Another fun fact: ceramic tiles serve more than the purpose of decoration. They help control temperature and humidity, especially useful in a city like Sevilla, which often gets extremely hot and humid in the summer.

India Buildings on Victoria Street , Edinburgh.
I discovered this moody architectural marvel on one of my meandering walks in the old town and was delighted to know it had an Indian connection and name .
The building was built by architect David Cousins in 1864 , with some noteworthy features. Amongst these is a “bartizan” , a kind of turret at the top and a domed rotunda .
It was likely named after an eponymous building in Liverpool, whose merchants were celebrating the end of the East India Company’s monopoly trade with India . Clearly a lot of money to be made there!
The buildings had fallen into disrepair due to neglect, until recent redevelopment in 2016, amidst much opposition. But, all is not lost.
India Buildings, in its new 225 chambers avatar will be Virgin Hotels’ first European hotel, slated to open in 2020. Virgin has assured that it will restore the buildings to their former glory , whilst retaining their historical heritage.
Above one of the windows are inscribed the words -“Dominus Providebit” -The Lord will provide - Let’s hope Virgin is a godsend !
