Courtesy Post ‼️‼️ DUKE
I met Duke while he was being fostered by a shelter volunteer. He could only foster him for a short time (which helps out shelters so much with space) and Duke has been at the shelter for a while now. Both @the_canine_republic And myself are offering FREE private training sessions to anyone who ADOPTS or Long-term fosters DUKE. 💗🐾👏🏼 Here is what volunteers have to say about Duke...
. . .
5 years old, male pitbull, 65lbs.
LA - East Valley shelter
14409 Vanowen St.
Vam Nuys, CA 91405
. . .
He is super sweet, gentle, mellow and loves people. He has has been stuck back in medical for over a month because he has a slight limp in his back leg. He has luxating patella in his knee and needs medical attention. The shelter is overfull right now so he is in danger.
. . .
Here is what I learned from fostering him:
Crate trained (although when his knee was acting up I was concerned about him being able to turn around in the crate so I left him alone in my apartment a few times and he did fine.)
Good on the leash.
He will come when he is called... he kind of knows sit.
. . .
He doesn’t jump on people at all... he is respectful and not needy but loves to be petted.
He didn’t show aggression but needs guidance and to learn some social skills around other dogs.
He had no food aggression at all.. He is a pleasure to have around and a wonderful, sweet companion.
. . .
*drum roll* thank you for all your guesses! Today I‘m going to reveal the findings of Toffee‘s DNA Test🤗 Our guesses were: some kind of collie (a herding dog at least like @rumaenischehundeliebe guessed😊) and maybe a sheperd dog. The test revealed: Toffee is a super mutt😁 loads of different breeds are mixed. Those that could be identified are: Belgian Tervuren (sheperd dog with long fur), Mudi (Hungarian herding dog) and Jack Russell😁 @leedalarue guessed most of it, congrats👏👏👏 the rest of the breeds could only be guessed. We definitely see the sheperd dog in her fur (structure and densitiy, coloring) and the Jack Russell in her face (small face, big round eyes) & stubbornness and the Mudi most in her behavior. She runs, lurks etc very similarly to my sisters shelties. 🤗 what do you think? (Swipe right for the pedigree!) Training:
Immediately after the seminar, we revoked a few of Toffees privileges, like no bed or couch. Toffee was acting like it was her right to be on there sometimes, thats why we did that☺️ after a few weeks we watered that down and she was allowed on the sofa when we okay‘ed it. So she can‘t just jump on it, but has to ask and get the okay from us (we deny it more often than not right now). She asks by looking at us and resting her head on the sofa for example. The motto of our training style, simply put, is: everything you can forbid, you can also allow. So if she respects the no sofa rule, we can also allow her up. Likewise: if she respects no playing/running, then we can also allow her and motivate her to do just that. It just has to be controllable☺️ .
Say hello to my #barklords !

Oh man, I am so in love with my family! Look at those great kids and that wonderful and handsome husband and father! They were relaxing in the grass after church waiting for big brother to get out of his youth group and I snapped this perfect picture. #thisisreal#family#adoptionrocks#mine
This. Text. Is. Everything. His timing is miraculous as I needed to hear this more than ever right now. I “inherited” my sarcasm from my dad but I also learned forgiveness, compassion, and when to admit mistakes from him. Xoxo Love you dad! #fathersday#adoptionrocks#twodads
International adoption was closed in Guatemala in 2008 as a result of systemic corruption and lack of regulation. When you combine the closure of international adoption with extreme poverty, lack of family services, and a completely overwhelmed child protection system, you have the perfect storm for an orphan crisis of epidemic proportions. Up until now, the response by both Guatemalans and Westerners alike has been to build more orphanages. While these homes have most certainly aided in providing a temporary solution for vulnerable children, they have also created a false safety net for the government, the local church, and faith-based organizations.
The problem is the majority of these homes are over-capacity, understaffed, and simply unable to meet the individualized needs of the children in their care. We write that with a lump in our throats because we know this from six years of very personal experience.
Guatemala (and the world, really) is at a crucial turning point in the way that vulnerable children and families are cared for. Story is privileged to be fighting on the front lines, hand in hand with the local church and government. Stay tuned, ya’ll!
I love these workouts!!! They are about 30 minutes. That’s it!!! And...the best part...I only have to do 4 per week. Now, don’t get me wrong. These workouts are kicking my booty, but last Monday on chest and back day I could only do about 10 push-ups on my knees. Today I did 15 on my knees. I’ll take that as a win!! LOL!!
