Spinception: don’t most designers come to a book signing and end up trying out an e-spinner? Karen Whooley took the shop’s floor model of the Device for a test drive during our spin-in today and was super-impressed by the portability, the range of capabilities, and how almost immediately consistent her singles were. (Interested? Just ask Lindsey the next time you’re in! It only takes us a couple of minutes to set it up and get it ready to go for demos.)
I’ve been trying to focus on things that make me happy. I’ve been hoarding this “Hummingbird” gradient from Fiber Artemis for a while, but I’m now spinning it for warp. My new bag from @chickenbootsusa is holding the entire project in one place, and it’s making me happy as I spin.
This modular Akerworks spindle system is even better than I thought: There's a hook which can be covered, it can be top or bottom whorl, plus the various size/weights of whorls. Look how many DIFFERENT spindle shapes I can make with ONE shaft. #spinning#DropSpindle#Akerworks#crafty
My Spinzilla finishes. About 6 ounces total. The one on the left is a chain ply, and I’m expecting about 400 yards of fingering. The one on the left is a two-ply and I’m expecting about 250 yards of light fingering. Magical special Spinzilla math would indicate I definitely passed the goal of one mile. I’ll wind, measure, wash, and thwack them tomorrow after I get home from class.
My pocketful of fluffy fun on the way into today’s Guild meeting, then swipe for a shot of the spin in progress. Today I was enjoying this set up in low whorl mode - works better for seated spinning, I think. Anyone up for a toddler haircut? ‘Cause that’s where I’m headed next. It’s a coin toss whether this’ll be calm or traumatic.
Dewy delights! We had a super cool foggy morning here in Knoxville, giving us some extra dewy grass around the shop. Here’s a little spindle bouquet - also to show that we’re not just “all-Lotus-all-the-time,” that our oldie-but-goodie Geranium styles got a redesign as well. These new integrated hub whorls are sweet, just somehow a little more like themselves than were the previous versions.
What’s this?? A visiting wheel? 😄🌀💕 It’s been silent this week because we’ve had some special company! I finally got to meet my lovely friend @classysquidfiberco in person after years of kindred spiriting it up. 💗 Amanda and her husband have spent the summer making their way around the country on a super epic road-trip and you should definitely check out @alpacainstitute if you want a peek at their adventures! Super awesome. 🚌🏞🎉 They were able to spend a few days with us right at the end of their journey and it was such a delightful time! Swipe for smiling friends and a very confused doggo. We tried to get her to look at the camera but the self timer function just did not compute... 😂📸🐕 Thanks for making us one of your stops, guys! Great memories made. 💞 #bestfiberfriends#craftyfriendsarethebest#classysquidfiberco
Spindle photos should be more glamorous than this, I know, with fewer garbage cans and vacuum cords in the shot... but we were having too much fun to stop and pose it properly :-) This was low whorl spinning with a Medium Lotus whorl on an 8” shaft, super stable and just spins all day long.
This is a week of some Very Exciting News.... we are now officially a dealership for The Device by @questionableorigin ! This e-spinner, developed in conjunction with @abbysyarns , is phenomenally versatile, quiet, portable, and functional. Been curious about how it works? Or how easy it is to set up/break down? Or anything else? Swing by and check it out in person - and if you’ve had your eyes on one and order soon, you could even have it for the holidays (or St. Distaff’s Day... or Madrona 2019...) Swipe to see the interior as it packs up, then again to see Lindsey set it up in a time-lapse video.
