💥 No I’m not talking about the new hip term “feels” so don’t get it twisted lol. These videos popped up on my timehop from a year ago today so I thought it would be appropriate to share as well as making a pretty solid point out of “why” I was doing this drill.⁣
⁣
💥 In the first two videos you can clearly see me not putting any emphasis into my lower body mechanics. The main purpose for me doing this was to play around with some upper body mechanics. On that point I do think it’s very important for you as a pitcher to play around with certain things.. who knows maybe something unusually strange could totally click for you.. this drill in the first two videos didn’t really stick for me if i’m being honest. But, we can totally check that off the box now lol.⁣

💥 Breaking down the “why” behind this drill is simply to make an effort to match up my glove arm to my throwing arm. If you look at the most efficient pitchers of all time you’ll notice a correlation to both arms acting as equal opposites. For me i’ve always had a long glove arm with a “short” throwing arm. Again, I was just playing around with this at the time to see if I could potentially benefit from matching my arms more efficiently.⁣

💥 Overall my biggest point of this post is you need to be super INTENTIONAL about your throwing. What i mean by that is every time you touch a ball there needs to be a purpose. You need to start creating some feel in the mechanics. Having an answer to a coach that asks you “What did you feel there?” will put you in an advanced category as well.⁣

🥎 The Prone 1 Arm Trap Raise is a great arm care exercise for the lower trap. The lower trap upwardly rotates the scapula when we go overhead to throw.👇🏼

☘️The execution and technique on this exercise is very important. We want a neutral head position, the neck shouldn’t be over the table.

🏋🏽‍♀️Also, this is a scapulathoracic movement. We want to move the shoulder blade on the rib cage; we want to avoid moving just the humerus without properly positioning the scapula first.👇🏼

⚾️I’ll put my hand underneath the front of the shoulder and cue athletes to “create space for my hand” to make sure they are properly moving the scapula. Josh does a good job of creating that space before his hand goes out like a ‘Y’.

💥The line of pull of the lower trap is 135 degrees so we want to go out like a Y to target the muscle group. Also, I don’t like to go beyond 2.5lbs for this exercise because it leads to compensation with bigger muscle groups, usually the lat. -

The off season is the time that if you’re going to make changes or adjustments in your the delivery, it should start in late October or early November. Basically having the whole winter months working meticulously, detailing, feeling (sensory work) and rewiring your brain to adapt to this new way of moving down the slope. Focusing on new movements requires hundreds if not thousands of repetitions so, they can transition into being second nature when competing on the mound during the spring and the rest of the season. I've been talking about Box Jumps and Jump Training a lot lately. Part of the reason for that is that is one of the most commonly misunderstood exercises. -
Here's a little demo I put together of what I commonly see, and what it should look like!

I often use the cue, “See the jump, not hear the jump.” What that means, is that gravity is helping on the way down, so don’t worry about slamming your feet down.

You can look up on YouTube thousands of videos of very high box jumps. But if you look closely, are they actually jumping high? Or are they very mobile from the hips and able to pull there knees up higher?

1. Make sure you are landing in the same position you took off from. 
2. Your hips should remain higher than your knees when you land on the box. 
3. Don't Stomp. Be as quiet at landing as you can.

Huge night for Sean! •Starting to get a better sense of working a bit more on that slight back side stack in order to let that front side hip get going. This will allowing his upper half to stahl back just a smidge longer and work a more controlled upper half. Slight hip check at that balanced position will trigger that left hip to lead the way and stay closed as he works down the mound towards home plate . In return creating better hip to shoulder separation, increasing velo and improving his accuracy and location around the zone. •Adjusted Sean’s leg kick as well tonight. Instead of sweeping that left leg out (causing Sean to be off balance and tilt back on his right heal) we worked his kick a bit more straight up to improve his posture and control.

Rapsodo with Sliders. From left to right: Spin efficiency, spin axis, #of pitches, horizontal break, vertical break. Sliders tend to trend 745-9 on the spin axis. The closer to 9, the more gyro effect which makes the pitch “hang/back up” before it bites. 
As you get your fingernails around the ball and towards the target, you create an axis closer to 730-845. Both can be used for tunneling. 9 o’clock has less spin efficiency, more gyro, later cut, and horizontal movement will take over and vertical movement disappears.  As you progress down in the 8’s, efficiency and vertical break will increase.  Negative numbers on horizontal/vertical readings are good. The more negative, the more break. 
You can teach one grip, and have various movements once the pitcher understands how to manipulate the ball/fingers/wrist. Curves have higher efficiency than sliders, less horizontal and more vertical break. 
True curves are hard to come by. 6 o’clock is perfect. 7’s are normal. Lefties reverse the clock. 3-430 for sliders, 430-6 for curves.

Teaching youth athletes the difference between “static” stability and “dynamic” stability is a concept I learned from Functional Stability Training by @mikereinold and @ericcressey.

The concept is what is providing the stability at a joint? Super simple way to think about it is it the muscles or the joint itself.

At the elbow this would be all the muscles that cross that joint or the ligaments, bones, and capsule that make up the elbow.

Many youth athletes have joints that lean towards the “looser” side of the spectrum. This can lead to many issues when it comes to potential injuries.

This athlete is returning from an elbow injury.

