Transverse Abdominis OFF ↔️ ON
Here's why we LOVE deep core work and why it's so essential to your pregnancy workouts!
1. Maintain a strong connection with your deep core muscles - transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, diaphragm & multifidus.
2. Teaches mamas effective pushing technique for labour. Learning how/when to effectively engage and release your deep core muscles in connection with your breath, has been noted to reduce the active 'pushing' stage of labour by over half the time!
3. Can reduce exaggerated abdominal separation (diastasis recti) during pregnancy.
4. Stabilises the spine and pelvis reducing lower back and pelvic pain.
To engage your TVA correctly, we want to think about giving baby a big hug.
INHALE: let your breath fill the ribcage sidewards (note your breath should never be forcing your belly out - it's a subtle, natural move). Your TVA and pelvic floor will soften.
EXHALE: think of lifting the pelvic floor upwards and gently wrapping from the spine around to your belly button, visualising a corset wrapping around your belly can help with this. Check you aren't pulling 'belly button to spine' and your pelvis stays in neutral throughout.
You can do these 'belly pumps' on their own or add them to your current exercise if you are confident you are performing them CORRECTLY - if you are unsure that you are safely engaging your core, speak with someone you know has specific training in this field 💛
