🇬🇧Two things define you.
Your patience when you have nothing, and your attitude when you have everything.
🇪🇸Hay dos cosas que te definen.
Tú paciencia cuando no tienes nada, y tú actitud cuando lo tienes todo.
The night before we left on our Salkantay Trek @jonofirst and I fell into an argument. With our history we have plenty of things we could’ve chosen to argue about, but this was a stupid fight about packing that quickly escalated. Mix exhaustion from travel, a huge distance from your comfort zone, nerves, and weeks of never leaving each other’s side and you have the perfect recipe for a heated disagreement. The argument ended with one of us storming out in search of the nearest bar and the other left battling the bags. Exactly what you want before a 4am wake up. So why am I sharing this? Because travel isn’t always pretty. It’s not always tiny photo squares and a filter. It’s raw. It’s real. And it’s all so very worth it.
The Salkantay Trek took five days and I want to share it all with you, bit by bit, piece by piece.
There’s no way I could fit it all into one article so here’s day one of the trek. I hope you enjoy all the pieces. ☝🏼LINK IN BIO!
We left Cusco on a five-day Salkantay Trek last week. The guide arrived at our hostel the night before for a safety briefing and looked surprised to see Ivy. He asked me in Spanish if she was coming with us on the trek and I told him she was. He said a child had never been on the trek before - five days through mountain terrain, snow, jungle and heights of up to 4,600 meters above sea level. I said I knew and we’d be fine. When he left, for a minute I sat there wrapped in anxiety and nerves. Would we be OK? I double checked our bags and the worry passed. We’d be OK. We’d be more than OK. We hiked and slept in tents and hiked some more. It was one of the hardest and most incredible things I’ve ever done. On the fifth day, we reached Machu Picchu. The climb up sent pains through my carves, each breath not quite deep enough, each step followed by another and when I thought the climb would never end, we made it. One of the most breathtaking places I have ever seen. Why am I sharing the end of the trek first? Because I still can’t take my eyes off it.

When I read you bedtime stories, the words will flow from our memories. The pictures won’t be found among pages, but will be the smiling faces from our photographs. We will relive our adventures over and over in our hearts, and all the while always making more. Thanks for being the best adventure buddy Ives. .
The salt flats might not flag as a children’s destination but Ivy had the time of her life creating these photos!
