So here goes, the reason behind this painting is that there’s this Italian way of saying.. “legare al dito”
which is often said to express that someone holds grudges and is bitter of what has been said/ done. It does not include ill-will, simply not forgetting and not letting go. When said, it means that the person takes things in a bad way. The literal translation of it is “tying to one’s finger”
Though it is usually related to other people and used simply to indicate a bad character one might have, I personally saw it as a personal burden.
I also found it interesting that there are other legends and myths; like “the red thread of fate” tied to people’s fingers that ‘may stretch or tangle but will never break’, or when we seal something with a pinky promise by binding our little fingers as if we’re tying something.. isn’t it fascinating how they all have this one thing in common; that what we tie to our fingers become part of us and we bring them everywhere we go.
Good or bad, uplifting or heavy.. in a way they kind of take away our freedom
or at least, that’s how it made me feel.
Just imagine. When you’re all tied up, you are more limited, and you simply can’t move on easily. Now what you tied might not even be related to other people, it can be regarding ourselves, our wrongs, mistakes and imperfections.. things we have not yet accepted.
And I guess when I heard the expression “legarselo al dito”, I didn’t see a bad person nor a bad character.. I pictured it more as a suffering. And through this painting I guess I just wanted to pour out the heaviness that I found lying behind that term
oh and yeah, I used my own hand as reference. And the video is a time lapse from my live movie session on ig :) ehe enjoy!!
2/2: There’s actually a deep reflection behind this painting. It popped up in my head when i was listening to some friends and it just lingered there for weeks. (Will be explained in the next post!!)
And i’m pretty happy not because it turned out nice, but because it’s my first time actually painting a concept i have without an occasion (last time i painted something out of a concept i had was for a school assignment)
Feeling a lot can be difficult, they told me to find a way to channel it.
It might not work for everybody, but writing things down (in a journal, or even just as a short note/quote) may help just that bit, enough to not let it become a painful burden ✨
Long time no post as I was doing this adorable commission! Gonna start some new art soon.
Materials: Faber-Castell polychromos, Derwent pastels, Prismacolors and Strathmore toned tan.
Time: roughly 20 hours.
Recently, I completed this 3ft×2ft oil painting for Peace With Christ Christian School for their 25th anniversary. The school mascot is a bald eagle and I drew my inspiration from Isaiah 40:29-31. I gave it the name "Soar". Slide right to see some close-ups!
