📝📚 #emilydickinson #emilydickinsonmuseum #amherst #americanliterature #americanicon #poet #enigma

If you read one book, just one book, read « The fire next time » by James Baldwin. Powerful, masterly written, gut-wrenching, true. Dare I say, from my garden of privileges.

#currentlyreading — After continuously seeing books by Toni Morrison on @reggiereads IG stories I knew I really had to buy a copy of one of them. My local second-hand bookshop had A LOT to choose from, so I decided upon “a mercy” because it’s a tiny book. After reading the first few pages I was immediately hooked! I am sure this will turn out to be a slow and powerful read...

I was at an upscale steakhouse off Peachtree Street. In a long, ruffled-back blazer over a seamless cami—with a pair of strappy high heels and my hair pinned up—I looked like I was here to meet the man of my dreams. Instead, I was here to dismiss a playboy film producer. I always aimed to dress attractive and sexy—and on club nights, slutty and porny—because Isaiah had always had say-so over what I wore out. The only time he let me show some skin above the knee was when I was in public with him.
.
So my attire tonight wasn't for Rayshawn. It was for me.
.
Looking up from my menu, I watched Rayshawn approach. He was wearing a sharp gray suit—Tom Ford, I guessed—with an eye-popping gold Rolex on his wrist. He casted a self-assured smile that made my skin crawl, because it reminded me of my ex-husband. Isaiah would smile at me the same way whenever I picked him up from the airport, after one of his weekend getaways with Delana Cobbins—getaways he thought I didn't know about.
.
"Nice to see you again," Rayshawn said, coming over to my side of the table.
.
Reluctantly, I got up and gave him a hug. He kissed me on the cheek, then we sat back down. I sneakily stared across the table at him as he opened up his menu; I tried to tell myself that he wasn't as handsome as I initially thought—but he was.
.
"Okay," he said, then rubbed his hands together with greedy intent. "I don't know where to start. I'm too excited."
.
"You shouldn't be," I said.
.
His expression sunk. "Why not?"
.
"Because this is the last time you'll be seeing me."
.

It's not even past". W książce innych bohaterów poznajemy dzięki Richardowi, gdyż to on jest naszymi oczami w powieści. Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. #dylandthomas The poem laments the necessity and inevitability of death, encouraging the aged to rebel against their fate. The poem suggests that we should leave this world the way we came in-kicking and screaming, holding on to life for all we’re worth. #poem #americanliterature #literature

It's done. We read, thought, and learned a lot. Splendid students! Wonderfully warm-hearted, incredibly enthusiastic about studying everything that was before them, and fundamentally full of good! Genuine virtue was here and there. It is a real privilege to learn with such students. Thank you very much!

Whose house is this?
Whose night keeps out the light
In here?
Say, who owns this house?
It’s not mine.
I dreamed another, sweeter, brighter
With a view of lakes crossed in painted boats;
Of fields wide as arms open for me.
This house is strange.
Its shadows lie.
Say, tell me, why does its lock fit my key?

FOREST DARK - NICOLE KRAUSS
‘Instead, fearful of the kind of violent emotion I’d known in childhood from my family, I harnessed myself to a man who seemed to have a preternatural knack for constancy no matter what happened within or without. And then I harnessed myself to the habit and schedule of a highly organized, disciplined, healthy life as if everything depended on it, as if my children’s well-being and happiness required this harnessing of not only all my hours and days but my thoughts, too, my whole spirit. While the other unformed and nameless life grew dimmer and dimmer, less and less accessible, until I succeeded in closing the door on it completely.’ (p. 168-169)

"The enemy was anyone who was someone he wanted to be or who had anything he wanted to have." In Cold Blood. This novel is worth revisiting often. Not only does Capote's prose astonish the reader into submission via his stark, play by play account of the Clutter family murders on that fateful Kansas night, it offers the very (maybe) unpopular theory that Man is only hemmed in by laws and rules as a bull in a fence made of matchsticks. Not only does Capote's prose astonish the reader into submission via his stark, play by play account of the Clutter family murders on that fateful Kansas night, it offers the very (maybe) unpopular theory that Man is only hemmed in by laws and rules as a bull in a fence made of matchsticks. I know why the caged bird sings
Maya Angelou
.
A free bird leaps on the back
Of the wind and floats downstream
Till the current ends and dips his wing
In the orange suns rays
And dares to claim the sky.
.
But a BIRD that stalks down his narrow cage
Can seldom see through his bars of rage
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.
.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
Of things unknown but longed for still
And his tune is heard on the distant hill for
The caged bird sings of freedom.
.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
And the trade winds soft through
The sighing trees
And the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright
Lawn and he names the sky his own.
.
But a caged BIRD stands on the grave of dreams
His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.
.
The caged bird sings with
A fearful trill of things unknown
But longed for still and his
Tune is heard on the distant hill
For the caged bird sings of freedom.

Revisiting classic American literature this year, I decided to dip back into the Hemingways I missed in my early 20’s. The engaging writing, the energy, and his visceral descriptions of Paris are on full display here, and it’s nice to recreate my own version of that lifestyle in my local garden cafe via morning chat, coffee, and healthy eats with a good friend. My one beef reading Hemingway as a lady with life experience is that his main characters’ lady muses/love obsessions read a little one and two-dimensional for a modern female ear. #americanliterature #literature #emersoncollegealumni #writersofinstagram #classicliterature #hemingway #summereads @bedstuyresident #bedstuy

My books have been packed in boxes in our garage since last November (!) because my husband is planning on building built-ins. But the other day I realized I could find temporary storage spots in the house, and it has been such a joy/relief to unbox them. I got that amazing surprised feeling you get when you’re reacquainted with something that you totally forgot you owned, like this 1947 edition of John O’Hara’s APPOINTMENT IN SAMARRA.
Parenting Pro-Tip: wait to organize your books during naptime, otherwise your toddler might try to “help” and/or crawl into a plastic tub and/or open the garage door without your permission. This definitely didn’t happen in our house this morning.