I just called to see whether we can start any part of the adoption application process within the next three and a half years- info night, training session, anything and- no. We have to wait five years from being cancer free until we can do a single thing. Urgh.
Oprah give me strength and patience throughout the next 171 weeks/ 1197 days.
Also- thank you so much SO SO much for the amazing comments of support on my last few posts. You guys are the BEST. There’s always a risk that posting updates about all of this comes across as ‘fishing for attention’ or sympathy, but it’s genuinely not my intent.
Anyway, love you x
This sign hangs in Soren and merricks room. We felt it was fitting as they are both true miracles.
Tonight as I was trying to find the words to explain the last few hours, I looked up. There is nothing part of these boys lives that have not blown me out of the water. It was if God was speaking right to me “there will be miracles”.
2 weeks ago, tears streamed my face. I felt like merrick getting adopted before school starts again had become a distant idea.
Today, I got an email asking if B and I can sign adoption papers on Thursday. (This does not mean finalization but this is the last step). You guys! Miracles can happen. I was floored, I knew it was a possibility after a talk last week but basically assumed it was nothing.
Merricks story always renews my faith. The mountains that have been flattened to make this boy a Bowles has been incredible. Thank you all for continuously walking alongside us.. and in Few weeks, we’ll celebrate the joy of adoption with all of you
So we are a point now where we are thinking "next steps." Alyssa is going on 2 and a half, and we are moving our household plans to be more family centric instead of Jason always being at work away from home.
This brings us to a very carefully reached decision that we are ready to start the process of adopting another child so Alyssa can have a brother or sister. This time, we won't go through an adoption agency due to the overwhelming costs involved, but instead hope to network with friends, family, and as many people as we can to hopefully find a child in need of a forever family/home. This will not be an easy process, but are confident that if it is meant to be, it will be.
If you know of anyone looking for a loving adoptive family who would be willing to talk to us, please keep us in mind!!
It takes a village.
Sweet Briar Paige has touched the lives of so many. Adoption is love. It’s the ultimate gift bore from the ultimate sacrifice. Briar get all the love from all the mamas 💕 Briar is love.
She just received this sweet homemade blanket and first Bible from her biological grandma. I know it was a labor of love and we will treasure it always!
Seriously he kills me. He’s so not photogenic lol 🙀😻🙀😻
Owen is ready for adoption peeps! Consult forms at www.desertpawsrescue.org ~Foster mom LauRen ☀️🍉🌴
My beautiful baby girl turned 3 today. I cannot thank the Lord enough for giving us this precious little thing.
Adopting out of foster care seems to be frowned on...people turn up their noses and share quickly, “I could never do that because I could never give the baby back” as if you are a monster who loves to attach to children and then lose them.
Every child deserves a family willing to attach to them even though they might not be able to keep them. #endrant#kandalyngreenphotography#adoptivemom#adoptionfromfostercare#adoptionrocks
C O M M U N I T Y .
One thing I’ve learned and have been reminded of throughout this entire adoption process is that we have been created to be in community with one another.
We have been blown away by not just the immense support from family and friends but the fact that people we may not talk to on a regular basis are in this with us! Community matters. Relationship matters. People matter. The ONE matters. We aren’t meant to do this life alone... and when we step out and share our dreams, our hopes, our heart, our needs, we allow space for community to be formed around us.
If someone is willing to share a struggle, a need, or a dream with you... be quick to encourage and speak life. The adoption process is long.. it’s at times stressful and hard. It takes patience, it takes endurance, it takes understanding. I can’t begin to describe how those around us, our tribe, our village, have encouraged us and spurred us on. Thank you to everyone who gave AND shared encouragement and spoke life into this little girls life already. The process isn’t over yet but man is it totally worth it!
We are getting so much closer to reaching our goal.. which means we are getting so much closer to bringing our little girl home!
Speaking of being grateful #seelastpost , I am so blessed to have these two. 👨🏻👶🏻Being away truly makes you realize how lucky you really are. Marriage is hard. Parenthood is hard. But there are no two humans I’d rather be on this journey with. @weisdad- thank you for being such a hard working and loving dada. 💙#mateohenry and I love you more than words. #happyfathersday 👪
With all the things that are out there today from gadgets to electronics we find it important that we make the time to introduce our son to the more simpler things in life. Whatever happened to being outside playing in the dirt and using your imagination…?!?
