We’ve had a long day of sleep training with Jacob so I told myself we didn’t need to have to have a perfect dinner tonight.

That being said, Jess took some delicious @officialfarmboy pierogies and made them pretty and cute with tomatoes from our garden... but I was too worn out to remember to take a picture.

So instead, here’s something pretty! This is a strawberry flower. Until this summer, when we planted strawberries for the first time, I never even knew strawberries had flowers! I have been in love with these little cuties. It’s two stages of lovely!

I am tempted to say ‘We are trying to sleep train Jacob,’ but I want to be positive and manifest this!

I love nursing Jacob to sleep. I feel it’s something we have earned with all our difficulties getting started with nursing. But now that he’s 4 months old and still hasn’t slept through the night, it’s time to get serious.

We’re trying Sleep Sense by recommendation of the amazing and supportive warrior Mamas in our Mom Therapy group. So far it’s going pretty well but it requires two adults, a lot of patience and communication, and some sleep sacrifice.

To compensate, I am taking extra herbs to nourish my whacked out adrenals, trying to keep my gut in line, and bringing ear plugs and a thank you note to our basement tenants 🙈

I am listening to this book and learning a lot; however, I do not agree with the author on the need for supplementing #estrogen or #testosterone . I went through #menopause back in 2015. It seemed early to me, but the doctor said it is actually a sign of good health. Blood tests showed I was low on vitamin D (due to so much sunscreen for my fair skin I’m sure) and slightly low in everything—BLOOD TESTS SHOW I HAVE BALANCED MYSELF PERFECTLY NOW WITH ONLY HERBS, EZYMES, NATURAL REMEDIES AND EATING MORE GREENS. I will be posting soon on #hormones as a series of tips for women. I have zero hair loss, zero hot flashes, sleep 8 hours every night, have never felt happier or had more energy and have never been thinner. I can tell my libido is the same as it has always been. What a little creativity, determination and fun can create! 
These beauties were baked by my son & his friends this week.  They wanted to have a baking contest even though I really didn't have enough ingredients for them.  They were determined and went ahead.  They tasted as good as they look!! This is what they used: 
raw cocoa powder, cinnamon, pumpkin seed powder, flax seeds, coconut flour and 1-2 tbsp gluten free flour mix (that’s all I had left), 2 eggs, olive oil, almond milk, coconut sugar and frozen berries.  I’m pretty sure they each used all of them in varying amounts.

::MEDITATION:: I have been enjoying my little hiatus so far. I didn’t realise how much I needed to pause & #heal until I actually did so. My little #adrenals are pooped, which happens with #chronicpain #autoimmunedisease & #prednisone use.. I was on that awful stuff for 5 years solid as a kid, never again! Above the kidneys are two glands called the adrenals which release cortisol when they’re stressed. Adrenal fatigue is when these glands become stressed too much and produce too much cortisol. Symptoms include anxiety, dark circles under eyes, dizziness, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, and getting out of breath from walking up stairs.

Yesterday I posted about WHY sleep deprivation is TERRIBLE for your hormones and general health and well-being. But today, I want to address a few things that might be causing those sleep problems.

Sure, some of us can’t sleep because of problems that are temporary and situational like noisy neighbors, a newborn baby (new mommas- I feel you!), a weird schedule, etc.. And of course, I encourage you to do what can you can as soon as you can to alleviate the disruption to your sleep and get back to getting roughly 8 hours nightly. But, for the rest of you who are trying but just can’t seem to fall asleep or stay that way, here’s a brief overview of what MIGHT be causing it.

1. Low Progesterone- A lot of women, MANY years before they begin to go through menopause but often during and after menopause can suffer from sleep issues because of low progesterone which tends to be calming and can help induce sleep.

2. Low estrogen OR testosterone- If you suffer from night sweats you may also be low in estrogen and/or testosterone. These hormones, when low or high, can also cause mood issues that can cause excess anxiety which, of course, can keep you up.
_
3. Low serotonin-So you might have heard of serotonin and know that low levels can lead to anxiety and depression but did you know your body converts serotonin to melatonin at night? Yep. So if your serotonin is low, so is your melatonin. Serotonin can be low for a lot of reasons (that’s a whole different post)

4. Not enough exposure to natural light- I know! We’re supposed to shun the sun less we want skin cancer and wrinkles. BUT the less sun exposure you get, the less efficiently you convert serotonin to melatonin and that can make you sleep less than optimal.

It’s been 21 DAYS without coffee ☕️... (I never thought I’d ever say that).

I used to go to sleep thinking about coffee the next morning... I even added all.the.things to it, MCT, collagen, ghee... I’ve had coffee daily since University days (I’m talking 15 years)... I love the taste, aroma, the ritual, the conversations had over a cup and since kids, the fact that it was MY cup of deliciousness that they never bugged me for.

My body has been screaming at me for the last 6 months. I’d been continually feeling worse, not better, my anxiety was becoming almost unmanageable, I was short and snapping at the kids all the time, I wasn’t sleeping well, my thyroid/adrenals were tanking.

