Why does saying "Guidance Counselor" make a School Counselor cringe? Well, it has to do with the origins of the profession. There was an initial need to help transition students to the factory (vocational teachers). Then came the push towards 👉guiding👈 students toward careers in science and technology...hence the label Guidance Counselors. At this time, the job was done by teachers with maybe a few extra classes focusing on academic guidance only. Fast forward to today, School Counselors focus not only on academics, but the social and emotional well being of students. We are required to have a Masters Degree in our speciality, earn state certifications, and strive to uphold the values and achieve the competencies set forth by the American School Counseling Association. "Guidance" is viewed as an archaic term to us because it does not encompass all of what we do, where as School Counselor represents what we do and where we are headed. We serve a larger purpose than just guiding students towards careers. Hopefully now that you have this info you can help us change the verbage in your school. 💚

What does an Exercise Physiologist do? Had a chat to tennis player Alison Bai at AIS Canberra on 18th August. She had come back from US with an injured hip. We decided she needed to see Dr Bruce Reid in Melbourne. She flew down and also got an MRI, all at her own expense. Surgery was an option but an exercise program was the decision. So together we planned a program and she worked online with me. Got back on court, modified the gym and fitness work. Just a month later satisfying today for alison to win 76 76 vs Olivia Rogowska who has done really well in last few years. She just hit the gym daily and so important to stay conditioned these days in tennis rather than just hit balls. Tough grind and a tough opponent awaits tomorrow for Alison. So enjoy today but need to back up. Day in day out grind and nearly every player foots their own medical expenses. Thats another story! But anyway that’s what Exercise Physiologists can do. Direct athletes to the best advice, follow it and implement a progressive and specific strength and conditioning program #exercisephysiologist#ESSA#ASCA#tennis 🎾 #rehabilitation#sportsspecific#strength
Well done to those whom competed in the Nothern Region last week in Brisbane👏👏👏
Cannot imagine how hard they’ve been working on it, but was a privilege to observe the last minute effort just before the competition.
My turn next!! ブリズベンで行われたASCAの予選に出場する彼らの応援しにいきました。
Based on the last Landmine exercise posts I’ve been asked about how to improve general core strength & stability and how that improves general health & athletic performance.
🏋️♀️WHY Movement? Your ‘core’ is the group of muscles that make up the trunk of your body. These muscles span the lower/upper back, front abdomen, lateral flanks of the trunk and attach to the shoulder and pelvic girdle and most importantly surround the spine.
🏋️♀️WHAT do they do? These muscles all have different very important functions. Basically, they act as a chain that connects and transfers energy through the upper and lower girdle.
🏋️♀️Think of a strong bridge conveying the flow of traffic from one side to the other. If that bridge wasn’t strong and stable it couldn’t allow the flow of traffic (think hips to shoulders), safely (limb, trunk and spinal injury prevention) and able to be resilience & do its job under many difficult conditions such as storms and hurricanes (ie fatigue, multiple direction forces and movement) 🏋️♀️ Again bridges have to be able to safely deal with the multiple stressors that are applied to it much like the core musculature. The core has to be trained to enable it to resist, support & perform in the presence of a multitude of magnitudes, directions, speeds, complexities and forces.
The next weeks posts will outline my simple and effective core strength & stability go to exercises for health & performance, for strength & pain-free movement & for athleticism & power
