REACTION paintings to original works by Joseph Mallord William Turner
As artists we paint what we know and react to what is, sometimes metaphorically, before us. We are part of a culturally universal pictorial culture of ideas, stories and emotions, told and re-told.
All of my work is a reaction to images that move or inspire me, some are representations, some are more abstract.
These images are ones that are either fleeting in my life experience or have become part of something bigger for me, part of my own psychological and experiential archeology. Like the students who copied the great masters I am always learning from work that has challenged or moved me. These works are not copies but reactions and inter reactions with the original works. They have clear echoes and distortions. Like dreams or distant memories they are familiar and yet they are unfamiliar.
Paul Klee’s was a Swiss born painter, with a unique style that was influenced by expressionism, cubism, surrealism, and orientalism. His written collections of lectures, Writings on Form and Design Theory are considered as important to modern art as Leonardo da Vinci’s written works were to the Renaissance. As a child, Klee was mainly oriented as a musician, having played the violin since he was eight, but in his teen years, he found that art allowed him freedom to explore his style and express his radical ideas. Although Klee is now considered a master of color theory, he spent a long time in his search for his sense of color. At first, Klee drew in black and white, saying he would never be a painter. But as an adult, after a visit to Tunisia, in which he was impressed by the quality of light, he had found his sense of color and began experimenting with his newfound decision to be a painter.
Klee spent much of his adult life teaching at various universities and art schools, including the German Bauhaus School of Art and Düsseldorf Academy. During his tenure at Düsseldorf, he was singled out as a Jew by the Nazi party. The Gestapo searched his home and he was fired from his job. Some of his later works were also seized by the Nazis.
Although the artist was born in Switzerland, he was not born a Swiss citizen. His father was a German national, and citizenship being decided on paternity, Klee was born a German citizen. His request for Swiss citizenship was not granted until six days after his untimely death from undiagnosed scleroderma. Klee’s legacy includes over 9,000 works of art, which have inspired many other painting and musical compositions. In 1938 he was immortalized by Steinway Pianos in their “Paul Klee Series” pianos.

This work is part of a series called ‘New Utopias’ where Aldbridge produces screenprint in colours with silver ink on Somerset paper. The artist enjoys using bold colours where the resulting photograph has a cinematic touch associated with it. ⠀
NO SHIT. -
Manzoni's father, who owned a cannery, is said to have once told his artist son, "Your work is shit." In May 1961, while he was living in Milan, Piero Manzoni produced ninety cans, each numbered on the lid from 001 to 090. A label on each can, printed in Italian, English, French and German, identified the contents as '"Artist's Shit", contents 30gr net freshly preserved, produced and tinned in May 1961.' In December 1961, Manzoni wrote in a letter to the artist Ben Vautier: 'I should like all artists to sell their fingerprints, or else stage competitions to see who can draw the longest line or sell their shit in tins. The fingerprint is the only sign of the personality that can be accepted: if collectors want something intimate, really personal to the artist, there's the artist's own shit, that is really his.
In 1964, Manzoni was said to have sold a can to Alberto Lucia for 30 grams of 18 carat gold. In the same way that Duchamp took an everyday item and turned it into art, Manzoni took his excrement and priced it on par with gold. He attached a value to what would otherwise have no value. The art world obviously assented to this act: Sotheby sold a can in 2007 for €124,000, and on October 16, 2015, tin 54 was sold at Christies for £182,500. The tins were originally to be valued according to their equivalent weight in gold - $37 each in 1961 - with the price fluctuating according to the market. However, these recent sales indicate that Manzoni's cans of shit are outperforming gold 70 times over.