COFFEE is a small piece of the puzzle but it’s made a HUGE impact for me not starting my day buzzing on coffee. And I can totally say that I don’t miss those feelings of heightened anxiety, rage, dependency and shitty sleep.

The word “thyroid” comes from a greek word meaning shield-like. It produces hormones which regulate the body’s basal metabolic rate (BMR). It is one of the seven endocrine glands in the body. The thyroid gland is associated with the throat chakra; representing communication and expression.

Chinese medicine relates thyroid imbalances to the kidneys. it is known as the water organ, but it goes deeper. there is a yin and yang aspect to the kidney. The yin aspect houses our sacred fluids, whereas the yang aspect houses the ministerial fire. Hypothyroidism (underactive) is associated with lack of kidney yang, while hyperthyroidism denotes a lack of kidney yin (overactive). Kidney yin deficiency patterns - dry mouth and throat, hot sensation in palms and chest, night sweats, and constipation. Emphasize nourishing and and moistening foods - millet, barley, tofu, dark beans, melons, dark colored berries, and spirulina. 
Kidney yang deficiency patterns - soreness and coldness in the lower back and knees, fatigue, low libido, and puffiness. Emphasize warming and energizing foods - quinoa, walnuts, garlic, onions, chives, leeks, cinnamon, fenugreek, pepper, and ginger. 
Can you see how these patterns reflect the nature of yin and yang? Kidney yin deficiency is a depletion of fluids, often from stress and heat of liver and heart. Kidney yang deficiency is a weakness of our vital force that supports the body’s metabolism. 
It is possible to have both yin and yang deficiency of kidney. If this is the case one should nourish build the blood, and drain any existing heat from the liver and heart meridians. Astragalus is an excellent herb if you aren’t sure where to start. 
In either case, make sure your diet includes enough of the trace minerals iodine and selenium - both are required for a healthy thyroid. Try adding some kelp to your food for an excellent source of iodine and other important minerals. Brazil nuts contain high amounts of selenium. Just eating a few daily can keep those selenium levels up! Remember that as a chakra, the thyroid is all about communication and expression; do not restrict truth in your words or in your life!

What does adrenal stress look like in a little one?
They are constantly in fight or flight mode.  Aren’t happy eating or after eating.  Don’t like to be put down, colicy, maybe have improper digestion and are constipated or not sleeping more than a few hours. They look tense all the time and are easily woken.  Also might react to foods. And have rashes. These are basic survival responses, but they aren’t normal to be on 100% of the time.
Simply alleviating the pressure from the brain through craniopathy work (taking pressure off the brain by moving the bones into their proper place)  can calm the baby down, normalize the signal and stop them from continually thinking they are in danger.

My health story had to change once again a little over 3 years ago when my weight got out of control, my hormones went on the fritz, and all doctors or specialists could tell me was that I was getting older, maybe I had gained muscle or to “keep an eye on it.”

I changed my health story again by becoming my own health detective, running functional lab testing, connecting with others who had experience this too, and by investigating environmental factors such as toxic mold which were creating chaos inside my body.  As a result, I’ve lost weight, I have zero hormonal issues and I’m in remission for Hashimoto’s (an autoimmune thyroid disorder).

I took this lab test towards the end of July.  It was an at home saliva + blood test.  Tested for hormones + thyroid levels + cortisol.  I had to fill 4 different tubes with saliva at different times throughout the day.  The blood test was a single finger prick done in the morning. 
The results are in:
• Elevated cortisol 3 out of the 4 times of day. 👎🏼
• Low Progesterone. Most likely due to being converted to cortisol. 👎🏼
• Thyroid, DHEA, Estrogen, Testosterone were all within normal ranges. 👍🏼
I will do a separate post about treatment plan.

“I can sleep when I’m dead!” “The early bird gets the worm.” Ever said either of those things to yourself? Or do you no longer have to say these things to yourself because you run on four to five hours of sleep pretty much every night? You’re used to it. You don’t need sleep, right? That’s for lazy, unmotivated people who don’t have things to do. You’re way more productive than the average bear.

That’s what I used to tell myself, too. In my early and mid-twenties I would wake up extra early to get my workouts in, train a client at the gym at 5:00 or 6:00am, then go to class or work for the rest of the day, catch my second workout in the afternoon, maybe teach a fitness class as well, then go home and stay up until 11:00pm or midnight working on school. It didn’t get any better once I graduated and started working shifts at the hospital. I spent a good decade of my life getting an average of about four to six hours of sleep per night and wondering why I always felt like crap, why I couldn’t lose weight, and why I always felt like on the verge of a nervous breakdown on top of numerous other health problems.

People seem to wear their lack of sleep like a badge of honor. In our society, overtime and eighty-hour weeks are signs of the motivated, the high achievers, and the people that get ahead. No wonder I never considered my lack of sleep to be a problem. Well, turns out skipping sleep really isn’t getting any of us ahead. It’s making us sick. It’s making us depressed. It’s making us fat and aging us at an accelerated rate.

How? Chronically getting inadequate amounts of sleep causes:

⚪️ Decreases in insulin sensitivity
⚪️ Impaired glucose tolerance
⚪️ Increased cravings
⚪️ Lower leptin and increased ghrelin levels
