*Meteor Garden* has been my guilty pleasure for the past week. Adapted from the Japanese shōgo manga *Boys Over Flowers*, this Chinese drama is oddly addictive.
When Dong Shancai, a simple girl from a middle-class background enrols into the prestigious Ming De University in Shanghai, she inevitably has a bad run-in with the F4 : a male clique of the four most popular, wealthy and influential guys of the university. But Dong Shancai is not a blithering groupie. She is steady, wise, with her head firmly on her shoulders, will take no one’s abuse and has the will power and sass to stand up for what is right. Meteor Garden revolves around how she soon earns the respect of the F4 while having a love-hate relationship with the hot-headed leader of the group, Daoming Si.
I was going to abandon the series after two or three episodes when Daoming Si acted like a brutal, abusive a**HOLE. I wanted to slap the boy silly but thankfully, he has enough fierce female characters (special mention for his badass sister here) in his life who will take no nonsense from the arrogant twerp and are quite free with their fists and fury to keep him in line. Daoming’s growth as a character is endearing. He isn’t another Edward Cullen or a Christian Gray (I would have kicked his tiny tush for those facts alone). He is sincere, blunt, snotty, narcissistic, a tad childish but with his heart always in the right place.
Yet another factor that I really liked was the portrayal of the F4. For a while there, I was fairly certain that these freakishly tall, pale, impeccably attired boys were closet vampires. Turns out that they are not. Whew. Instead, they were polite, intuitive, respectful towards women and turned out to be the best kind of friends for Dong Shancai.I love how they rally around her in a sticky situation. We need more friends like that.
There are a lot of progressive life lessons incorporated into the serial dealing with frenemies, haters, bullying, self-respect and personal growth which makes it a pleasant watch. Touches of madcap humour, a bit of soul-searching and a brand new canvas, ambience wise also work for me.
Netflix, you have me firmly enthralled.
#throwback to when Moki first started playing in the pool and making nose bubbles!
