Last night, Grandad told me a story about my Great-Grandma. She was a single woman living in Oracle, AZ who operated her own boarding house during the height of the gold rush; but all the miners in Oracle had a problem. Anyone who tried traveling to Tucson to trade their gold would be robbed by highway men. So, my Great-Grandma devised a plan in her boarding house where the miners could hide their gold underneath the buckboards of her wagon. She would then ride into Tucson and trade their gold for them at the same time she bought supplies for her business. She did that for many years and was never robbed once. Grandad said his point was that we come from a long line of fierce females who don’t take shit from anyone and who always stand up for what’s right. I’m proud of my family heritage and I hope that we’ll always stick up and look out for each other. And like Grandad says, don’t you ever take shit from anyone. 📸: @angie_blanchard

Always a cool place to stop while in Williams to have a few drinks! 🥃🍺
Fun Facts: Opened in 1912 - Used to be a saloon, billiards hall and silent movie theatre - The Sultana claims to have the longest operating liquor license in the state of Arizona - And I maaaay have had a very bad hangover the day after visiting here on our honeymoon back in March. 🙈

@houseoftricksaz in Tempe has the most beautiful attention to detail with an unmatched food quality. Our media dinner included the best pork chop I’ve ever had in my life! First course was a pecan house-smoked salmon with avocado purée, lemon aioli and olive tapenade. Second course was a fab pea and cous cous salad with lemon-mint vinaigrette. Main courses were - pan seared sea bass, spiced duck breast or buttermilk brined pork chop. Dessert was a sinful lemon pie gelato. You’ll love the food as much as the ambiance and decor.

Old friendships were rekindled and new friendships were forged in the Arizona desert that once represented the worst constitutional violation of civil liberties in our country’s history. Hundreds of pilgrims — including former detainees and their family members, as well as others interested in learning more about the World War II incarceration — assembled in Parker, Ariz., on April 7 at the Poston Pilgrimage’s “Upholding Our Legacy, Generation by Generation” gathering, hosted by the Poston Community Alliance, for a day of reflection and remembrance.

I was looking around our area on Google Maps in search of a Sunday adventure picnic spot. A little pond stood out that was far enough in the boonies that it would feel like a real excursion, and as I was trying to find a way to get there, an out-of-place shape caught my eye. A small speck that looked possibly squarish? Like a roof? And a faint line interrupted by clumps of bushes leading up to this oddity out in the middle of nowhere appeared to be an over grown path. This was all a mystery blur in satellite view, so we packed the family in the ranger to investigate in person. Most of the way was non-traversable except by foot or horseback, but we pressed through, anyway. After hitching/dragging a giant fallen tree out of the way, driving through narrow passes of scrub oak, water holes, cobbly arroyos, and then hiking on foot for about a mile, there it was - a little old house, abandoned but not empty. We looked around in hushed tones, marveled at the old trinkets, bottles, rusted bed frames and utensils... and then left it just the way we found it. It was such a neat discovery. We even got spooked out by some freshly traced words written in the dirt (a large arrow, the letter "s" and the word "Hi"...all written about 1/4 mile apart from each other down a rough path leading away from the house). With no tire tracks except for our own, footprints, or horse/hoof prints in sight, and no way for any vehicles to get back there, we were perplexed. What in the world? 😳🙃🤔 Beautiful, intriguing, exciting, a little spooky -- and nobody even shot at us or anything. A perfectly satisfying adventure!

Lemon grass and Tucson stone: Lemon grass can be an easy plant to grow here in Tucson if done correctly. They need a specific microclimate to grow their best. In this case, that means summer afternoon shade and some winter protection.
I mainly use the stalks in soups and I make tea from the leaves. Also, it is great to use the leaves as a natural mosquito repellent while working in the garden!
If planted correctly in a guild, it can be used for evapotranspiration effects, living mulch and shade for other plants below. Once established it dies back in the winter and springs up when temperatures begin to increase.
What about the cool rock man???
Tucson originally got its name from the Tohono O’odham tribe that were known as the farmers of the desert. They farmed the area around the Santa Cruz River flood irrigated plains below Sentinial Peak aka “A” Mountain. From my understanding, the native word that refers to the farming area just below the basalt covered mountains was called Cuk Son. This description later became understood by non native settlers and the pronunciation changed over time to Tucson.
I got these rocks from my grandparents property. My grandfather salvaged a lot of building materials back in the 1950’s. These rocks were used as the foundation of houses built around a once smaller version of the U of A in the early 1900’s. Once the university decided to expand its campus, many homes were demolished and my grandpa salvaged a lot of building materials including this basalt stone that was once harvested from “A” mountain.

Yesterday was #nationalbuffalosoldiersday and the #nationalparkservice story was all about how #buffalosoldiers served their country and fostered a sense of community, wherever they were. Lewis Harris was a member of the 10th Cavalry, stationed in Bonita Canyon, in what is now #chiricahuanationalmonument and his military career spanned the Civil War, the Indian Wars in Arizona, and the Spanish American War. While Harris was at Bonita Canyon, he carved his name in stone and added it to a monument the men made to #presidentgarfield Now the stone is part of the fireplace at Faraway Ranch. #history #explore #findyourpark #arizonahistory #arizona #veteran Find out more about Lewis Harris and other Buffalo Soldiers who lived in Bonita Canyon, by visiting https://www.nps.gov/chir/learn/historyculture/camp-bonita.htm

A while back, I rode out to Safford, AZ, by way of Fort Grant and tiny Bonita. I found out later that it was at this store, that William Bonney, aka Billy the Kid, killed his first man. He was captured and incarcerated at Fort Grant. A short time later, he escaped and moved to New Mexico.

If you plan to #visit_arizona it would be well worth getting a clearance to visit the #buffalosoldiersmuseum in Fort Huachuca, AZ. It still is an actice military base, so you need a clearance that takes a few days.

San Xavier del Bac Mission was founded in 1692 by Father Kino as a Catholic Mission Church. It’s located on the Tohono O’odham Nation San Xavier Indian Reservation south of Tucson, Arizona. .

TEMPE || Not normally what I post, but I’ve heard that pieces of the rubber of the Tempe dam are being sold now since the dam was deemed not conducive to Arizona’s climate. The dam burst back in 2010 was replaced by a concrete dam that was completed in 2016. Here’s me next to the rubber dam in 1998-1999 when it was new!!! #tempetownlake #tempehistorymuseum #tempeaz #abc15 #azfamily #az_gram #az12news #history #valleyofthesunaz_skywatch #valleyofthesun #arizonahistory #historical #desertlandscapes #saltriverarizona #southwestlife
