Welcome to the Bryars & Bryars #adventcalendar , designed by the fabulous @rosiebrooksillustration. Our job as antiquarian book and map dealers is strange and awesome, and people often have questions. We're going to be answering one a day until Christmas.⠀
🎄 Do you have maps from all over the world? 🎄 ⠀
Ooh, yeah. Most map dealers will have a specialism (you can guess what ours is), but we also want to cater to as many people as possible. In an international city like London, that means having some of everything. If we don't have something but a fellow map-dealer does, we'll send you to them.⠀
One thing to note is the difference between maps we don't have and maps that don't exist. The most common impossible ask (at least for us) is interior East Africa. It wasn't mapped in the sense that we understand it until the later nineteenth century, and older decorative maps that show the coastline tend to have big, blank 'regions unexplorèd' bits where the rest of map should be. We'll always explain when this is the case. No-one at Bryars & Bryars is ever going to history-shame you for not knowing the details of Western world mapping. ⠀
The second most common impossible ask is for treasure maps or smugglers' maps. People don't tend to leave paper trails for the hangman to follow.⠀
Interestingly, whaling maps are likewise impossible. A combination of hard use and ruthless obsolescence (using an out-of-date sea chart will get you real dead real quick) means that survival rates from any type of map used shipboard are very low compared to other contemporary maps. But in this case we're not even talking about sea charts, but the specific places where whales might be found. That was a closely guarded secret between captain and harpooner. Anything that might be written down wouldn't be left hanging around.⠀
|| INSTALLATION ||
The most exciting part of my job comes when the design has been lifted from the board and the installation process begins. At this point, clients can finally visualise the ‘end point’. This is not finished, but once wallpaper hits the wall, it is a huge turning point. -
This scheme was all about retaining antiques and period features, but upscaling with elegant modern finishes. This beautifully reflective wallpaper from @cole_and_son_wallpapers has transformed a dark room into an elegant family room. -
Excited to see the final installation stage of soft furnishings and decor details.
Walnut library steps.
This set of Walnut library steps were made in the first part of the 20th century.
The steps with a double turned hand rail to each side of the steps.
Library steps are very difficult to find, and we are delighted to be able to offer these to you.
