Walking north up the disused trackbed, all of a sudden the public footpath takes a steep incline up the embankment. This can't be right.
I continue along the original alignment and am presented with the ghostly, bricked up southern portal of Baynards Railway Tunnel. More than fifty years have passed since the final steam train passed through this incredibly tight and steep tunnel - since abandonment the northern end has been demolished, and half way up the tunnel a giant wooden plug had been built up against the in-fill.
Some urban explorers have recently abseiled down a ventilation shaft into its pitch black abyss. Personally I was too scared even to get within 20 feet of it!!!
Llanerchaeron parkrun... Just perfect, my third or fourth #beechingaxe parkrun. Very nice and very clean loos. Started on time. It's a flat and pretty woodland course (I saw ramsons, wood anemone, primrose, celandine, wood sorrel, bluebells, wood spurge...). There's a cafe and a national trust house. BBC and ye.no say "11 o'clock? Cloudy"... Wrong
A long story behind this marvel of Victorian engineering - the Two Tiered bridge south of Rudgwick in West Sussex was originally a brick arch spanning the river, but inspectors were not happy with the gradient trains would be required to stop on at Rudwick Station, so ordered the embankments be raised to lessen it. Rather than demolish the original bridge, it was kept as a flying buttress and a cast iron girder bridge was built above it, resulting in this unique situation. The line closed as part of the Beeching Axe in 1965. Extensively repaired in 2017, it now carries the Downs Link cycle path/bridle way.
Sign on the platform at the abandoned Riccarton Junction railway station in the Scottish Borders. It's literally in the middle of nowhere - a small village for railway workers grew up around the station, but it was abandoned when the station closed in 1969. This sign was erected by a group that attempted some restoration at the station a few years ago, but apparently they all fell out with each other and the project was abandoned, leading to the whole area returning to nature. It's a very isolated spot.
