27/05/18 Atherton Gardens, Fitzroy :: The 20th anniversary of Sorry Day was marked in yesterday’s late afternoon golden light by the unveiling of @rekorennie artwork ‘Remember Me’. The place in which the piece stands is the traditional meeting place for Australia’s indigenous peoples to find or meet up with their families or friends when in Melbourne :: Privilege to be here on the day for @theagephoto and hear some wonderful/funny/harrowing stories by local indigenous identities :: photographs by @cnhop for @theagephoto :: #photojournalism#melbourne#fitzroy#athertongardens#rememberme#art#indigenous#indigenousart#sorry#sorryday#indigenouspride#fujixt2 @polthepainter @cityofyarra @rekorennie
Reko Rennie's artwork "Remember Me" launched yesterday by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Colin Hunter, on the 20th anniversary of National Sorry Day―26 of May Commemorated the Stolen Generation at Atherton Gardens in Fitzroy, an historic Aboriginal gathering place - guest speakers and performances by Deborah Cheetham AO, Kutcha Edwards, Illana Atkinson, Djirri Djirri Dance Group, Jindi Worabak Dancers, Koori Youth Will Shake Spears Dance Group and Uncle Jack Charles.
Today my classmates and I had a jam packed day! We visited the Fitzroy Community Food Centre and Garden at the Atherton Gardens Estate. They are run by Cultivating Community, an organisation that works toward fair, sustainable and resilient food systems. It really made me want to get my own plot of land ASAP. You can only repot your plants at home so many times before they start resenting you, you know? We had lunch at STREAT in Collingwood, a social enterprise helping disadvantaged youths, and ended the day at FareShare garden + kitchen in Abbotsford. FareShare is a food charity that not only provides free meals to people all over Victoria, but also diverts tonnes of food from landfill. MASSIVE day, so if you excuse me Imma just 💻🛌😴
