Shortly into this 10 mile hike through the countryside just outside of #paris , my #gypsyspirit experienced a profound activation. After hours of walking through varied terrain of mossy forests and fields of wheat baking under the hot sun, we found a shady spot next to a little farmstead where we sat amidst chickens and sheep while snacking on freshly baked bread, olives, cheese from the marketplace and the most incredible charcuterie I have ever tasted. It felt just like a scene straight out of a Paolo Coelho novel. Is this real life? It is. It really truly is. .
I learned something while on this journey through the countryside of soul remembering. Although in the States we have a very romanticized perception of #gypsies as free spirited beings who are deeply connected with nature while at the same time not being attached to one particular place and able to travel with simplicity and ease, in Europe there is an entirely different perception of them. While it may appeal to some of us rebels as the ultimate #anarchy and #freedom to live this way, in reality many times Roma caravans will pull into neighborhoods and public parks, destroying property, highjacking electricity, and leaving areas trashed. Of course, it's not great to stereotype and create a perception of an entire culture of people based on the actions of a few, yet with the widespread negative perceptions of gypsies in a land as committed to liberty and to bucking authority as France is, it's hard to reconcile my soul's remembering of travelling with seasons and living close to the Earth without attachment to material possessions with the stories I hear from people living in places where these experiences are very real. Is it just this culture's way of creating more prejudice around an already marginalized group that doesn't fit in with the status quo? How did this disconnect happen between our ideas of what it means to be a gypsy spirit and the reality of today? Is it ok to still identify with this archetype while ignoring the cultural perceptions present today? Genuine questions seeking genuine responses...
