Selfie with work by one-time friend and roommate Jean-Michel Basquiat. I was a student at NYU majoring art history and we talked a great deal about art, Michael Jackson and jazz. Funny he became such a huge success before and after death. The Kapp Putsch
_________
Pictured First: Putschists flying the Reichskriegflagge, commonly associated with the empire. Pictured Second: Putschists in Berlin. The banner warns: "Stop! Whoever proceeds will be shot"
_________
The Kapp Putsch was an attempted revolution named after its leaders Wolfgang Kapp and Walther von Lüttwitz. Attempted on 13 March 1920 it aimed to undo the German Revolution of 1918–19 and overthrow the Weimar Republic establishing a right-wing autocratic government in its place. The attempted coup took place in Berlin and the legitimate government was forced to flee the city. After a few days had passed, the coup failed when large sections of the German population followed a call by the government to join a general strike. Civil servants refused to cooperate with Kapp as well causing waves of disagreements. Despite the failure, the putsch’s effects were felt all throughout the coming years of Weimar Germany. It was one of the causes of the left-wing Ruhr uprising of March 1920, which the government suppressed by military force, whilst dealing leniently with those behind the putsch.

Black Artist Appreciation post: Toyin Ojih Odutola is a contemporary artist who focuses on the sociopolitical construct of skin color through her multimedia drawings. Her work explores her personal journey of having been born in Nigeria then moving and assimilating into American culture in conservative Alabama. "I’m doing black on black on black, trying to make it as layered as possible in the deepness of the blackness to bring it out. I noticed the pen became this incredible tool. The black ballpoint [pen] ink on blackboard would become copper tone and I was like 'wow, this isn’t even black at all!' The black board was like this balancing platform for the ink to become something else. I instantly recognized this notion, of how we think something is a certain way and in reality it is something else…

Coastal Scene - Théo van Rysselberghe, 1892.
------------------------------------------------
Van Rysselberghe adopted the pointillist style, creating a composition using countless tiny dots of complementary colours, after seeing the work of Georges Seurat. He formed a close friendship with Seurat's follower, Paul Signac, and in the early 1890s produced a series of deceptively simple, light-filled and densely worked seascapes as van Rysselberghe and Signac travelled and painted together.

A distinctive feature of his work is the clusters of white dots sprinkled across the picture surface, as here, which give his paintings an animated, almost dancing quality. The dots also often form swirling decorative patterns, as in this work.

Utagawa Kunisada (Japanese: 歌川 国貞; also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代歌川豊国); 1786 – 12 January 1865) was the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.

At the end of the Edo period (1603–1867),Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi and Kunisada were the three best representatives of the Japanese color woodcut in Edo (capital city of Japan, now Tokyo). Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese: 歌川 広重), also Andō Hiroshige (Japanese: 安藤 広重; 1797 – 12 October 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-artist, considered the last great master of that tradition.

Western artists closely studied Hiroshige's compositions, and some, such as van Gogh, painted copies of Hiroshige’s prints

I would like to credit @ericbiggart for finally unlocking the narrative of this painting by one of my favorite artists: Évariste Carpentier (Belgian, 1845 - 1922). Carpentier‘s works range from luminist landscapes to historical realism and, as in this work, intensely personal genre scenes. After living abroad and with great commercial success in Paris, Carpentier injured his leg, and was told by doctors that, without bed rest, amputation would be necessary. He subsequently spent two years living in his childhood home with his grandmother (far left) and sister (center). Over two years, Carpentier painted over 20 scenes from their upbringing and everyday life together as adults. This is the interior of the family kitchen. The now-grown sister is peeling potatoes as two suitors shyly enter the room; one with a bouquet of flowers and the other returning from a hunt. The house cat and visiting hunting dog — a not so subtle double entendre — fight. Startled by the unexpected guests, the blind grandmother instinctively reaches for the young girl, her caretaker. The painting is a masterful narrative, exploring the ideas of youth, old age, obligations, and opportunity. It is also a tour-de-force of painterly observation. The figures, the still life elements, the colors ... all work together to convincingly draw our eyes across the narrative with curiosity, rather than distraction. You can see it now @anthonysfineart #carpentier #academicpainting #genrepainting #arthistory #belgianpainting #anthonysfineart

Meet Dido Belle (no, not the 90s singer or the Disney character) - Dido Belle was the daughter of an enslaved African woman and a British naval officer. She was later brought to England and raised to be an gentlewoman. After her adoptive parents died, she inherited everything and became independently wealthy. Her story has interested me since I studied her portrait as an art history student ✨ Dido Belle will be available on Smooth Sock and DK in tomorrow’s 5pm EST update.

