While living in San Diego and working with @sincityskates , I had the pleasure of meeting @drewscary one summer where we both worked @rollercon . We almost instantly became close friends and I’m extremely grateful for this human in my life.
When I moved and transferred to @angelcityderby , it marked the first time we’d be skating together (on the same team) which excited both of us lots. While I’m imagining all the great teamwork and strategy that’s going to happen with this human I already communicate with so well, people asked us time and time again: “So are you derby wives?!?!” Lol.
No. No no.
It’s not that we’re upset you’ve noticed our exceptional camaraderie, it’s just that it’s a name that doesn’t apply to us on multiple levels. Not only does the idea of traditional, binary marriage not fit our outlook - we don’t even identify as strictly “female”! We found a term we felt much more comfortable with and we’d like to share it with you:
Thank you to my fabulous QUEER PEER for all the support (both on the track and with this project). The fight for what’s right is always just a bit easier with you by my side.
I bet some of you have Queer Peers too ✨👽❤️ Tag them here and share your story/appreciation.
Have you tried the Sisu Go guard yet? Smaller in price and size, yet still providing the protection and scientific design allowing you to talk, breathe and drink through the most intense derby moments. Here’s what @angelcityderby jammer @laryn_kill has to say about it!
“I received my fair share of hits to the jaw & mouth during the most intense portion of our season. I felt no difference in the quality of safety the smaller SISU mouth guard provided. Plus, this version has a less rigid edge, so when I would get hit in the mouth the inside of my lip wouldn’t get cut and sheared open. I wore it all through champs training and our 2018 championship tournament, and I will still wear it next season. Small, yet mighty!”
I imagine this was sketched out while trackside at Champs. Not sure if it really was, but that'd be awesome if it was! 😍 Artwork by @figue_visual #rollerderbyart

Because of their way to play roller derby, my three favorites on #wftdachamps were #freighttrain#rachelrotten#tarantula @rachtilldeath @ahsinity @rosecityrollers @rcrallstars @angelcityderby @texasrollergirls @wftda. They are amazing.
First game done and dusted! A tidy win against Jacksonville 248 to 85!
The positive energy and camaraderie between my team was amazing, that felt super jazzy. All those smiles warmed my heart ❤️💛 Next we play VRDL TONIGHT at 8pm CST, 6pm PST, 1pm Saturday Melbourne time!
Nothing like going into a game off a big win with literally nothing to loose...🔥🔥🔥 WHO'S CHEERING FOR ANGEL CITY TONIGHT??
Pippa loves my new @riedellroller bag as much as I do. 😍
Unfortunately, this brings my Instagram takeover to an end. I hope you enjoyed this small glimpse into my world. I’ve got to kick my little stowaway out and get busy packing up all my gear for my flight tomorrow.
See you all in NOLA! Pop! Pop!#scarletsinnola#angelcityderby#wftdachamps @radarwheels @s1rollerderby @spankalley @187derby @triple8quad
I’M SO EXCITED!!!! One more sleep and then I’m off to Champs. Well, packing and then sleep. The worst thing about traveling for derby is having to leave the kids behind. Pippa and Freddie have my whole heart. ❤️ We rescued Pippa a little over 4 years ago and Freddie we rescued earlier this year. Pippa hasn’t fully accepted not being an only child anymore, but Freddie continues to be the best brother. He’s so patient and even though he could fit her whole head in his month, he doesn’t, even when she kicks him off the bed and steals all his treats.
I’m going to miss the two of them so much, but I know they will be in good hands while I’m away. The sad eyes still kill me though! 😭
Today is flying by! Most of my Teammates are on their way to NOLA, or are already there, while I’m still in California dreaming of beignets. I live in the bustling metropolis of Rancho Cucamonga, CA. I’m nowhere near the beach, but there are vineyards down the way, a beautiful view of the mountains, and Joshua Tree is about an 1.5 hrs away. The thing I miss most about the east coast are the seasons. It’s November and it’s 72 degrees out and not a cloud in the sky!
