Here’s a look at the mountain of vegetative debris that’s piling up on the empty land next to the Bald Head Club. This is where the dump trucks unload during the day. I’m assuming - but am not certain - that from here, the debris is then loaded into containers that will eventually be hauled off the island. Quite a process, and the work has been nonstop. #hurricaneflorence2018

Everyone gets a job in the post-Florence cleanup process - except for maybe the dog. He was probably sleeping while his best boy pal was busy getting the grime off of the golf carts. We are really lucky they are still working - for many on the island, this isn’t the case. #hurricaneflorence2018

The Chapel in Bald Head Island—probably the most relaxing vacation I have ever been on.
BHI was hard hit by Hurricane Florence; don’t think that the recovery is over just because it’s not in your feed.
#tbt to my days back on Bald Head Island.
Looking back on it, my time on BHI was really a deciding point in life. I came in undecided about pursuing conservation biology or veterinary medicine.
While I was there, I came across the original version of the Star Thrower story that most people have probably heard some iteration of, where a person throws stranded starfish back in the ocean because "it made a difference to that one." While I'd always loved the story's simplified message, it turned out the original was a much deeper story. A particular passage really resonated with where I was in my life:
"Love not the world,” the Biblical injunction runs. “But I do love the world,” I whispered. "I love its small ones, the things beaten in the strangling surf, the singing bird which falls and is not seen again, the lost ones, the failures of the world.” Thus was the renunciation of my scientific heritage.
Working a job that occasionally literally involved rescuing fallen birds from the strangling surf, and trying to decide between careers in science versus medicine, this really helped me figure out what I wanted in life. While I loved trying out a ton of new skills during this externship, nothing really made me come to life as much as those wildlife emergency calls. From there my choice was simple. Somewhere between 7am water quality sampling and 11pm deer spotlighting, I managed to find the time to apply to vet school.
In fact, I love the Star Thrower so much, I resolved myself to get a starfish tattoo, and wound up making it a reality last year. It. Lately it's been really easy to get bogged down in the stress and burnout of school, but this tattoo and what it means help me remember where I came from. I really am living the dream, and need to remember that.
Today I had the privilege of photographing most gorgeous bridals in Raleigh today (not this bride above). I can’t wait until I can share them but until then, I’ll just reminisce over Meredith’s bridals at @merrimonwynne ✨
Fun Fact: Meredith redesigned her wedding dress and it’s still one of my favorites!
