Good Morning! Happy Monday! Hope you have a great day!
This photo was taken at Little River Canyon in Alabama. I have to make a correction. In an earlier post I said it is a State Park but later was reminded by my husband that it is actually a Federal Preserve. Just thought that was an important distinction. .

Harrison Brothers Hardware in Huntsville, Alabama is part shopping experience and part living history museum. It is the oldest continuously operating hardware store in Alabama. Opened on the square in 1897 by brothers James B. and Daniel T. Harrison, the business was family run until 1983 when the Historic Huntsville Foundation purchased the store. Their goal has been to preserve the store in a way that would honor the founders ideas and traditions.
.
Much of the original store remains intact including counters, display shelves, wood floors, and fixtures. One of our favorite parts of the experience is that sales are still rung up on a 1907 cash register which was originally used by James and Daniel. Today Harrison Brothers Hardware is operated by the Historic Huntsville Foundation and is staffed by volunteers. #historyhsv #ihearthsv #southernreverie

Happy Sunday I worked at this beautiful historic home this weekend and had to share a photo 📸 This is the Springdale Estate in Andalusia, Alabama. It was built in the early 1930's and is completely preserved! I love the red truck sitting in front of the house ❤️ I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and have a great start to your week!

Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Alabama is the oldest and largest cemetery in the city. It was founded around 1822 on two acres but now encompasses nearly 100 acres and over 80,000 graves. Resting here are five governors of Alabama, five United States senators, and numerous other figures of local, state, and national note.
.
The Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll is an annual, autumn Huntsville event. It is one of the largest cemetery strolls in the country with more than 75 historical characters. Not all are buried in Maple Hill, but are part of Huntsville’s historic story. .
Here’s just a few of the characters this year:
.
Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968) was born in Huntsville and became a film and theatre actress. Bankhead was known for her husky voice, outrageous personality, and glamorous, risqué lifestyle.
.
Jeremiah Clemens (1814-1865) Opposed secession and was a Loyalist during the Civil War. Clemens was the author of Tobias Wilson, one of the first American Civil War novels. He was a cousin to Mark Twain. His bride, Mary Read Clemens (also pictured) died at age 33. .
Madam Mollie Teal (1852-1899) was a popular Huntsville madam who was known for her generosity. At her death she donated her home to be the first public hospital in Huntsville.
.
Mary Chambers Bibb (1816-1835) died shortly after her marriage. She is rumored to be buried in her wedding dress sitting in a rocking chair.

Construction of The First National Bank building in Huntsville, Alabama began in 1835. The marble covered, Greek Revivial building sits on the limestone bluff where John Hunt, one of the city's first settlers, is said to have built his log cabin in 1805. Built at a cost of $76,000, the bank remained operational as a bank for around 175 years. The bluff it sits on is also above Big Spring, the original water source that Huntsville was built around. This area is now Big Spring Park.
.
The building was built by trained artisans who were slaves of the bank's architect, George Steele. The building represented a shift from Federal style architecture for North Alabama and for George Steele. He drew inspiration from a trip to Washington, D.C. and Charlottesville, Virginia. The availibility of credit from the original bank, the State Bank of Huntsville, further fueled the land rush known as Alabama Fever. #historyhsv #ihearthsv #southernreverie

The kiss of sunset. I took this photo about 30 years ago when I was new to photography. The sun was setting and shadows were falling over the forest floor. I saw this leaf still lit by the sun and fell to the ground on my stomach. By the time I found a composition, adjusted my settings and focused (this was before autofocus) the sunlight had moved almost all the way across the leaf. I caught a sliver of direct sunlight before it was gone. The whole experience took about 45 seconds.

Hello! We're @southernreverie and we're so excited to be taking over today as part of Huntsville's History Month! Come along today as we explore Huntsville, Alabama. ❤️
.
Burritt on the Mountain started as the 167 acre estate of Dr. William Henry Burritt. His X-shaped mansion is still on the site. Visit @southernreverie for some history on the mansion. When Dr. Burritt died in 1955 he donated his house and property to the city of Huntsville and it became the city's first museum. Now, in addition to the house, the open-air museum on Round Top Mountain includes a number of 19th-century rural Alabama structures. These buildings were added in the interest of historical preservation and to provide for re-enactment of this time period for educational purposes. The history museum includes the Joel Eddins House, the oldest dcomented building in the state. Other buildings include 1800's farmhouses and and 1884 church.
.
When you visit the museum you can also take in the views of Huntsville and on a clear day can see all the way to the Tennessee River and NASA's rockets.
.
Burritt on the Mountain provides historical education including classes in the newly completed Dorothy Davidson Rosenwald Schoolhouse. Living history interpreters dressed in period clothing demonstrate life in 1800's Alabama.

Four years after the Civil War, in 1865, William Henry Burritt was born in Huntsville, Alabama. Following in his father's and grandfather's foosteps, he became a physician, graduating from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1890. Dr. Burritt had three marriages, two ended in death and the final in divorce. He lived in Huntsville for many years, then moved to St. Louis. He returned to Huntsville in 1933 after obtaining 22 patents for his rubber tire inventions. In Huntsville, he began construction of Burritt Mansion, an X-shaped mansion drawing on many architectrual styles, at the top of Round Top Mountain. Attracted to the healthy spring water and mountain air, he built the home on 167 acres which had virtually impassible roads at the time.
.
The house that you visit today is the second one on the site. The first one Dr. Burritt built burned to the ground on the same day he moved in, June 6, 1936. The second home was completed in 1938, still in the unusual X shape but much more fireproof. However, both houses used 2,200 bails of wheat straw as insultation. Dr. Burritt lived in his mountaintop home until his death in 1955 at the age of 86. He left the mansion to the city of Huntsville to become the city's first museum.
.
There are several accounts as to why the home was built in an X shape. One is that it was to provide every room with a beautiful view and cross-ventilation. On your visit today, you will certainly find beautiful views and on a clear day can see all the way to the Tennessee River and NASA's rockets. #southernreverie

All of the shots taken by me on the beach over the course of the past two evenings. It truly was an amazing experience and I met some wonderful people out on the beach who had some good advice and even encouragement towards what I am posting and what the message of it all is. So... what is the message? The message is to make sure you see positivity in whatever you can. When all you can see is the death, famine, disease... all things negative... look for the positive somewhere else! Even if it means going to the beach alone to get some sunset pictures, make the most out of what you have! God put you here for a reason and it’s up to you to fulfill that purpose. So... the message... go explore, adventure, discover, find the positive. #positive #beach #board #ocean #God #adventure #discover #explore #purpose #message #sunset #reflection #thisisalabama #ouralabama #sweethomealabama #alabamanow #alabamasocial #thealabamabeta #alabamathebeautiful
