This photoshoot was transformative. When the photographer suggested I take off my sweatshirt I was dubious for two reasons:
.
1. It was about 45 degrees in this Orangerie in Normandy, and the stone room was... um... chilly.
.
2. And also... “Ummmm. I don’t know if I’m ready for this.” My history up to this point was to hate all photos of myself and stare at my body as though it were some foreign object in desperate need of shaping, molding, cutting, and reforming. My childhood was full of crying over photos, and my parents learned not to show me pictures to save me from myself. I learned to roll my eyes and look away. Then I got into the world of acting and theater which is a variable smorgasbord of headshots and auditions and videos and “your body and your face are your job.”
.
And so a casual, “why don’t you take off your sweatshirt,” which makes TOTAL SENSE for a yoga photoshoot was... kinda loaded.
.
So... it felt important to rip off the sweatshirt and go with it.
.
This marked a significant shift in how I viewed my body. And today I’m doing a boudoir shoot for the SAME reason.
.
I got a questionnaire this morning from the photographer, @breathlessboudoir: “on a scale from 0-10 how nervous are you?” (0 being cool as a cucumber.)
.
Miraculously, I noted myself at a three.
.
So we’ll see how this shindig goes down, and I’ll share in my stories today if I remember! (Sometimes I get super present and forget...)

The journey of self love and discovering all of our own inner intricacies is ongoing. (And by the way... as the time to leave grows closer... I find the nerves ramping up 😂)

RED VELVET WAFFLES W. CREAM CHEESE ICING 👇

Serves 4 small waffles 
Dry ingredients:
1/3 cup oat flour 
1/3 cup buckwheat flour 
2-3 tbsp chocolate protein powder 
1/2 tbsp cacao powder 
1/2 tbsp baking powder 
Salt

Wet ingredients:
1/2 + 1/3 cup coconut milk 
1/8 cup melted coconut oil 
1/2 tbsp lemon juice 
Few drops of vanilla extract 
2 tsp beet powder 
Cream cheese icing:
1/4 cup cream cheese 
1 tbsp honey 
Splash of coconut milk 
1/2 tbsp lemon juice ➡️ Whisk the dry and the wet ingredients in two separate bowls. ➡️ Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix to a smooth batter.
➡️ Heat an iron and pour ~2 tbsp batter per waffle.
➡️ Meanwhile the waffles are cooking, whip the ingredients for the icing in a bowl.
➡️ Serve the waffles with the icing drizzled on top. Enjoy! .

Let me tell you about this girl.
.
She’s afraid of food and she is terrified of either gaining weight or losing weight (she basically feels out of control when it comes to her body; she fears breaking any of her “rules” or shoulds, because she may gain weight/lose weight/get sick/never have the perfect body.)
.
She hates getting dressed and always fears clothes not fitting (she believes certain clothes/sizes are GOOD, not for others’ bodies, only her own; i.e. the “jeans that were smaller than she’s ever worn.” She pretty much thinks everyone else has it figured out. Her body and her mind are somehow broken.)
.
She believes that emotional/binge eating is something she will deal with for the rest of her life.
.
She fears she’ll never feel normal around food or that she’ll end up with diabetes because of the habits she’s had with food her whole life.
.
She’s terrified that she’s broken her body and she may never get her cycle back. She fears both never having children AND having children because she has such strict rules around food and exercise that children would certainly interrupt (let’s not even talk about the weight gain that would come with pregnancy).
.
She’s also scared she’ll end up alone and unloved because who could ever love HER—she doesn’t even like or love herself, and she wakes up every day feeling fat/unhappy and can’t stand to look in the mirror or see pictures of herself.
.
She fears certain foods like sugar, fat, gluten, dairy, carbs, and meat, and she’s afraid she’ll hate her body forever.
.
She fears being stuck in normalcy and never fulfilling her purpose.
.
She fears procreating and bringing a young woman into a world that is so cruel to women around body/looks.
.
I look at her and I see how hard she was trying to be okay. She put in the work. She refused to accept her fear as “how it must be.” It’s good to know that, on the other side of all of this fear... there was THIS and now and the constant evolution of what it means to be a woman in a body in this time and this place.

And if you’ve ever felt any of these things, or if you’re feeling any of them now, please find solace in the fact that you’re far from alone.

If you happen to have an extra 5 minutes one morning and a ripe 🍌 - fancy up your oatmeal/yogurt/toast! Also a guaranteed way to impress brunch guests with ease.

How to:
1️⃣ Heat a pan on medium. Add a bit of coconut or a mild flavored oil (1/2 tsp is fine for those who measure). Option to use cooking spray if preferred.
2️⃣ Slice banana in half lengthwise (or cut in half first the short way like I did here)
3️⃣ Place the bananas cut side down onto the hot pan. Sear until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side, watching to keep it from burning. Option to top with ground cinnamon or nutmeg. Enjoy warm!

When I first begin working with a new client, I ask her to divulge her food rules to me. Sometimes, she says she doesn’t have any, which is—though she doesn’t mean to lie to me—a lie. She just doesn’t yet KNOW that she has food rules, because she is under the illusion that she is free (and possibly practicing intuitive eating). But then she starts telling me about her struggle with Oreos, and we enter into breakthrough territory.

None of us would struggle with Oreos if we did not have rules associated with Oreos.

I’d like to present a case for you that suggests will power (or a presumed lack thereof) is not something you need to be getting mad at yourself about. The reason you eat a whole sleeve of Oreos (or insert the food that gets you down when you can’t control yourself around it OR you feel guilty if you chow down on it) is not because you lack will power.
.

I just booked two photo shoots for the exact same time as Aunt Flo is scheduled to visit. WHY DO I CONSISTENTLY DO THIS?!