On Friday @critterknits gave me an early birthday gift of some beautiful BFL fiber from @mishasobsessions and I felt inspired to do a little spinning yesterday! I spun the first bobbin in the background and I remembered that I had some coordinating fiber. When I took @frostyarn spinning class and carding bar in July she made beautiful Frida Kahlo batts. I spun that up and I will ply them together (bobbin in front). The Frida batt is sparkly with all the beautiful add ins that @frostyarn includes! If you swipe you can see photos of the fiber and batt before I spun them. Stay tuned for the finished yarn! #handspunyarn#wemakeyarn#hansencraftsminispinner#akerworks#titsoutcollective#mishasobsessions#frostyarn
Every time I use Malabrigo Nube I fall in love with it all over again and wonder why I don’t use it way more often. I’ve tried maaany sources for 100% merino fiber and none of them create a single for me quite like Nube. It’s got such a... marshmallow-y draft if that makes any descriptive sense at all. 🤔😝 The singles created can be smooth and dense (as is my preference), but they also manage to still be puffy somehow. And in a very specific way unlike any other fiber I’ve spun. Also this Plomo colorway is such a lovely and exciting neutral! ... Aaanyways. I’ll stop going on and on, but seriously. LOVE this stuff. 😆😂💘🌀🐑 #malabrigonubeappreciationpost#mondayspunday#spinningWIP
Edited to address the one con I can think of - I have had a few issues with braids arriving slightly felted in parts in the past, but it’s been probably 3-4 years since the last time that’s happened to me personally. Seems like they’re taking much better care now! 💕
Day 11 • #sewphotohop • The creative process • My creative process lately has been inspired by working backwards from materials, to projects. Limiting the materials or working with my stash has brought so many new ideas that I would not have otherwise thought of. You might not think that limiting materials would bring creativity but it really has for me. 😉 I also find that working across multiple mediums has brought inspiration to my creative process as well. From knitting to sewing to spinning wool, each element intersects the other to bring inspiration and a continual push for me, creatively. ❤️🐑✂️ @houseofpinheiro #sewphotohop2018#oakbluedesigns
Monday Mood: Indecisive Edition. 🤔💭 Second bobbin... done! But should I add another single to make this a 3-ply? I can’t tell if that greyish Nube will mute things down too much or actually ADD some nice contrast for the brights to pop. Hmmm... I’ve had it go both ways before! 🤷🏻♀️ The other factor is that adding another ply would probably make the final yarn a solid DK/worsted weight which I would be pretty happy about. Choices choices! 🌀💕 #doublebobbinshot#spinningWIP#mondayspunday
Taking smart breaks is important. This afternoon I'm spinning & listening to an audiobook before I dive deep into pattern writing revisions. Fiber by #helloyarn (Shetland wool top, colour Fife, Feb 2016 club--I traded something with a good friend for it, the colours are gorgeous). Bobbin by #akerworks . Wheel is a #spinolution queen bee (I'm the third keeper of this wheel I believe we've been together for a while now). And as always I refer to my #goalbook for notes on how I want to make this yarn (chain ply).
?!?! Have y’all ever seen such a gorgeous bobbin pic? Gahhhh! I’m floored. Thanks for sharing, @nelago1! #Repost :
Phew. 145g of singles down, 145g to go. And then plying. Should be finished with this project sometime next decade. Fiber is from @fiberopticyarns and the bobbin showing it off so well is of course from @akerworks #spinnersofinstagram#handspun#akerworks#gradientyarn#somuchlefttodo
Happiness is when your new @akerworks bobbins show up the same day as your club fiber from @intothewhirled 🎉💃🏻 The latter will not be shown as to keep the surprise for other club members! But all the 😍! .
Well this was a fun ply! 🌀🎉 Both fibers were actually relatively soft in color except for the one braid having a couple runs of bright yellow. Together they ended up became something pretty striking! 🤩 And while I don’t really intend to spin yarn at this speed again, it’s interesting to see how significantly less time spent resulted in two sloppy singles that actually balanced themselves out quite well overall! I think this yarn will be perfect for my inevitable autumn vibes cast on that will be taking place in a few weeks here... 😁😍🍂 #soonmypretty#bobbinshot#plyingyarn
I think two 4oz braids spun up in two evenings might be a speed record for me. Those are pretty thin singles too! 😂🌀💦 I wanted to put my weekend wheel repairs through their paces and they’ve definitely passed the test now. Time to ply! Aw yiss. 🤩 I’m especially looking forward to the stretch of bright yellow that’s hidden within that back bobbin. It’s a pretty wild Wednesday over here, guys... 😜😂🎉 #doublebobbinshot#wednesdayWIP#plyingtime
