Here is no place to live. Here is no place to sire a family. Days in the jungle courting nature, my skin returning to Incan gold with the glow of a lovers embrace with nary a bite but the second I return to Houston I am beset by fetid, chemical stinging insects with jaws that bite, claws that catch.
With tardy terror I now realize we have been living in the savage lands and our adventure was to Elysium.
Here plants lay unnaturally manicured. Branches stretched twixt cruel man-wrought machinations. Perversions to nature cruelly kept alive with poisons and sprinklers. Here the land screams as more is smothered in concrete and late stage capitalism by the day.
We need to go back to the rainforest. The cool holy waters. To the sacred clearings where the Maya still worship on secret altars.
We need to go back home.
7. New Orleans & Cajun Country. Dive bars, an alligator whisperer, homes on storey-high stilts, cheap Vietnamese food, a singing tree, terrible drivers and even worse roads, voodoo altars, Marie Laveau, elegant retirees, Old Fashioneds, old men playing chess in the street, shotgun homes, grand mausoleums, rosaries, beads, daily storms, a mystery house of junk and Americana, the scars of Katrina still evident 13 years on, an abandoned theme park, candlelit streetlights, shrimp creole and jambalaya, Saturday night in the French Quarter, swamps and bayous, enormous spiders, Spanish moss, oysters for 50 cents, sugar plantations, old slave cabins, 3lb po’ boys, a private Cajun and Zydeco musical performance from our bonkers host, dusting off my A-Level French and getting away with it, boudins, barely any sleep for days.

It has been nearly one year since #Hurricane Harvey devastated the #bayou city. In the weeks and months after the storm, creative #arts therapists from the #TMC came together to heal the emotional wounds left on victims of the storm. The group hosted four #Harvey Healing Days across the city to provide music, dancing, singing and healing. At each HHD, participants wrote messages on cloth strips that eventually became leaves on the Harvey Healing Tree. On August 25th, Harvey’s one-year anniversary, the Harvey Healing Tree will be unveiled at Discovery Green. #hope#healing#recovery
