand for your participants 🤷‍♂️? As instructors a good deal of our focus, understandably, is on people improving, being better, progressing, but there are lots of opportunities to increase the chances of them continuing with a ‘well done’. . What to consider? 1. Don’t fake it. Unless you have something (see ‘be specific’) don’t just pay lip service to it. When you then have something genuine its lost its impact. 2. Right Time. I fully believe a healthy body = a healthy mind. Motivate that friend in need to get active in whatever shape or form that activity is. Walk along a beach, up a mountain, go to the gym and put all your focus into that for that hour, join a team with a friend and gain the social benefits of meeting new people. Ask you’re friend to play a game of badminton even if you’re both awful, just have a laugh with it. Whatever activity you chose it will help you to feel better!

I‘ve recently bought an indoor bike trainer from @aldiuk to increase my cardio/activity levels a little in between sessions 🚴🏻‍♀️🙌. It was only £50, was free delivery online and easy to put together. I have to say it’s a little noisy (which I drown out with music 🎶 so it’s cool!), but it’s a really solid piece of kit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Safe - Are the exercises and movements appropriate to the ability of those attending? Do they fit into the purpose of the session? If something looks a bit mad it probably is?

Starts on time - Yes, this is basic but if a class regularly starts late there’s either something wrong with the timetable or something wrong with the instructor who isn’t managing their schedule well enough.

Music - Now bear in mind music is a very individual thing. If there’s 20 people in the room there will be 20 different tastes in music. But does the music fit the class? Is the music motivational?
. 
Motivating - This is the key reason I hear most often why people decide to attend classes so it helps them train more often and get more out of each session they do. If the instructor in front of you is dull, doesn’t seem to be enjoying the workout, or pours out their shit day to you, swerve it and find another class.
. 
Coaching - Whilst coaching a class of 20 people can be challenging you should be hearing pointers on how you should move, what the movement should feel or look like so that you can either improve the quality of your movement or have it confirmed that you’re moving well. That person is there to help you improve your fitness, flexibility, strength, coordination and ultimately the quality of your movement.

Two tube stations I use regularly are Regent’s Park & Borough. Both have lifts & stairs.

102 steps & it’s quicker than the lift. Simple.🤷🏻‍♂️

There’ll be choices all around you throughout your day. From getting away from your desk & going for a walk at lunch, to not eating those snacks someone has just bought the office.🍩

Yep it’s Sunday night at the end of the week...My goal is to get more ‘workouts’ done at home and I struggle to stay consistent on the weekends. Aaannd it’s really hard to stay motivated when the weather is changing. It’s cold outside and I enjoy doing activities where I can breathe in the fresh air. 
My old hip injury used to ache so much that I just gave up doing much, especially when the weather was colder because it was easier to put it off. 
As I’m learning to give my body what it needs, I’m thankful that just 2 tablespoons a day of this liquid goodness keeps my joints from aching and I can tackle any activity I want indoor or outdoor💪 
Tonight I did a HIIT routine with weights (at home) and it was fun! Your body deserves to move ⭐️EVERYDAY ⭐️ You are worth it!
