The Cathedral of our Lady, an architectural masterpiece that was 170 years in the making. This part of the cathedral was completed back in the 1350’s, although the initial footprint of the cathedral can be dated as far as a Roman church in 1124. A small staircase may find you ducking into a tunnel to a crypt lined with Roman era tombs and walls. Looking up at the Gothic style ceiling you’ll find rich Baroque brushstrokes at dizzying heights.
Artwork is strewn throughout the cathedral, everywhere you look the warm tones of the Flemish masters surrounds. I found myself gasping at Reubens’ “Descent from the Cross” and feeling a bit emotional while taking in the lovingly carved van der Woot Pulpit- an opulent tribute to the coming together of nature and religion.
Antwerp is so overwhelmed with its own history it is actually difficult to find details- I have no idea whose tomb I am stepping on, or when exactly these stained glass panels were placed.
European cathedrals feel like stepping into a time capsule- do you have a favorite? ⛪️🤩🙏🇧🇪.
