Had a lovely meal at Afghan Darbar in Lajpat Nagar, which was once Punjabi dominated, now overrun by Afghans and we're so thankful that they have :) Lajpat Nagar's now fairly well known for quality Afghan food and the owners of Afghan Darbar, who also own Mazar restaurant were one of the earlier entrants into LN.
We reached the restaurant by around 1030pm and the kitchen was finished with all but three things. So with no choice, we'd to order these. Thankfully, they turned out just fine.
The Chopan Kebab is the Afghan version to the Indian Burra kebab. After you've had the Chopan, it's that much harder to go back and see a good Burra in the same light as before.
That Chopan at AD was outstanding. All meat and little masala. The flavour, texture and doneness were all perfect.
The Mantu at AD was classic. Steamed mutton mince dumplings topped with a combination of some cooked mince, chana dal, wee bit of tomato and splashes of hung yoghurt. I really like the Mantu as a dumpling. It stands out on its own; not trying to copy the finer Chinese versions and yet is a bit more sophisticated than the Tibetan/Nepali versions and way more than the Tandoori momos developed on the streets of South Delhi. Inspite of this slightly-more-than-average sorta sophistication, the Mantu holds on to a certain rusticity that one tends to associate with Afghan food. That's why I like it so much.
The third dish that was available was the Qubuli Uzbeki, a rice dish with supposed Uzbek influences that's now, I'm guessing is part n' parcel of daily Afghan restaurant cuisine. It was flavoured with sweetened juliennes of carrot and fried puffed-up raisins, which on first glance looked deceptively similar to what we call Kabuli chana. The meat along with the Kubuli was very very special. It was a Gol-Boti from shoulder part of a kid goat. Very tender and not thready at all (no raeshe I mean). It was meat cooked so perfectly well. The rice was on the sweeter side, but flavourful and tasty.
I was full by now, up to my gills; but was still craving for more. Goin' back to Afghan Darbar very soon 😍😍😍 #Afghan#AfghanFood#Delhi#LajpatNagar#AfghanDarbar#DelhiFood#Food