I’m diligently chipping away at my to do list before I can call it a day. I work in Arts Administration for a local college and our fall production opens the weekend after #WFTDACHAMPS . There was a brief window of time during the season planning sessions where that production was scheduled to open this weekend. 😳 That would have been really unfortunate because I would have missed out on all the beignets! 😂 #angelcityderby#scarletsinnola
Good Morning! My name is Soledad and it’s my day to do take over the Angel City Derby Instagram. I’m a Captain and blocker for the Hollywood Scarlets and I am counting down the hours until my team takes the track in NOLA on that beautiful polished concrete surface. 😝 I started playing roller derby back in 2008, but this is only my 6th Season with the Hollywood Scarlets. I transferred to ACD from @dcrollergirls in Washington DC. I packed up a truck with my #rideordie and we drove cross country with all our belongings to sunny California. Initially, I wasn’t sure if we were going to be able to make roller derby work after the move. At the time, the closest WFTDA League to our new home in the Inland Empire was 110 miles roundtrip. The commute was a hard pill to swallow, especially since I use to live 2 miles away from our practice space in DC, but I’m glad I stuck it out.
When I started playing roller derby 10 years ago, I never imagined that I’d be headed to my 6th WFTDA Champs! Change is inevitable in roller derby and the Scarlets saw a lot of that this season. It has been a crazy ride thus far and I can’t wait to see what NOLA has in store for us.
We cancelled practice tonight to give the team time to rest and prep for travel. They are ready. They are more ready, in my opinion than they have been all season.
As I pack my coaching bag and reflect on this season and what it means for me to be a coach. #1 it’s not about me, knowing when to push and when to pull them back but always to support them and help them in the best way that I can to be the athletes THEY want to be. Oh and to make all the faces when talking to the refs 😉 Next up is @soledadiii
See y’all in New Orleans POP POP ❤️💛❤️💛
That’s better 😊 This is my 10th season with ACD, 3rd as coach for the Hollywood Scarlets, before that I was a level 3 #wftda referee & before that I was a Rocket Queen. It’s safe to say that I love this league & this sport. So hang out and I’ll show you a bit of my life off the track & how I’m prepping to take the Scarlets to #wftdachamps in New Orleans #scarletsinnola#angelcityderby
Good morning derby world. This is Memphis who is hungry and I’m Charmer, coach for the Hollywood Scarlets and I’ll be your host for the day! But first I gotta feed this little one and get some coffee ☕️ #wftdachamps#angelcityderby#scarletsinnola
Hey 👋 I’m @crackherjack39
I’m taking over #angelcityderby IG today and getting ready to leave for #WFTDAChamps in New Orleans on Wednesday! Our first game is on Friday at Noon (New Orleans time). #ScarletsinNOLA
I’m a recent (March 2018) transfer to Angel City from Greater Vancouver Roller Derby @mainlandmisfits. I came to LA as a blocker and I am now jamming for the Hollywood Scarlets!
Join me on a chill day of running errands and practice later tonight!
With only a few days left before champs, I started packing but got only got the essentials... Anyway I hope you enjoyed spending the day with me and seeing the daily life of a Scarlet!
Up next is the amazing @crackherjack39
See you in New Orleans!
Shameless plug about why junior roller derby is important: As we approach champs this week I’m reflecting on my time in derby and amazed that I’m 19 and going into my second WFTDA Championships. When I was 11 and found this amazing sport I never expected to be here and looking back at how much I’ve grown is a little crazy! I’ve quite literally grown up in derby as you can see and I’m so thankful that this community is who has helped defined who I am. Moral of the story, support your juniors, they are awesome!
Hello Instagram!!! I’m Death Down Under and I’ll be taking over the ACD account today! Hope everyone enjoyed the extra hour of sleep this morning 😴
I joined ACD and the Scarlets last year just in time for champs after aging out of junior roller derby after 6 years as a junior. I’m currently a sophomore at the University of Southern California studying biomedical engineering (definite nerd status here🤓) and loving the chance to be a Southern California girl after growing up in Colorado!
Stay tuned throughout the day to see posts and stories about a day in my life as I prep for champs and to to survive the end of midterms... #angelcityderby#WFTDAchamps#scarletsinnola
Hi, I'm West! @athletewest99 And today I will share a little about myself.
I am a transfer from Baja Roller Derby Team of Mexico, in March of this year and my position is Jammer.
The first month of transfer was difficult, because Ensenada Mexico traveled around 6 or 7hrs to practice with ACD in Los Angeles. Then it was practically like a nomad or a homless. Living in 3 different houses (in Anaheim, Gardena and LongBeach) to continue practicing Roller Derby with Angel City <3.
I currently live in LongBeach with my sister BlockLobster and Matt her husband, they accepted me into their home as a member of their family 💕Along with 3 baby dogs. (Olive, Elvira and Frankie) They are uns Angeles in my way.
I work as an freelancer Graphic Designer online and also in the field of biology. XD I love nature. I grew up in a ranch in Mexico. My family is everything in my life. I love tacos and I Love coffee absolutly 😌
And I feel happy to represent my Country Mexico with ACD. Stay tuned on my instagram stories 👀, during the day I will upload photos and videos of my life and a normal day for West.
