Here’s an interesting tip that will give a really nice boost to the realism of your foliage in your scene.
Whether you’re going full 3D or full postprocessing, the transition between your trees and the ground (grass or soil or whatever) plays a huge deal in the overall realism of your image. Although it can sometimes make sense to have a perfectly sharp transition (well tended garden), most of the time you want to incorporate some imperfections.
There are three workflows for this, choose the one that suits your present workflow best :
1. Grass and trees are modelled and rendered. In that case scatter the grass without taking into account the placement of the trees, place your trees how you want them. Render. Go to step 4.
2. Grass is modeled and trees are cutouts placed in post. In that case scatter the grass as usual with some randomization. Render. Place your trees as you would normally. Go to step 4.
3. Grass is added in post from different photographs and trees are placed with cutouts. In that case simply process as you would normally and then add a final touch by following step 4.
4. Photoshop the transition between the grass (or soil, or whatever ground you have) and your trees by using an actual photo of a tree base (that matches the species of your tree ideally, although you can even just use the shape and fill it with the trunk you have with a clone
stamp tool). That way you get realistic roots and a realistic soil/grass transition. Don’t forget to match the usual hue/sat/value of the grass and your trunk as well.
With this simple extra step, you’ll see your vegetation will look a whole lot more realistic in a second!

Throwback, in design as in life, not everyone will appreciate who you are or what you do. Sometimes it’s much less who and why but when. Sometimes it’s just not the right time and place even though you or your design is awesome. Here our take on how bricks could become light and sexy.
Ordnance Datum. Since 1915, Great Britain. // A vertical datum used by an ordnance survey as the basis for describing altitude on maps. A spot height may be described as AOD “above ordnance datum”. Usually MSL “mean sea level” is used for the datum. It is measured in Newlyn, Cornwall.
