We're pumped to welcome back ASL instructor Kelly Hosna to Village Play Space for another Sign Language Story Time! 📚✊🏻
With a background in education and expertise from using sign language with her two children, Kelly is ready to share her experiences of ASL with you! This rich and meaningful language can help improve communication in families, from pre-verbal babies through school aged children.
Please mark your calendars and join us on Tuesday 10/30 at 11am for another fall-themed Sign Language Story Time! No reservation is required and admission is included in the normal Play-By-Day rate. Visit our website or FB page for more info (link in profile).
I can’t believe I haven’t taught you this #asignaday yet!!! 💃”DANCE”🕺 Your dominant hand mimics a pair of legs swingin’ around dancin’ side to side above your non-dominant open palm. I’m making the 12 hour pilgrimage down to @hulaweenfl tomorrow so thought I’d show you how to sign #dance as well as “DANCE WITH ME?” that I signed for you at the end!! If you see me there, ask for a dance in #ASL and you shall receive. *song is “LOWWS” by Mushroom People 😋* @mushroom_ppl
Alrighty folks...the post you've all been waiting for... maybe?! .
Did you know that each diaper takes 500 years to decompose??? Yup, that's right... 500. The EPA reports about 20 BILLION diapers are dumped in landfills each year!!!! Insane!! Knowing this, we set out to find a way to be a bit more ecofriendly, but not quite ready to do the only cloth diaper thing. So instead, I bring you this! .
Here is our little nugget sitting on his toilet at 3 months old. We started "Elimination Communication" with #HAM at about 2 weeks old. During all of his diaper-free time we began using cue words "pee pee" and "poo poo" initially everytime he would relieve himself. By 4 weeks old we were holding him over the toilet and giving these cue words when he would go. .
We use the ASL sign for toilet (thumb stuck between 2nd and 3rd fingers in a fist (( "T" )) and twist the wrist back and forth) and say the word "toilet" before taking him to the toilet. Once he got too heavy for us to hover him over the regular toilet, we invested in this little potty. We even took it to Pittsburgh with us on our first flight (it fit in a carry on suitcase!) Now #HAM is big enough where we can perch him on a regular toilet if needed. .
I'm not exaggerating at all when I say I've changed maybe 2 poop diapers in the last 3 months! This nugget always goes in the toilet! We probably catch about 50% of his urination in the toilet too!
It's pretty incredible that this works! There are days he will use only 1 diaper from the time he wakes up until he goes to bed. I love that we are being more ecofriendly and getting this potty-training done early! Swipe to see the book we read and followed to do this "EC" technique☆
This photo is from the day Lorelei got her hearing aids- her hearing birthday. Sept. 7, 2017. 👂I knew I would spend the rest of my life advocating for Lorelei to get what she needs, but I never imagined finding quality education that also uses (forget teaches) ASL would seem near impossible. 📚 She is not "deaf enough" to qualify for a public school deaf ed program, and she is discouraged from using ASL in school (future elementary school- her current class is amazing). I find this ironic, because TN high schoolers can now take ASL as a foreign language credit. 👩🏫
There is no need for all of this! 😣 I'm going to go for a run then eat a ton of chocolate to de-stress. 🍫🍫🍫

It’s my biggest painting ever! I feel proud of this. It’s a concept that aligns with me- communication. As a teacher, I am always talking about effective verbal, facial, visual, and written communication. We communicate SO MUCH MORE than we are aware of. ✨ From left to right this mural uses ASL and writing to express the cornerstones of effective communication: Ask, Understand, Listen, Look. ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s sometimes hard to listen to what seems unsavory, understand what seems absurd, see something that seems wrong, and ask about something you’d rather not know. But. You know. That’s the only way that we can grow. We can’t walk around assuming the worst intent. The world, and people, are more beautiful and forgiving than that. ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am accepting mural Projects for 2019. DM or email me to get your project going. 😊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Brother... Frère (m)... お兄さん (兄) & 弟 (あに/おとうと) [Oniisan/Ani & Otōto]... a lot of asl signs incorporate the boy and girl sign into relatives. It used to be girl same and boy same. Lsf uses initialization. Jsl represents different family members with different fingers 🎥:@geckessence #asl#sl#jsl#lsf#language#signlanguage#languagelearning

Yesterday filled my heart with happiness 💜 saw my Deaf coworkers, teachers, clients, most of all the kids. I was blessed to use my asl skills at the dia de los muertos oakland museum festival. Just to see the eyes of the Deaf kids when id let them touch my regalia, feathers n took many pics with them to see that look of happiness in their eyes really melted my heart. I am for real in love with the Deaf community.

LOOK OUT 🌏! @nationaldisabilitytheatre is coming. I’ve been waiting my whole life for this👂🏼🤖 20% of 🇱🇷 population has a disability. This makes people with disabilities both the largest minority group & also THE LEAST REPRESENTED!
Thank you to Executive Director, @rowemickey for spearheading this incredible movement #TheatreForAll#RepresentTheTwentyPercent . 👕 designed by #deaf designer @tangguhkarya | @neaarts @kennedycenter @rudermanfdn
Stopped to fuel up my patrol car, when the guy at the pump next to me waved. I waved back and he pointed to the Thundercat logo on the side of the car. He said the word fast, but it was difficult to understand, until I saw he had a hearing aid. We used some hand signals to communicate and I thought that was it. Then, as I was getting in my car, he approached me with this card. He watched me practice every single letter. Then he wrote on a piece of paper that his name is Willie and showed me how to spell it, then had me spell my name. He showed me how to sign “nice to meet you,” got in his truck and drove off. Not a bad experience for a Monday!
