I’m knocked down today, friends.
When I feel like this, I like to get upside down, remind myself how strong I am at the core of my being, shift perspective and then go SLOW AF into the tasks ahead of me and give my body the care it’s begging for.
When you see people post photos of their practice, a nice long flow or some handstand action, or whatever, know that often times there is slow movement, (or in my case today a cozy bed) waiting on the other side.
This practice is energizing, rejuvenating and empowering 100% of the time.
It’s also a remarkable tool to put you in touch with how you’re truly feeling. It will tell you exactly what your body needs if you LISTEN.
It’s 158,485,394 times more valuable if you listen.
I dare you.
Do you notice a difference in your energy as the days get shorter?
Here are 4 tips to help ease you into the darker months (without feeling like garbage):
1️⃣ WAKE EARLY TO WALK. Get up with the sun and get your body moving.
2️⃣ PRACTICE PRANAYAMA. Energizing breathing practices can balance the body.
3️⃣ DECREASE ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. Computers, smart phones, TVs, etc. all emit blue light that disrupts our natural cycles.
4️⃣ DO YOGA. Not surprising, right? Sun salutations build heat and mobility in the body and warm it up during the colder months.
Or, better yet, come to the studio and get the benefits of all of these at once. 😏
WHO REMEMBERS THIS? ✋🖤 #throwbackthursday
When AM began, we didn’t have a studio yet. We had a mission – to bring yoga to as many people as possible. So we started where we were and gave what we had wherever we could… our living room, art museums, restaurants and bars in the community… you name it, we taught there.
Now we’ve got our AMazing studio, but our community club is still a huge part of who we are.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
You don't have to wait until it's perfect, big enough, good enough, planned perfectly or whatever else you're waiting for. Just start.
Not many people know that before we had a studio we created our AM Community Club. It was intentionally created to bring people together to practice yoga out in our awesome city.

Alright. Day 7 of #365amyogachallenge : why a daily practice. You'd think I'd have thought to put on makeup, do my hair, or even evaluate the camera angle, given my loathing of seeing myself speak on camera, BUT I didn't so here it is, raw and uncut. Swipe for the (definitely non-exhaustive) list of reasons. 😀

