Hmmmm... doing some #interest #archivalresearch 🤔(TW MISOGYNY Lgbt slurs censored) "who fuckn cares who she is the real question is would u fuck her I would" is my personal favorite... but let's be real this isn't boxxy. #queenboxxy #conspiracies #4chan #2000swebculture #boxxyfan Sidenote: that's not her areola it's a shadow.
Sorry for the lack of posts! My home office was chaotic due to a sudden urge to redecorate. Today’s gem #fromthearchives is a note that reads: “Misc notes for future book—Read these if you want but it may be boring. Save everything for me.” This inconspicuous scribble was in a collection I went through while doing research for my upcoming book. The author of the note—a woman by the name of Laura Miner—was in the middle of a prison sentence for performing illegal abortions when she sent her typewritten notes away for safekeeping. Miner’s pages detailed her everyday life in prison, musings, and the 51-year-old woman’s personal reflections. This little scribble declared her intent to write a memoir upon her release from California’s Tehachapi women’s prison. However, for unknown reasons, she never completed it. Miner was released on parole in December 1950, and she never went back to the abortion business (even though she had been practicing for well over a decade). #historian #phd #academia #historyphd #historyprofessor #archives #archivalresearch #history #womenshistory

This week we are featuring posts by @mariahrvy as part of our #hoartsummerseries:

On Day 6, after spending the morning in the Archivio di Stato in Ascoli, we were allowed to spend a few hours in the communal archive in Amandola. After the earthquake, the town focused on protecting the documents rather than housing them in spaces dedicated for study and so, here we are, crouching in a corridor with medieval manuscripts on a bench!

We went back to the archive on Day 4, and then hit the city centre in Ascoli for some well-needed lunch, coffee and a visit to Sant’Agostino, the Cathedral and San Francesco.

This week we are featuring posts by @mariahrvy as part of our #hoartsummerseries:

On Day 3, we went to the Archivio di Stato in Ascoli Piceno to look at notarial documents (contracts, donations and wills). We got to discover the existence of now lost chapels, altars, burials and works of art!

Archives are difficult to use – sometimes the condition of these books makes it almost impossible to consult them. Registry number 288 is almost completely destroyed by mold, while 12 is a pretty typical example of medieval writing.

Professor Rosanna Maule’s fall PhD research seminar “Women and Archival Film Practices” will address the way in which film historiographies of archival practices by women have been overlooked since the emergence of moving image media. As Cari Beauchamp writes in Indiewire, “Lois Weber was the most successful of all the women directors in the first quarter of the 20th century and, at the time, was placed alongside the likes of D.W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille as the major innovative forces in filmmaking.” .

Sunrise from yesterday morning. I was up early to travel down to Jackson and search the archives there. I found some things that were helpful and didn’t find things that I’d hoped to find. But that’s how archival research goes. So far I’ve talked to people in Denmark, Canada, New York and Boston on my search for information about Hubert. Don’t think one life doesn’t have an impact. It does. It really does. #documentaryfilm #hubertcreekmore #hubertcreekmorefilm #womenmakingdocumentaries #archivalresearch #filmlife #filmmaker

Curators Nermina Žildžo and Tatjana Alvadj explored the new emerging visual identity of the country during the first democratic elections of 1990, showing also Milomir Kovačević’s photographs taken during the elections campaign. #kumainternational #exhibitions #archivalresearch #curators #education #heritage #photography #nationalgallery #sarajevo #bosniaandherzegovina @milomirkovacevicstrasni

Retracing those #africanroots #africanancestry out here in the #africandiaspora can be quite a challenge, especially when all the #griots are gone and the #archival resources in your homeland are thin and your African #ancestors straddled at least 3 continents. I have always expressed the view that through #ethnobotany I would find my roots.
This has impacted upon a lot of my #travel decisions as I try to tap in to the #archivalresearch opportunities and the #oraltraditions in other countries.

But social media is also a useful #research #tool.

I am trying to find any #descendants out there of #cyrilcongo #margaretbritton #jamescollinspemberton #mabelblondell #rhynerrichards #richardjack #jackrichards #enahoward #Gwendolyngrannum #marthastewart #sarahbedeau #patrickbritton #elsiepemberton #ivanbritton #enamoses #Gertrudesimon #marypemberton Please feel free to contact me. Let us compare notes and see where our information intersects.
I have learned of so many traumatic situations where people were close family and did not even realize it. It is good to know your family members.

