In this painting, an extremely self-assured gentleman has had his #portrait made with a sense of grandeur, by his city’s leading portraitist - the Alkmaar painter Caesar van Everdingen.
Van Everdingen worked mainly on commission, and most of his oeuvre consists of portraits and history paintings. He is an exponent of #Dutch Classicism, a school of Dutch painting and architecture of the #GoldenAge , whose subjects and designs are drawn from classical antiquity.
His work and many other Old Masters’ await to be discovered in our #KremerMuseum ! Download yours from #Viveport , #Steam , #Oculus or #Daydream .
This little-known portrait of a man surfaced at an American auction in the spring of 2013. Its comprehensive restoration was completed in 2014, a veritable metamorphosis being achieved by reinstating the painting’s cool, subdued colouring.

Although unsigned, this is unquestionably a work of Jacob van Loo.
A versatile artist, with portraiture, genre pieces and history paintings in his repertoire, van Loo is very little-known today still.
This painting addresses the story of Danaë, the daughter of the king of Argos. An oracle predicted that she would give birth to a murderer, resulting in her father locking her up under the watchful eye of an old nurse.

A little-known artist, Jacob van Loo, worked in Amsterdam, where he produced portraits, genre pieces, as well as history paintings, such as the one presented here.
This canvas revolves around the story of Danaë, the daughter of Acrisius, king of Argos.
In the 1650s, van Loo was regarded as one of the finest painters in the city. In 1660 he fled from Amsterdam following a brawl at an inn. Since he was sentenced to death in absentia, Van Loo settled in Paris, where he was admitted to the Académie. He remained there until his death in 1670.

Throughout the centuries, artists have been fascinated by the dramatic contrasts between the light ignited by fire and the darkness of the night. .
Adam Colonia has been described by the critics to have been a good illustrator of landscapes, animals, fires and moonlight. He took great inspiration from the infamous Egbert van der Poel.

The dramatic light and colour effects produced by flames, particularly at night, have fascinated artists throughout the centuries. Fires were a favourite subject in the 16th Century Flemish art, in Antwerp especially.
Adam Colonia has gained reputation for creating valuable depictions of landscapes, animals and fires. It was Egbert van der Poel, another master in our collection, who was of great inspiration to him.

Created by Jan van Bijlert, this piece depicts St. Mark and belongs to a series of 4 evangelists.
The immense realism with which St Mark’s deeply lined face was painted with (including characteristic details such as the bushy eyebrows) contrasts rather heavily with the unconvincing lion’s head. While a human being of flesh and blood had undoubtedly sat as model, this exotic animal, which looks more like a large dog, bears little relation to reality.

With a piercing gaze and an emphatic pointing finger, St Mark – identifiable by his fixed attribute, the lion – draws our attention to an open book: the gospel written by him.
The canvas here belongs to Jan van Bijlert’s series of 4 evangelists.
Van Bijlert had lived in Italy for several years. Because of this time spent abroad and its influence on his artistic development, he is grouped together with famous names such as Gerrit van Honthorst, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Dirck van Barburen as the Utrecht Caravaggists, although his work also has distinct classicist traits.

This artwork is signed by Pieter Verelst.
While there is little that’s known about the artist, his techniques and themes were certainly versatile, leaving behind a beautiful oeuvre.
Verelst took inspiration from artists such as Adriaen van Ostade, Rembrandt and Gerrit Dou. The latter was undoubtedly the inspiration for the painting shown here: the minute brushwork of the teacher's orange-red velvet beret and his pupil’s cloak, for example, clearly recalls the technique of the Leiden artist.

The author of this canvas is Pieter Verelst.
Intriguingly, there is nothing known about the artist’s training, but many and diverse influences can be found in his oeuvre, which consist of still life, portraits and genre paintings.
He painted peasant interiors in the manner of Adriaen van Ostade, Rembrandt-like history paintings and tronies, and genre scenes reminiscent of Gerrit Dou. This schoolroom scene is an excellent example of the latter.
