Throwback to hiking in New Zealand back when I was naive and didn’t realize how hard starting a business would be 🤦🏼♀️

It’s my last day. Beyond sad. ‘Don’t let the darkness eat you up’ by Jose Gonzalez, keeps playing in my head, part of the soundtrack of my trip.
Thank you New Zealand you have been awesome. And sublime, friendly, optimistic, rugged, no-bullshit, relaxed, safe and welcoming to this lone traveller. I hope to see you again some day.
We’ve covered some ground! So over the past week we’ve come from the West coast over to the East coast through Arthur’s pass, we spent a few days climbing mountains and experienced some crazy scenery! We’ve fed little ducklings which look like they’re posing for some sort of album cover.
After leaving Arthur’s pass we made our way to Christchurch to meet more of Ems family, where we stayed a few nights, got shown round the city and the views out over it at night, went to watch a show in the Court theatre 🎭 got pretty wonky playing Viking chess at a bbq and fell in love with even more animals 🙄 spent the day trekking in the pouring rain, down through a stream to find Emily Falls! We’ve now left Christchurch and making our way down to Wanaka for Christmas to meet more family and catch up with my long lost bro, finding walks and waterfalls along the way of course 🤙🏼 #nz#explore#goprohero7black#arthurspass#mountains#animals#lads#bevs#frenchieloving#emilyfalls @emily.y.y__
This past week we’ve gone from one extreme to another🏔
We started off trekking through Arthur’s Pass (during which we found a Simpsons doughnut that Sam is trying his best to look manly in...🙄) which was absolutely insane!! The scenery and landscape was incredible, and although we didn’t quite make it to the top of a mountain, we got half way up 2 of them!💪🏼 - where the views were even better🤩
Then we spent Friday - Monday with my cousin and his little lot in Christchurch, which felt like luxury with a proper shower and bed!!!😍 It was also really interesting and quite saddening to see all of the rebuilding that’s still going on in Christchurch city since the earthquake 6 years ago!!
And today we’ve been and found a lovely little walk in Peel Forrest, so obviously I had to get a photo with Emily Falls!💁🏽♀️
So from here on we’re starting to make our journey down to Wanaka for Christmas with the rest of my NZ family🥰 #newzealand#travelnz#christchurch#arthurspass#halfmountainclimbers @samfinlay123
Experienced both rain and shine in one day. As we were driving towards Arthur’s Pass we could see the rain clouds amidst the mountains, it was pretty incredible. And of course it’s not a road trip without stopping by to see the waterfall (even when it’s pouring down). #arthurspass#waterfall#travel#newzealand#photography
Haven’t got to have a real pavlova on this trip yet but the next best thing (or maybe even better thing??) is this scoop of kiwi pavlova ice cream!! Damn it was good. We should have that in the States.
It’s only day three and we’ve explored a cool city (#christchurch ), hiked around a waterfall (#devilspunchbowl at #arthurspass ), and driven through some of the most beautiful scenery that drastically changes every hour of the drive (snow-capped mountains, rainforest, wildflower fields, rock fields). #NewZealand has been mind blowing but I know we’re gonna have to slow down the pace eventually to keep this going. But neither @theactualandrewbenson or I can believe that this isn’t just another normal vacation so we’ve been ravenously taking it all in! TL;DR it’s been going great and contact me over WhatsApp or social media DMs (I won’t get texts or calls to my regular number for the foreseeable future) 😁
I have just travelled through the misty mountains. By which I mean Arthur’s Pass, through the southern alps from Hokitika to Christchurch. The weather closed in this morning and rained or clouded for most of the way, creating tantalising glimpses of peaks and valleys with the occasional roll back for a stunning view.
On the way I encountered a slightly mad hotel owner with a giant Gollum on his roof, a working Barrel organ in his cafe, and a most excellently ornate Victorian toilet.
There were also amazing caves and rock formations used allegedly in not only LOTR and Hobbit but also the stone slab in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Turns out Narnia and Middle Earth are the same place. Who knew.
I was so sorry to hear what happened to Grace Millane, and that she never got to experience the beautiful Aotearoa that I know and love. I was even more sorry, albeit not surprised, to hear many comments along the lines that she shouldn’t have been travelling alone in the first place.
I will say as loud as I can and for as long as I can that what happened to Grace was NOT HER FAULT, and to any other women (young or old), do not let this stop you from doing what you do. Travelling solo is one of the most life altering experiences you can have and it should not be taken away from you by fear. I have been exactly where Grace was, both literally and figuratively, walking the same streets with no doubt the same big plans for adventure and the future. I will be Grace again too, at another time in another place, and my decision to travel alone will not be to blame for any choice another person may make to harm me.
In conclusion, people should just stop murdering people.
The photos are of some of my favourite solo adventures in New Zealand: the mirky woods of Arthur’s Pass, looking for kiwi on Stewart Island, and solo hiking the Kepler Track.
Today I had a ‘lazy’ day. In the morning we went all the way to the top of the waterfall and did the Arthur’s Pass walk. Which in total was:
- Steps: 13668
- Walking distance: 9.8 km
- Floors: 83
In the afternoon it was raining so I just took it easy, ate some (the whole pack? 🤔) of my Dutch kruidnoten with chocolate 😍
