day 65 of #100daysofandnotor : “fuck you, pay me AND sorry would you please pay me?”
as an independent creator, it can be difficult to ask for money. it’s something especially scary for me, being relatively new to it and already hyper self-conscious about charging for my work at all. but a lot of time and effort goes into creative work, and it’s important not just for me to recognize my worth, but also to do my part in setting the precedent for creators who come after me to also be paid what they’re worth.
as much as i try to channel my sasha fierce attitude of “🖕🏽fuck you, pay me 🖕🏽” i get very shy and soft spoken when it actually comes time to talk money. money is a mechanism for representing value, and trying to prescribe a value for my work that others will agree to is downright terrifying. all the insecurities come racing through my head: you’re not that good, anyone could draw that, [other way more talented artist] only charges $X, you’re not a professional, who would pay that much for this…
it’s important to ask for what you’re worth. others may pass judgment on that, but be confident in your value. if you find that no one is buying your stuff, then take that as input – but ultimately it is wholly YOUR decision if you want to adjust your price or fee. my friend @sailorhg has a great thread on twitter about this subject: if something an indie creator charges is too expensive for you, you don’t have to buy it AND you shouldn’t tell them they charge too much.

I may finish all of my illustrations and graphics on the computer but I still start by sketching out everything with a pencil and paper. I also need a physical planner to write out my daily to do list, I don’t know why but I just can’t commit to going 100% digital. There’s something so magical about holding a real book when reading and it’s satisfying when you get to cross off those items on your checklist. Who’s with me? 🙋🏽♀️📝📚✏️
