One of the most common things we see in newcomers is HOLDING THE BREATH during a posture.
Of course, your focus is on the posture when you first start yoga! Where to put your body is important to avoid injury from misalignment.
BUT let that breath flow! Everything gets a lot easier when you can breathe through the uncomfortable.

Navasana / Boat pose : From a seated position, take your legs forward with the heels to the ground and a deep bend in your knees. Take your hands to the backs of your knees and lean back through the hips / pelvis whilst lifting up through the chest. With the weight slightly back like this, lift the legs up to parallel with the ground and keep holding the knees if necessary (this is modified Navasana and is great to build the core). From here, ensure that there is connection and support through the core; a light lift from the pelvic floor, a drawing in through the outer waist, a drawing in through the navel, and a stable containment through the ribs. With the core supported like this, keep extending through the heart and crown of the head and straighten the legs to ~45 degrees, adding a power to the thighs and hug in of the inner thighs. Reach the arms and hands forward but keep a connection between the upper arms and shoulders. Hold for 10 breaths and when you become very comfortable with this you can play with transition to low boat, or a floating transition to chataranga. Enjoy!

Just like we talked about in Scissors, this #armbalance requires a lot of leg activation and, often times, people think they ‘can’t’ extend anymore... it surely feels that way but practicing it consistently makes a huge difference and, if you take a picture of your Tittibha today, and another in 6 months, you’ll be surprised at how much more extension it’s acquired. Depending on how high/low the hips go, you’ll feel more/less pressure on the wrists too so, adapt it to your needs. Today, I’m proposing the ‘low hips’ one, toes pointing towards the ceiling in a, somewhat vertical, line. The weight of the torso will also force the elbows to straighten and upper back to round. As much as possible, try to roll those shoulders back and open the chest. That way, you’ll also connect more with the core and lower two bandhas. If you can get into this pose, try to play with its mechanics and, once you've done the version photographed, lift the hips, point the legs more horizontally (or even down to the mat), like you were about to press into Handstand. Play also with bending the elbows and do 2-3 push ups for instance, always keeping the heels off the ground. If you can’t rest the hands comfortably, try placing 2 blocks under them and squat as low as possible, bending the elbows and making a ‘shelf’, so you can sit on the upper arms. Once that happens, the second half of the pose is much easier. I’ve seen a lot of practitioners going from not being able to squat/start, to extending/making a beautiful shape so, keep at it, it’s doable!!! More ideas to tackle this coming up tomorrow, hang in there...:)))

After years of poor posture before finding yoga, I’m left with a fear of hunching and some extra sensitivity around the base of my neck — today’s variation allows you to explore the spinal extension of Carmen’s offering, but with your arms/shoulders on the ground for lift + support, and no weight-bearing on the wrists.

Lie down, bend your knees, and plant your feet hips’-width apart in front of your glutes with the sides of your feet parallel. Press into your heels, to lift your hips without tilting your pelvis. (Send your tailbone towards the backs of your knees to avoid overextending the lumbar spine.) Shimmy your outer upper arms closer together behind your back, and either interlace your fingers or grip your ankles, squeezing your shoulderblades together to send chest towards chin + distribute the backbend more evenly along your spine.

Bend one knee into your chest, and either stay here, ensuring you’re pressing down into the standing foot to keep your pelvis lifted, or extend the leg straight up to the sky; make sure your lifted toes are super active, and do both sides of course!

Remember that the “bridge” of the pose is actually the trench between your neck and the earth; there should be no pressure at all on or around your neck.

Shimmy your outer upper arms closer together behind your back, and either interlace your fingers or grip your ankles, squeezing your shoulderblades together to send chest towards chin + distribute the backbend more evenly along your spine. . Bend one knee into your chest, and either stay here, ensuring you’re pressing down into the standing foot to keep your pelvis lifted, or extend the leg straight up to the sky; make sure your lifted toes are super active, and do both sides of course! . Remember that the “bridge” of the pose is actually the trench between your neck and the earth; there should be no pressure at all on or around your neck.

There’s always room to grow and be better and I’ll always aim for growth. But I want to get back to why I started from the very beginning and it was to heal.

Be careful of collecting yoga poses, strive for progress but be okay and kind to yourself where you are. You run the risk of creating a rat race mind and then you miss the point of your practice. The healing. I’m totally guilty of that because I’m super boss/mom/hustler, it’s so okay to do less. Less is more ❤️

I’ll admit that sometimes I’ve been cynical when I’ve heard people talk about love. I’m a sober-minded person. What that means is I often have a bullshit meter that starts to go off when people talk about just sending love and light to the world. These same people are often quite willing to devolve into hate and blame the moment you don’t do something that fits into their definition of love and light.

But love, at least the way I understand love, follows no rules. And actually love breaks all the rules. Love has no bounds. Love is big enough and brave enough to hold what appears to be opposites in its heart.

Sometimes what people call “love” is actually a pretense for judgement and delusion. That’s sad. I know bc I’ve been there myself. I’ve been judgmental and I’ve been judged. I’ve been blinded my own illusions and I’ve been passed over bc people wouldn’t see the truth. But that’s life. I’m not beyond it. Im a human being making utterly human mistakes and choosing to love myself through them. That to me is strength.

In a world that tells you you’re not good enough, the decision to love yourself is a revolution. Be a revolutionary in your own mind.

Today I skipped lunch, went home and took half an hour nap. I came back but left the work early. Then I had another nap back home. It's almost midnight Barcelona time and, two naps later, my body still wants some more sleep. I feel so tired today (heat, humidity, summer in the city, etc) but also so grateful to be able to follow my own feelings, to ask and to listen.