What’s your fave and least favorite yoga pose? 🖤💀
Least fave: Dancer 💃 I used to feel so steady and like I could hold it all day. Since baby, it seems so “wide open” to me - super vulnerable and all weird and clenchy about my c section scar.
Current fave: Half moon 🌙 This one feels strong as hell. Now that I’ve found my core (😂), I love the grounding and openness all at once.
Funny how it’s constantly changing, right? Everyday I show up. Everyday the practice is the same. Everyday I am totally different.
Day 7: WHY A DAILY PRACTICE?
There are truly too many reasons to explain in 60 seconds.
Life. ✨✨✨ We get one life on this earth.
Don’t waste it or wish it away.
This practice lights me up and helps me dive into the people and things that matter to me.
Who wouldn’t want that? ✨✨✨
Day 6 of #365amyogachallenge : #armbalance
I already posted the other arm balances from my shoot with @modbettieportraits so I thought I'd use this opportunity to post the last one: #firefly . 🔥
One of my teachers told our class a great story about a firefly. It landed on her but wasn't lighting up. She told it it needed to light up, to show off its gift, so the world would know it's special. When it flew away without ever lighting up, she realized the things she said to the firefly weren't actually for the firefly. It was for her.
We bring our baggage, good and bad, to every moment of our lives. It shows up in how we treat each other and ourselves, in how we talk to each other and ourselves, how we act, how we make decisions, and what we think. We cannot cut off the strings of all that's come before to create us, but we can learn to recognize what we bring and why. And once we've had the opportunity to meet and get to know each piece of baggage in this way, we can see how, why, and what we are, which then shows us these things about others and the world as a whole. That level of knowing--of seeing--can eliminate anxiety and depression because, among other things, it enables the person to see their power and forgive where they've faltered. Imagine then, the inner peace that could bring. It just takes practice. Lots and lots of practice. . .
*Interesting afterthought: this discussion of her firefly story is a very different interpretation and pondering than when I first heard her tell it. Further evidence of how what we're bringing influences perspective and processing.
Day 4 of #365amyogachallenge : show me where you practice. This is the future at-home practice spot 😍. We gutted our second story, converting a hallway and two rooms-- the master bedroom and my former yoga/ meditation room-- into one large loft bedroom. The northernmost part of the room will be the new, more spacious yoga space! My favorite practice location is @amyoga111's studio but I'm going to make this little space a close second. 😀
Day 5: Challenging Pose
Dhanurasana - Bow Pose
I’ve got plenty of reasons my mind & body resist this beautiful posture.
At the end of the day the particulars don’t matter.
What matters is that I notice the reasons, am comfortable sitting with them, and create equal amounts of breaking resistance & giving myself grace.
It’s daily effort that brings abundant ease & it’s worth every single moment.
Day 5: a pose that challenges you. WHEEL. For a long tome this has been a N O pose for me. I’m always my angriest when I’m in wheel. I haven’t photographed my practice in awhile and when I saw this picture I was SHOCKED. Swipe to see what my wheel looked like in December of 2016. My story about the pose has more or less stayed the same but I still do it anyway and LOOK WHAT A DIFFERENCE two years can make. Trust the practice people, it will take care of you - even when it challenges you. #365amyogachallenge @amyoga111 #practiceanyway#amyoga111#wheel#amyoga365
Can we have a MOMENT? 😍 We owe a huge thank you to this AMazing community who filled our LOVE DOT wall over the past week. You’re the real MVPs ✊
Thank you for helping us fulfill our vision that YOGA SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE.
PS the BOGO promotion may be over, but you can always buy a LOVE DOT from the front desk to support someone who needs yoga 🙏
Show Us A Pose That Challenges You
I’ve been balancing on my hands since I was a lil tot.
So when I got serious about my yoga practice in my 20’s I thought, “Abs, you used to be a gymnast. You SHOULD be better at handstands.”
Well, I’m not.
I got hips.
I have a mostly healed shoulder injury.
And I just plain don’t practice hand balances enough to be really good at them.
It’s highly likely that I don’t practice them enough because of that should statement I carry around in my back pocket.
The challenge here is not so much about strength or knowledge, though I could take more of both.
My challenge is my Own Damn Ego.
Now I’ve noticed.
Now I’ve got some power to fix it.
💡 “If I can lift one toe off the ground in crow, what else can I do…”
💡 “If I can hold chair one breath longer than I thought I could, what else can I do…”
💡 “If I can actually calm down and enjoy Savasana, what else can I do…”
This practice makes you aware of your limitlessness on the mat, so you can realize it off the mat too. And that’s some pretty powerful 💩, right?
Tell us your “If I can…..” moment in the comments! 👇
**And if you REALLY want to realize your power, start practicing EVERY DAY. We’ll be releasing details for our 2019 365 program soon, so keep your eyes peeled for more info on our game-changing signature program.
Day 4: Show us where you practice!
Abundantly thankful for a solid home practice, especially with 2 littles to raise.
But if given the choice, @amyoga111 is haven, home and health for my heart & soul.
So is the woman posing with me and everyone else in my AM fAM. ✨✨✨
‘Show Us Where You Practice’
I practice literally all over the place, probably some places my friends wish I wouldn’t... like the middle of the street at 1 a.m.
But this is by far my favorite room to practice in. Preferably with a lot of pals too.
Day 3 of #365amyogachallenge = #yogaoutside ! .
This pose has brought a lot of lessons on taking things slow. This is the first time attempting the flip grip in several months after a shoulder thing showed up--again. I don't usually want to take things slow. I want to dive in head first doing mach 3! This year, my right shoulder, left knee, and possibly a hernia (! do women even get hernias?!) have forced me to start listening. So, in honoring the process, there was a significant amount of warm up time before the camera was even turned on tonight (I almost lost daylight for the shot! 😂), I stopped short of the foot with the second hand, and held back from kicking harder into deeper extension. 😕 I loathe holding back. But I loathe injuries more, so this is me finally getting the memo.

They are ALWAYS watching.
Look at my daughter’s face.
She’s in awe.
It’s as if she saw some magic.
It’s a pose I do nearly everyday.
I’m working on being as proud of myself as she is of me.
That there IS magic.
If we don’t teach them that, they’re going to learn otherwise.
NOT ON MY WATCH. ✨✨✨ Love yourself in the easy, the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary.
They will too.