Etonnants voyageurs! quelles nobles histoires

If you’re looking for a #ZSRSummer reading spot with a/c and a bit of a Hogwarts vibe, we recommend the ZSR Special Collections & Archives reading room on Reynolds 6. The room was originally designed to house the Charles Lee Smith library; then it was the Rare Books room for many years. Now it serves as the main research, reference, and exhibit space for all of Special Collections & Archives. We’re open for quiet study Monday through Friday, 10-4 during the summer and 9-5 during the academic year. #zsrspecial #zsrlibrary #specialcollections #archivalresearch #libraryhistory #readingspot

• My PhD project is a novel set in 1954 Melbourne. Clair, the novel's protagonist, is based on real life Australian artist #JoyHester. I've been immersing myself in her art, writing, letters and biographies about her life trying to get to know her as best I can. •

#DearSun is a collection of correspondence between Joy Hester and #SundayReed, and has offered so many insights into both of these incredible women. It's truly a gold mine.

In the late 60s at @museumdirectors' annual meeting, the topic of security was one of the central focuses. Protests and occupations were occuring all over the country in response to the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. This is a section of a poster that was created in a meeting in which the Directors discussed if and how their institutions had changed in terms of security because of civil unrest or otherwise. Working in the archives I get to see everyone's past predections about the future of Museums, what they should be and how they'll function. Looking through the Office of the Director records is one of my favorite parts of my job because I've learned the evolution of Museum Directors' roles institutionally and what the public perceives as the Director's responsibilities. The role of a Museum Director has greatly changed since the early 20th century, from the highest administrator who was often in the weeds to a someone who is supposed to be a fearless leader and change maker. However the public perception of the power of one person to make complete and sweeping institutional change has always remained a constant. I'm not really going anywhere with this, but I wanted to say that this poster is both hilarious, offensive, detrimental, and disturbing. Come look at it yourself and read the notes from the meeting! Many Museum Directors' surveyed did not want their responses to be known. Museum history is our history, and it is open for anyone to do the work and learn the actual historical workings of institutions, get the facts and not rely on historical tropes. #heretohelpyougetthereceipts #bkmarchives #historicalreceipts #backitup #backbackbackitup #withsomefacts #facts #research #dothework #workthatarchivalresearch #archivalresearch #slowmotionforme #hippyinvasion #tomorrowismybirthday #deeplyconcerned

We have released our second episode of the podcast, Archiving AK. (A link to our podcast is available under the linktree in our profile.) In the second episode of Archiving AK, archivists Gwen and Veronica interview researcher Pierce Bateman. Pierce has been visiting the Archives as a researcher since 2015: first as an undergraduate student, and more recently as a graduate student writing his thesis. In the episode, they discuss Pierce’s background, current research topic, his general interests, and the various aspects of researching in archives from a researcher’s point of view. While this is our second podcast, it was the first one we recorded, and before we had our recording equipment, which is why we are sitting a cellphone.

While this is our second podcast, it was the first one we recorded, and before we had our recording equipment, which is why we are sitting a cellphone. https://soundcloud.com/user-65161682/archiving-ak-episode-2-interview-with-pierce-bateman #archivesofinstagram  #archivingak  #librariesofinstagram  #podcasts  #archivespodcasts  #alaska  #researchers  #archivalresearch
GENEALOGY & LIBRARIES: Our Main Library has reopened and recently rededicated. The #library is a main hub for anyone interested or doing genealogy. Most libraries have a wealth of archives information FREE and immediately accessible to one's quest for ancestors. Contact the local library (public, private or university/college in the area of a family line you're researching. Ask if there is an archives department or museum department(some libraries are connected with local museums), and inquire if there is a genealogy association, club or group that would be willing to do local research for you-join their organization or donate. Please: donate, support or become a member of your local public library-every dollar keeps their doors open. Thank you! 🤗 #publiclibraries #genealogy #libraryarchives #archivalresearch #supportpubliclibraries

From archival research to the Archive: I’m collaborating with @daaangalex on ice cream cocktails for the Archive, @idabstable’s new Saturday night only speakeasy bar. Make a reservation and enjoy some seriously awesome craft cocktails! This one from last night used “Lithuania,” apple cucumber sherbet with buckwheat honey and poppy seeds. 🍹🍏🍦🥒🍯