It’s become a bit of a joke in my world: I schedule a photoshoot. Hours later I realize... oh. Huh. I bet that’s the same date as my period. My guy just laughs and says: if you book a photoshoot, I know already.

Every photoshoot for my book? Aunt Flo was by my side.

Here’s the thing: I know PMS doesn’t HAVE to be a thing of horrid symptoms. If I’m very careful and eat all the foods I know my body loves and also don’t drink any alcohols or caffeine and also double down on my spiritual practices (don’t mind me, I’ll just be over here very loudly chanting away my uterus demons), then it ain’t so bad. And that’s all cumulative, so it’s not like one day I can just say: “oh okay. Period coming! Enact perfect mode.”

Also: I don’t believe in perfect or restriction of ANY kind.
.
I believe in Healthy Hedonism, in which I value my health but also know that pleasure is a barometer for my relationship to my values; so yes—I’ll say it again for those in the back of the room: I value my health. But I also value JOY and spontaneity and friends and family and NOT perfectionism or adhering to any strict plan or scheme.
.
I’m doubling down on this philosophy of mine in lieu of my scheduling realization. The question I must continually ask myself is: what does my body want and WHY? In each moment, how can I prioritize pleasure and happiness without sacrificing the joy of future me?
.
Future me also really wants now me to stop scheduling photo shoots during her period. Listen, it’s just a plain fact that the actual hormones that are at play during that part of your cycle make one feel lethargic, introverted, and introspective. Ovulation is the sweet spot for photoshoots: the hormones at play make ya feel more extroverted and... you actually LOOK better in a photo (fer real: a collection of scientists actually researched this. The study is named: “Female facial attractiveness increases during the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle.”)

Okay so those are my thoughts on THAT and also consulting my calendar in the future for booking from now on.

Update: My head congestion is unreal.  I can’t hear a thing it seems like. Sudafed would be great, but I’m not supposed to take that while pregnant.  Currently, my back is constantly sore.  If these two things could just subside pleeeeeease, I would feel 120%!!! Dripping sweat doesn’t help drain a damn thing outta my head, either.

So here I am reading up againnnnn on Eleuthero Root.  It is in my B12 beet bacopa powder.  I was using it daily before I conceived and before I knew I was pregnant.  It is natural.  So why not take it while pregnant, right?! Not if you are hypertensive though.  Also, i wouldn’t take it before a #HIIT class if you are taking any hiit while pregnant.  Last time I went into my OB my BP was only 98/64!  SoOooOoo...if this will possibly help my immunity, I’m gonna take maybe half a dose today.

1-2 tablespoons of Wonderfoods beetroot powder
400g can of chickpeas
2 garlic cloves
1 tablespoon tahini
2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
A good squeeze of lemon

Method:
Place all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and whiz to create a coarse paste. 
Slowly add the olive oil until the mixture is thick and smooth.
Season with salt and pepper and serve with Turkish bread, veggie sticks or crackers of your choice!

After a 5 year break from Bikram, I brought my guy last night to see if it’s still my PB&Jam.

Toooootally different experience. Staring at your half naked body in a mirror for 90 minutes is torture when you’re spending lots of time each day trying to effect change in your body through food and exercise. And that’s what I did when I used to practice the 26 posture series nearly every single day for close to three years.
.
It’s a whole ‘nother thing when you have a respect and love for your body and its strength, beauty, and truth that goes beyond what you see reflected back to you in the mirror. (Though I did spend a fair amount of time telling my body how much I loved it during the practice, too. Just for good measure.)
.
It’s hard to put it all into words. So I guess that’s why I wrote a 450 page book on the topic.

Thank god for all the yoga teachers (on and off the mat) who helped me get to here. And lord knows the journey ain’t complete.

FIT GIRL FAVES #4: MY NEW WORKOUT BEVERAGE

Yesterday was Friday wasn't it? Seriously guys I literally blink and a week is gone. I totally spaced yesterday so here's your #fitgirlfaves Post...... better late than never! 
This week's feature was a last minute decision. I have a lot of awesome shit to tell you about but to be honest, I haven't felt very good these last two weeks. I plan on getting into this with you in great detail on a live video in the near future. I think I know what the problem is because the steps I've taken toward a solution seem to be working which is good news! Yesterday was the best I've felt in weeks and today I finally feel normal. One of the steps I've taken is to #detox my body. My friend Kristin has taught me so much (you really should check out her page on Facebook KBA Fitness/Wellness and read all she has to say!) Through chatting with her I have an idea of what might be going on with my body. 
I now have an awesome new concoction I drink while I'm working out. No fat burners, no pre workout, no chemicals, giving my body a rest from all that. Tey the recipe below iff you're looking for a natural booster at the gym. This drink gives me such good clean energy!!! To your water add........ - 1/2 tsp #bakingsoda (helps dissolve lactic acids and keep you alkaline, exercise enhancer, boosts kidney function, good for your joints.) - 1 tsp organic #beetpowder (rich in nitrates which your body will turn into #nitricoxide, will give you that pre-workout boost, stamina, increase your blood flow and lowers your blood pressure.) -1 tsp #glutamine powder (essential amino acid great for immune system, intestinal health, muscle retention and muscle recovery.) After making beet noodles a couple weeks ago I wanted to find a more efficient way to make beet powder. Let’s just say the original process took a ridiculous amount of time for very little product. After multiple failed experiments I have finally found a technique that I will gladly continue to use... a juicer! By using beet juice instead of water I can reduce the amount of powder I need. Plus after I juice the beets I take the leftover pulp and dehydrate that. Seeing as the liquid was already removed from it, it gets to a powdering state way faster. It’s a win win!
