"Yes Machine" 2017 by @realtime.reggie @yesresort @svanyc seen at @pulseartfair ✏️#MyArtEscape#borntobebored 👉🏻 Keep Reading... The work responds satirically to an ever increasing boring experienced by modern society; a hole, an emptying, a longing. It is a negotiation of nostalgic and sterile definitions of ‘American-ness’ as they relate to the current socio-political climate. Whether looking backward or forward, Born to be Bored encourages a look around, a look through; a time for reflection on how we as individuals and as a society affect each other and our environments. One artist who’s work I recently came across weeks before heading to #Miami was @ronald_jackson_artworks and was so glad I got to see these in person and briefly meet the artist as we both were working hard at our booths. These works have immense presence kinda like a camouflaged elephant in the room, Blackness, being hidden in plain sight. I liken his work to having masked accepting blackness within this seemingly blissful art world only revealing his true character to those willing to look behind the growth of the surface. This particular image strikes me as the behind the scenes to a #KehindeWiley painting because in Wiley’s work the presence and emotion of the subjects can sometimes get lost within the foliage. Jackson inverts that visual and creates a new representation almost ushering in a coming of age of figurative blackness, where hiding behind or within the environment is no longer an option. These works are ready to reveal themselves and the hidden truth they possess when the masks are removed. Bold, detailed and striking these portraits sit with the viewer as these “masks” transform perceptions. •
