I Chronicles 1 “Abraham fathered Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel/Jacob” (v34). Chronicles, a retelling of Israel’s history (like Kings, but from a different perspective) begins with a genealogy that establishes the nation of Israel’s descent from Adam (v1) through Noah and Shem and down to Abraham and his children. This account would have especially encouraged the Israelites who found themselves captive in Babylon (II Kings 24-25) and struggled to hold on to their identity as God’s covenant people in a foreign land.
God knows our hearts need assurance and comfort as we live as His redeemed people in the world: “the Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16). -Deborah Galyen #NCManna

LAND OF PROMISE
Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?” But Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there. The LORD GOD OF HEAVEN, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give THIS LAND,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there.” So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter. - Genesis 24:1-9

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the LAND OF PROMISE as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with ISAAC and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is GOD. - Hebrews 11:8-10 .

EVERY GOOD AND PERFECT GIFT

Then they came to the place of which GOD had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the LORD called to him from HEAVEN and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you FEAR GOD, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, THE-LORD-WILL-PROVIDE; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” - Genesis 22:9-14 .

My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to WISDOM, and apply your heart to UNDERSTANDING; yes, if you cry out for DISCERNMENT, and lift up your voice for UNDERSTANDING, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the FEAR OF THE LORD, and find the KNOWLEDGE OF GOD. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path. - Proverbs 2:1-9 .

THE SONG OF THE LAMB
So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which GOD had told him. Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.” So Abraham took the WOOD of the burnt offering and LAID IT ON Isaac his SON; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the LAMB for a burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “My son, GOD WILL PROVIDE for HIMSELF THE LAMB for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together. - Genesis 22:3-8 .

The next day John saw JESUS coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The LAMB OF GOD who takes away the sin of the world! And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the SPIRIT descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon HIM. I did not know HIM, but HE who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the SPIRIT descending, and remaining on HIM, this is HE who baptizes with the HOLY SPIRIT.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the SON OF GOD.” - John 1:29,32-34 .
They sing the song of Moses, the servant of GOD, and the song of the LAMB, saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, LORD GOD ALMIGHTY! Just and true are Your ways, O KING of the saints! Who shall not fear YOU, O LORD, and glorify Your name? For YOU alone are HOLY. For all nations shall come and WORSHIP before YOU, for Your judgments have been manifested.” - Revelation 15:3-4 .

I was glancing through my journal and came across this quote: “God will test you with obedience, He will not test you with evil.” As I’m pondering that and considering all of the excuses we humans come up with not to obey it’s absolutely astounding. I have to hand it to us; we really are great at convincing ourselves that it’s ok, it’s ok this time, —I already committed to something else— the timing just isn’t right— I will next time— but I’m serving this person over here— but that doesn’t make any sense— I tried that before it didn’t work— I have to do this or that— people will think I’m... —I’m not worthy— I don’t have time— I’m not good enough— I’m not gifted there— I’m not a people person — what will people say—
STOP!! Let’s stop listening to ourselves and start listening to the Lord. That means seeking His will, reading His word, waiting on Him and acting as soon as we are led to do so. It means doing what we are called to do in life, if your a mom, mother, if your a dad father, if your an employee work diligently as unto the Lord. But in all of that let us have ears to hear, let us be tuned in, waiting to hear from Him always. He will not test us with evil, but He will ask for obedience.
I imagine Abraham had a lot of words he could have told himself. A lot of reasons not to take Isaac and head up to sacrifice him. But he chose obedience and he passed the test. Let us endeavor to truly walk in obedience to our mighty King. Let us choose the hard things when He asks, let us take up our crosses. Our lives are hidden in Him. He is worthy of our very lives. Let us walk as living sacrifices!
.
.
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:1-2‬ ‭

DAY 8 { #100daysofthebookofmormon } is #Jacob4 #verses 1, 3-8 in #TheBookofMormon: #AnotherTestamentofJesusChrist
.
"1 . . . I, Jacob, having ministered much unto my people in word, (and I cannot write but a little of my words, because of the difficulty of engraving our words upon plates) .
3 [We write] hoping that our beloved brethren and our children will receive them with thankful hearts, and look upon them that they may learn with joy and not with sorrow, neither with contempt, concerning their first parents.
.
4 For, for this intent have we written these things, that they may know that we knew of Christ, and we had a hope of his glory many hundred years before his coming; and not only we ourselves had a hope of his glory, but also all the holy prophets which were before us.
.
5 Behold, they believed in Christ and worshiped the Father in his name, and also we worship the Father in his name. And for this intent we keep the law of Moses, it pointing our souls to him; and for this cause it is sanctified unto us for righteousness, even as it was accounted unto Abraham in the wilderness to be obedient unto the commands of God in offering up his son Isaac, which is a similitude of God and his Only Begotten Son.
.
6 Wherefore, we search the prophets, and we have many revelations and the spirit of prophecy; and having all these witnesses we obtain a hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea.
.
7 Nevertheless, the Lord God showeth us our weakness that we may know that it is by his grace, and his great condescensions unto the children of men, that we have power to do these things.
.
8 Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God." #joy #ourfirstparents #glory #theyknewofChrist #prophets #worshiptheFather #AbrahamandIsaac #grace #power #revelations #LDS #sharegoodness #imamormon