The purpose of this drill is to reintroduce stress at the elbow and teach the athlete to use their shoulder and elbow “dynamic” stabilizers or muscles.

I call it micro-doses of valgus stress. This is a precursor to his return to throwing program.

Try it out for any and all athletes who need to learn to use their muscles to provide stability at the shoulder or elbow joints.

Push ups are a mainstay in all of our programs, but if you’re good at them they can get too easy and or boring pretty quickly. 🥈The GOAL 🥅 of this exercise is to allow the athlete to re-learn a motor pattern. The athlete should begin with the bar at shoulder height. As the athlete presses the bar up over head, they are also lightly pressing/sliding the bar up the rack . By sliding the bar up the rack, the athlete🤾‍♂️ is guided through the proper movement pattern for overhead pressing.

You absolutely want to maximize rotational force in your delivery, but there’s also no denying the benefits and importance of bracing up well with your front side. That’s why today I’ve come to prefer the cue “control your glove.” The idea is you want to be athletic and active with that glove arm (not stiff), but control your glove and bring that lead elbow right down to your side as you rotate and throw. Data on rapsodo.  Players ask how to get more sink on their pitch. The important thing to read and differentiate when determining sink is the difference in h/v break between your four seam and two seam pitches. Oftentimes you may find your four seem has more h-break than your two. On the two seams, notice the difference the two pitches have. The four seam has a positive v break that is 4-7 inches greater than the two seam. That’s one way to interpret the sink you are getting when looking at tunneling a four seam/two seam in the same location. This principle can be applied with all other pitches as well.

I don’t just stop at proper mechanics. Because just like the weight room, you can’t teach proper technique, if the body isn’t prepared.

I assess on several levels each time an athlete comes in. The eye test is an easy way to check in and see how an athlete is doing. As this athlete was warming up, I noticed his right shoulder blade poking out under his shirt.

When he finished I asked him to grab his dad and explained what I thought I saw and asked if I could take a picture for this post.

This posture is becoming more and more common for athletes. It is due to several factors but the biggest for this athlete is the looseness of his shoulders.

It is a huge advantage for him, it allows him to achieve the motion of throwing, he has very good mechanics. But due to that looseness, he tends to hang out in this rolled forward shoulder positioning.

Over time this could put more stress on his arm. Especially as he begins to throw more and throw harder.

So he won’t just throw when he comes in. He will also have some simple drills to teach him proper shoulder positioning and strengthen some of the muscles of the upper back. -

💥 If you haven’t noticed my last few throwing posts have all been done without even throwing a baseball. The main emphasis of this post will be to reiterate the importance of “feeling” your body through time n space throughout your delivery. Coming up with ways to get in tune with your body during different positions that your body is put in.⁣
⁣
💥 I’ve always believe that if I can throw against a very stiff front leg then I can essentially catapult my body into a higher power output forward. This drill (for me) gives me a feeling of what that leg should be doing. You can also feel that energy transfer from the back side (back hip). Be sure to not lunge with your head forward like I did lol. ⁣
⁣
💥 If you don’t know what your body is doing throughout the delivery then how are you going to repeat that delivery when the lights are on and the stadium is packed. ⁣

I saw this video posted by @drivelinebaseball yesterday and wanted to share it with you guys. Very cool analysis of the throwing motion.

From the video, you may notice the excessive amount of stress placed on the arm (RED) particularly in two areas:

1. EXTERNAL ROTATION:

Increased external rotation is correlated with increased throwing velocity. Improving this range of motion is helpful for adding a few mph on the radar gun. However its important to note that this added external rotation comes with a price... the possibility of anterior shoulder instability and a loss of internal rotation.

Due to anterior instability, many throwing related shoulder and elbow injuries occur during the late cocking phase of throwing.

2. MEDIAL ELBOW (VALGUS STRESS)

You also may notice the excessive amount of valgus forces placed on the medial elbow. This medial stress can be problematic for some resulting in many of the common UCL (Tommy John) injuries we see.

THE ROLE OF STRESS

These specific stresses can cause problematic range-of-motion adaptations however... For the properly trained athlete, stress is a benefit. It creates tissue adaptations that allow for enhanced throwing performance.

Here we have a great visual that shows shortening of the levator scapulae. This is the same action that takes place when we cue someone to “look at the ceiling” during the lift. By shortening this muscle we elevate the scapulae, but more importantly we force downward rotation of the scapula (the inferior boarder gets closer to the spine). Remember we need upward rotation, especially in the pitching population that tends to lose upward rotation during long seasons.

If we need clients or athletes to go overhead effectively and efficiently we need good length in the levator scapulae.

This is another simple example when good intentions can actually counteract the positive strides we’ve made toward our goal. For many of my athletes one of those goals is to get overhead but getting good upward rotation.

Always give thought to coaching cues, and if it helps/hurts or is it just something you’re saying because you’ve always said it.

What an incredible week sharing every facet of the game with Brian Bowles former big league pitcher with the Toronto and his staff. It rained two of the four days, but it allowed us to pull out the PowerPoint presentation to teach the intricacies of Pitching. We obviously covered the delivery and the sensory equipment we use to convey feel of the checkpoints from beginning to end. Brian is captured doing the delivery as he felt the movements he can now precisely convey to his pitchers. Pitch like an athlete and see how easy I can throw with high end velocity is our motto.