"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be." J.D.Salinger, The Cather in the Rye

"While awaiting trial for war crimes in an Israeli prison, Howard W. Campbell Jr. sets down his memoirs on an old German typewriter. He has used a similar typewriter, when he worked as a Nazi propagandist under Goebbels. Though that was before he agreed to become a spy for the US military. Is Howard guilty? Can a black or white verdict ever be reached?" Ready to delve into my first Vonnegut book. It seems to pose some interesting political questions.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee, which explores themes such as Southern life, morality, class and innocence while dealing with serious issues like rape and racism in a warm and humerous manner. The novel's characters and plot are based on Lee's observation of her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. The story is through the eyes of Jean Finch, whose father Atticus Finch tries to defend an evidently innocent African American (Tom Robinson) from the accusation of rape of a white woman. The novel highlights several cases of racial inequality, notably where Robinson is convicted of rape even in the face of overwhelming indictive evidence and Atticus being labeled a 'N***er lover' for defending Robinson. The novel has come under fire for the extensive use of racial slurs and open discussions about rape, and has been repeatedly challenged in schools for its appropriatness. Nonetheless, the book has since become a major success, with over 30 million copies of the book existing as well as being translated into 40 languages. Atticus Finch's model of integrity in the field of Law, has also influenced the legal profession with some lawyers claiming Finch's defense of Robinson as being the reason why they became lawyers, while others have called Finch a 'folk hero' in the legal profession. To Kill A Mockingbird was rated by British librarians as being a 'book every adult must read before they die', ranking it ahead of the Bible and was awarded the prestigious Pulitzer prize. The novel was adapted to a film in 1962, winning three Oscars including Best Actor. I would personally recommend people to read this book as it is a very deep and interesting book.

Finally tracked down a copy of this super scarce 1932 first printing with jacket. I’ve put off reading it until now because that feminist press mash up greatest hits paperback reprint thing did not reflect the original, stories were added and rearranged, for why? I really couldn’t say. So far, fifty or so in, the wait was well worth it, this is just lovely.

Just finished this book. Best final paragraph I’ve read in a long time, at the end of a story that isn’t over. I would love to ask Mr. Kittredge what he has learned about and from women in the last 30 years, and what he thinks of the Malheur occupation.

Pre-facing this by saying: I love to read. I love books. I love literature. I am a die hard bookworm/nerd. 🤓🐛 Growing up, I was never allowed to play with video games, was never granted cable television, but I was showered with literature and library cards. 📚 Barnes & Noble trips were my favorite way to spend the weekends. 📚
_______
As a graduate student, I sometimes have a million articles to read per week, HOWEVER: you will always catch me with a “fun book” in hand. My “fun books” are not always fiction fantasy books: they are sometimes self help books, poetry books, Spanish books, textbook / research books even make my list.
_______
Really disappointed when I told my professor this past Spring semester that I was excited I had gotten 7 new books on sale at a bookstore and her response was “yeah good luck getting through them while in grad school” & I was like 🧐🤨🙄😒 Rude. Lol girl bye.
_______
Reading makes me so happy. It enhances my vocabulary, my style of writing, & my imagination, which I think we can all benefit from. 💭🌈
_______
Of Mice & Men is a classic. John Steinbeck is the author of my favorite novel, East of Eden. His work is classical and timeless. If y’all haven’t read this one, pick it up. It’s a quick read. However, be warned, it is a tragedy. 📚

. Our Nature Rae Armantrout . The very flatness of portraits makes for nostalgia in the connoisseur. . Here’s the latest little lip of wave to flatten and spread thin. . Let’s say it shows our recklessness, . our fast gun, . our self-consciousness which was really . our infatuation with our own fame, . our escapes, . the easy way we’d blend in . with the peasantry, . our loyalty to our old gang . from among whom it was our nature . to be singled out . https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/54881/our-nature - 08/14/18 . Reading #hereiam and #extremelyloudandincrediblyclose by #jonathansafranfoer I cried so much that I've made myself sure again that being in love (for example - with #americanwriters ) is full of pain 💔 (cause the #books finish at some point and are so beautiful that it makes my heart tear into pieces) 📖
Today I'm gonna spend a beautiful day in a beautiful place with Foer and his amazing #everythingisilluminated and go back to work on #literature even though I still have a month of summer left 💙💛💚💜🖤 I love my job! 😍

Tommy Orangen romaanin There There (Alfred A. Knopf 2018) hankin itselleni suurin odotuksin luettuani kirjaa käsitelleen jutun New York Timesista. Kun kuvaustekstissä sanotaan kirjan äänen olevan "a voice full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with urgency and force", odotin todella sen olevan niin, mutta tyyli on lähinnä raportoivaa realismia.

"Jackie kneeled in front of the minifridge. In her head she heard her mom say, 'The spider's web is a home and a trap.' And even though she never really knew what her mom meant by it, she'd been making it make sense over the years, giving it more meaning than her mom propably ever intented. In this case Jackie was the spider, and the minifridge was the web.
