\\ Artists. Writers. Art-writers. Artists as writers. Writer artists. Artists who write. Writers on art. All of the above at, ‘Artists and Writers Unite!’ in Sheffield. Roco Creative Coop hosted the event by Sheffield Creative Guild in conjunction with Corridor8. Sheffield, like other medium-sized cities, has its own issues with funding and sustainability, and like Nottingham, has independents and a network of artists and creatives. But, the Sheffield Creative Guild seems to occupy what is a vacant role in our city. It acts as a focus for local creative organisations and individuals. Lara Eggleton chaired the event representing Corridor8, generously sharing her experiences with art writing, writing in collaboration, writing in residence, writing as exploration…….
Sara Jaspan, a writer for print and on-line platforms, delivered a measured and informative presentation; practical advice for writers and artists alike, highlighting how writing can add kudos to practical outputs, but that the ‘function’ of the writing should be decided beforehand by the parties involved; is it for validation or review?
Gabrielle de la Puente [of the White Pube] was pithy and untethered and invigorated the audience. Artists shouldn’t push their own work but rather their own agenda; distinguishing between the ‘stuff’ of art work and the message/intention behind it. Gabrielle was vital and articulate and seemed fearless in her approach to commenting on art and the art world.
Elaine Speight spoke about a recent project, ‘In Certain Places’ which echoed Backlit’s, ‘Same As It Never Was’; revisiting projects and reviewing. Elaine published this [sometimes painful] process as a concrete reminder of collective reflection. The generative nature of Critical writing and the aesthetic value held by written form.
The proliferation of female speakers and artists referenced in the presentations, shouldn’t have felt novel, but it was noticeable – and welcome. \\ .... @backlitgallery @rosecerinthe @ameliaserenroberts @sheffieldguild @corridor8 #backlit#artwriting#backlitwritersresidency#artinnottingham \\
