My wife and I attend Beignet Café in Madison for our usual Sunday Morning Brunch outing. Both of us have spent extended time in Louisiana so we were looking forward to the Cajun undertones. The café was a small storefront in a strip mall. I had the Egg Bake with a side of Andouille Sausage while my wife chose the Breakfast Bowl. My dish was served with onions, bell peppers, celery, and olives baked into the eggs with a French bread edge. The spicy Sausage added just enough heat to pair nicely with the mound of eggs. My wife’s dish was the simple eggs, bacon, hash brown served in a bowl, and I must say it was cooked to perfection. I will probably lean towards this dish when we come back. We finished the meal off with two traditional Beignets. For those not familiar with Beignets they are a cross between a sopaipilla and a fresh southern style donut piled high with Powdered Sugar. Having eaten at Café Du Monde, this is the closest thing outside of New Orleans I have eaten. This was also the best part of the meal due to watching my wife trying to eat the Beignet while wearing a black blouse. It’s just not possible to eat one gracefully.
At $25 for 2 sweet teas, 2 entrées, and 2 Beignets the prices are very reasonable and service was prompt and friendly throughout the meal even with all tables being fully occupied. In conclusion, I will be back for Brunch to try the Dirty Grits and will try back during lunch one day to try a Po Boy.