For as long as I could remember I always wanted to medal at playoffs. That’s the goal when you’re in D1, right?
My decision to move Los Angeles was based in my military-brat upbringing for not staying in a spot for too long. With a new city to look forward to moving to, I knew I wanted to keep skating. Before I transferred to Angel City I thought maybe I wouldn’t be skilled enough to make the Scarlet’s charter; and I was okay with that. When I did make the charter/roster and knew I was going to Spain I was secretly petrified that I would eat 💩. When ACD medaled (insert DJ air horn) and I was apart of what essentially was a 3 jammer rotation for that whole weekend I was beyond amazed. This team has taken what balled up little jammer I was and smashed me into something a little better 😏. It’s a week until the first games of @wftda champs and win, lose, or draw (there’s no draws in roller derby except for that one time...) I’m grateful for ACD taking me in and letting me be apart of their success. *I took this photo to send to my mom. She has no idea what roller derby is, only that it’s something I spend all my time doing.*
Hello! My name is Laryn Kill (pronounced Lauren) and I will be your Angel City Derby Instagram Host today.
I transferred to Angel City from Tampa in July as a jammer. I work as an operating room Registered Nurse; currently at an orthopedic surgery center specializing in sports injuries.
The handsome black cat you’ll see is Raùl.
Stay tuned in to the IG stories as well as the posts today as I try to give you a glimpse into my life. •
As my IG take over comes to an end, i leave you with my Halloween costume 😂

Good Morning INSTAGRAM!!!
I'm volcanic smash and I will be taking over the league account today 💪🏾
I transferred to Angel City at the end of last season and have been loving EVERY MINUTE.
I'm a derby loving, soccer playing, beach going, taco eating, fun having, Southern Cali chick.
So sit back relax and enjoy a day in the life of SMASH and how I prep for champs.
Well it’s after midnight, so technically November and no longer Halloween. But I just got home from practice and wanted to say goodnight. It’s been fun, and I hope you enjoyed spending the day with me. I leave you with this random photo (📸 #derbyrazziphotography ) of me skating in a dinosaur onesie in the middle of the desert in the middle of the summer because @rollercon 😂
If you want to see more, you can always follow me @boo.is.215lbs. See ya in NOLA!

So about that commute: two wheels on California highways is the only way to go! Lane splitting takes a 120 mile 2.45-3hr commute and cuts it into just about 2 hours.
1. Vintage #Vespa 90 two stroke shifty, no it can’t go on the highway. Max speed with me is about 60mph for a brief stint (I still have and ride this around town)
2. Honda #Rebel 250 starter bike that I rattled the chain off of trying to keep up to CA traffic. I could cruise at 75 but was completely maxed out.
3. #Suzuki Savage 650 that died when the engine ceased on the highway; it couldn’t handle the LA commute
4. #Triumph Speedmaster 1200. I love this thing!
Hollywood Scarlets are heading to champs in a week! As we get ready to go, we thought it might be fun to let you get a peak into some of our skaters’ lives off the track. For the next few days a new skater will take over the Angel City Derby Instagram for the day. Hope you enjoy our posts and stories!
Hi! Boo Gogi here. Halloween is my jam- this time of year, everything is all about me (ghosties) 👻, so I get to start the Instagram take over! This is my first season with ACD, and I’m so excited to be skating with the Hollywood Scarlets! Before transferring I used to skate banked track with @derbydolls and dabbled in flat track with @socalderby . I still live and work in San Diego, but I commute 3+ days a week to the ACD warehouse.
In case you saw our stories earlier and were confused, that’s me waking up and going to work before the crack of dawn! I’m a neurophysiologist and do intraoperative monitoring. (Yes, I’m a doctor- during brain and spine surgeries, I monitor nerves to make sure people will be able to move when they wake up.) Good times.

After a long day of skating Kaitlynn’s foot began to cramp up. Kaitlynn has issues with Plantar Faciitis, that’s where the tendon on the bottom of the foot tightens and causes inflammation and pain. By using a graston tool I am able to break up fibrous buildup quickly, which allows Kaitlynn to return to skating #rollerderby#angelcityderby#footpainrelief
This felt more energetic than it looks. Took 1st place with Nasty Bs at Jammin' for Juggs...also took 2nd place with Nightmare Squad. Just hedging my bets. Thanks @southcoastrollerderby for the great time! #nowicanstartmybreak#rollerderby#angelcityderby