Fun Fact ➖ The concept of the color blue was invented by the Egyptians around 2,200 B.C. Before this, it is believed that humans were colorblind and could only conceptualize black, white, red and eventually yellow and green 👁

I wasn't too keen on the Lego displays in every room (I kind of hate it when stately homes have this sort of thing going on - don't most of us visit in order to see the old stuff not Lego or hideous modern art displays?!) but I did appreciate the Lego version of the infamous diamond necklace from the Affair of the Necklace. #art #beauty #arthistory #inspiring #beautiful #history #elegance #glamour #royalty #queen #18thcentury #versailles #paris #france #frenchhistory #marieantoinette #lego #chateau

On a recent day this summer, I left the colorful, urban interventions and crowded revelries of Manifesta 12 in Palermo, Sicily, and descended into the rural, arid Belice Valley. Today, 50 years since the earthquake struck, many look back on Carrao’s radical experiment in civic engagement, rehabilitation, and unification as a cautionary tale. But new efforts are now underway to realize a more pragmatic version of that utopian dream.

From the moment of his arrival in Arles, on 8 February 1888, Van Gogh was constantly preoccupied with the representation of "night effects". In April 1888, he wrote to his brother Theo: "I need a starry night with cypresses or maybe above a field of ripe wheat." In June, he confided to the painter Emile Bernard: "But when shall I ever paint the Starry Sky, this painting that keeps haunting me" and, in September, in a letter to his sister, he evoked the same subject: "Often it seems to me night is even more richly coloured than day". During the same month of September, he finally realised his obsessive project.

He first painted a corner of nocturnal sky in Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles (Otterlo, Kröller-Muller). Next came this view of the Rhône in which he marvellously transcribed the colours he perceived in the dark. Blues prevail: Prussian blue, ultramarine and cobalt. The city gas lights glimmer an intense orange and are reflected in the water. The stars sparkle like gemstones.
It was painted at a spot on the bank of the Rhone River that was only a one or two-minute walk from the 'Yellow House' which he was renting at the time.

Van Gogh was pleased with this painting. He mentioned it more than a half a dozen times in his letters. For instance, a sketch of the painting is included in a letter, sent to his friend Eugène Boch on October 2, 1888. He described this composition in another letter to his brother Theo: "Included a small sketch of a 30 square canvas - in short the starry sky painted by night, actually under a gas jet. The sky is aquamarine, the water is royal blue, the ground is mauve. The town is blue and purple. The gas is yellow and the reflections are russet gold descending down to green-bronze. On the aquamarine field of the sky the Great Bear is a sparkling green and pink, whose discreet paleness contrasts with the brutal gold of the gas."

'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' , also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave,  is Hokusai's most famous woodblock print, and one of the best recognized works of Japanese art in the world. It depicts an enormous wave threatening boats off the coast of the prefecture of Kanagawa. While sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is, as the picture's title suggests, more likely to be a large rogue wave. As in all the prints in the series, it depicts the area around Mount Fuji under particular conditions, and the mountain itself appears in the background.

The composition comprises three main elements: the sea whipped up by a storm, three boats and a mountain. It includes the signature in the upper left-hand corner.

The sea dominates the composition as an extending wave about to break. In the moment captured in this image, the wave forms a circle around the center of the design, framing Mount Fuji in the background.
In the scene there are three oshiokuri-bune, fast boats that are used to transport live fish from the Izu and Bōsō peninsulas to the markets of the bay of Edo. .
Detail from Katsushika Hokusai,"The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Japanese title: Kanagawa oki nami-ura)", 1830–1833.