Some highlights from my first day at Artexte. I’m thrilled to be in Montreal for the next ten days as researcher-in-residence for #KAPSULA and @artexte ’s Cite on Site archival research residency.
1. Artexte’s incredible collection & space
2. Collection of periodicals curated by Michael Blum for his current exhibition L’underground à la loupe
3. FIREWEED Feminist Literary & Cultural Journal
4. & 5. Powerhouse feminist artist-run center materials
6. “Reading Performance: An Annotated Bibliography in Real Time”
7. Art + Society reference books (2012 - )
8. & 9. “Constellation & Correspondences: Networking Between Artists 1970-1980” project initiated by Felicity Tayler
10. Dishevelled researcher
My project imagines the bibliography as a rhizome through the use of digital mapping tools. Expanding my doctoral work on performances of solidarity and activism in Guatemala, the project focuses on visualizing networks of solidarity in Canadian aesthetic practices.

@thereb_14 was awarded a travel grant to Lithuania to explore our family history during her spring break. So after digging through the archives at @dukeuniversity, Rebecca flew to Vilnius to check out their archives. Of course, I forced her to eat and photograph ice cream for me. This stunning shot is of vanilla fig ice cream and mango sea buckthorn sorbet from @icedunes 😱🍦
Who else has Vilnius on their travel list now?!

26 years ago the Los Angeles rebellion began on this day, 04/29/1992, after the officers involved in the Rodney King beating were acquitted. Last year, I worked on a film for SHOWTIME, titled “Burn Motherf*cker, Burn!” A film which explores the roots of civil unrest in California and the relationship between African Americans and LAPD. Check the Showtime website if you’re interested in checking it out! #archivalresearch #archivalproducer #rodneyking #larebellion #lariots

We had one day to comb through six archival boxes at the @rubensteinlibrary. There were letters from my grandfather to his mother, brother, and father during WWII and letters addressed to my grandmother, mom, and uncle during Vietnam. There were photographs, diaries, and a rejection letter from the FBI. We learned that my great-grandfather asked his son for loans on multiple occasions, that great-uncle most likely didn’t die at age 16 from cancer like we had been told, that my uncle believed he could build a soldering iron with a pencil, that my grandfather chastised his brother’s spelling and had many, many enduring nicknames for my grandmother. Of course, my favorite part was reading all my grandfather’s insights about food during the war, whether he was feeling blessed for receiving fresh tomatoes, or seeing his fellow soldiers realize the dire conditions Europeans civilians were in and how sharing army C-rations made all the difference in their lives. My grandfather even mentioned ice cream a couple times. I grew up repeatedly hearing the same couple of war stories that my grandfather had curated to make a point. It was an eye-opening experience to read about experiences we had never heard about before. It is clear that my grandfather strove to be the best student, son, brother, and father, but it seems like he hid parts of his real self. Still, having the opportunity to spend time with my grandfather’s papers made me feel much closer to him and my family. 📦📚

My grandfather, Harry, was also a history major and his stories of the wars and his travels were part of my reason for getting involved in the same subject. That being said, Rebecca, myself, and our parents were shocked to learn that there was a multi-box collection of my grandfather’s personal papers at the Rubenstein Library at Duke University in North Carolina, which includes information that we never had heard before. After many back and forth emails we learned that these personal papers had been sold at my grandfather’s estate sale to a private bookseller. (We are still unsure how we weren’t notified about the extensive collection). Even weirder, is that the bookseller is selling correspondence between my great-grandfather and great-grandmother for $3,000. The majority of the collection was sold to a Duke in 2016. My family was intrigued and unnerved, so we planned a trip. We started with my great-grandparents’ correspondence, which was interesting, but not enlightening. Here are a couple interesting bits: a menu from financial-industry awards dinner and a grocery list written on an envelope from a letter addressed to my great-grandmother. 📮

#WCW goes to my cousin, @thereb_14. Rebecca started digging into our family history last fall and discovered archives with information my family had never heard of. By Thanksgiving, we were spitting into plastic tubs to see what our DNA could tell us and in March we ended up sorting through our grandfather’s papers at Duke University’s Rubenstein Library. For the rest of the week I’ll be posting about what we learned and an ice cream inspired by Rebecca’s research trip to Lithuania. 📚🗃
p.s. Rebecca is one of my biggest food/ice cream inspirations 👯‍♀️