Reading this morning about sacrifice, interesting perspective by Oswald Chambers how we carry such a negative connotation with the word. “Sacrifice isn’t giving up things, but giving to God with joy the best we have.” What have you hung onto that you haven’t yet offered up to God in sacrifice to Him? #genesis #abrahamandisaac #oswaldchambers #ryanargue #lettinggo #godislove #foolsforchrist
TL;DR - Our Heavenly Father was willing to give up Jesus Christ, Whom He loved dearly, for you and I, who were sinners. That is His great love!
.
“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
Genesis 22:2 NLT
.
When you love something, it is highly unlikely that you would be willing to sacrifice it for someone else.
.
Isaac was a child Abraham loved so much. Abraham has no child even when he was around a hundred years old, but God promised him a son. And finally, Abraham got Isaac. Isaac certainly must have brought great joy to Abraham, and Abraham definitely treasured Isaac a lot. To give up Isaac would definitely have broken his heart. Nevertheless, he did it. .
Abraham gave Isaac, who was, despite being a great blessing to him, still only a mere human, to the Almighty and the Most High. But the Most High gave up His only begotten Son, Whom God the Father loved so dearly, and was divine Himself, for us, sinners, who rebelled against God and His laws. That, my friend, is the amazing, supernatural love of God for us! That is how valuable you are in His eyes! Amen!

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is that of Abraham. He left home with his son with the intention to sacrifice him as a sign of obedience to God. But when he was about to another option was presented to him and he didn’t resist to obey even if it looked differently as planned.
What does obedience look like for you?

Sometimes the Lord asks us to do scary things. Sometimes those things don’t make a lot of sense to us in our carnal minds. I imagine along the 3 day journey to sacrifice his son that Abraham may have experienced fear and doubt. Abraham didn’t allow these feeling to dictate his choices. He chose to faithfully walk forward in full submission to the Lord without an explanation. We may not always understand why the Lord asks us or leads us to do the things He does but we must strive to have a heart of obedience to faithfully do as the Lord asks, even when we are tempted to fear.
Fear is a liar, it can rob us of the blessings the Lord intends for us, it can rob the Lord of glory, and it can paralyze us in fulfilling the great commission. Fear is the opposite of trust and despite how we feel, the Lord has called us to submit ourselves to His leading at all costs. Often times obedience costs us something. But I promise the Lord is good and He desires good things for us so let’s choose obedience. Lets choose to trust Him. He is worthy of our trust!

What is the Lord asking of you? Are you resisting out of fear? I know I have. Let us search our hearts and choose not to fear. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.””
‭‭Joshua‬ ‭1:9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ #fearisaliar #fearnot #obedience

"The binding of Isaac" is a biblical story from #Genesis that has always fascinated me. In 2015 i made this Hand/ #Hamsa #illustration based on the Akedah. .
There are many beautiful artworks dealing with the #Akedah to which i can't even compare 🤣. Here are some!
.
2) #Caravaggio
3) #Rembrandt
4)  #Chagall
5) Giovanni Battista #Tiepolo

But wait.. .
6) Did you know, the story holds many similarities to the #Greek #Mythology story of #Iphigenia who, in one version, is also saved from being sacrificed to a goddess (#Artemis), by her father (#Agamemnon), by an animal (a #deer) in the last moment? 😎
.
Agamemnon was commended by Artemis to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenaia, only then  Artemis would return the winds and his fleet could sail to #Troy (whereto Helen had been "abducted" by Paris and the whole Trojan war was about to go down). .

6) Francois #Perrier : Sacrifice of Iphigenia
7) Mark #Rothko: sacrifice of Iphigenia (1942!)

In Genesis 22 Abraham set an absolutely amazing example to us. What Abraham didn’t know was that God was only testing his faith. God asked Abraham to give his son (Issac) as a sacrifice. (Before Jesus has died on the cross, they offered burnt sacrifices for forgiveness.) Without hesitating the next day Abraham loaded up and went where The Lord asked him to go. He laid his son down and put wood on top of him. He swung the knife to slay his son, and just at the right time, an angel of the Lord appeared and called out “Abraham, Abraham, stop!”
________________________

Abraham had one of the greatest examples of faith because...
________________________

1) He didn’t ask any questions, he did exactly what God asked. He never even hesitated.

2) He trusted that God’s plan was greater than his own. He knew God would take care of him and his son.

3) He put God before everything. He wanted to obey The Lord and nothing less.
_______________________

God test faith all the time! As Christians we should strive to obey God just like Abraham. We may not understand why, but understanding why isn’t our job. God knew exactly what he was doing then and he still does today! -KW♡

"The Sacrifice of Pizza" (1598) by Caravaggio depicts the moment Abraham attempts to sacrifice his son, Isaac, when God offers a ram with a slice of pizza instead, sparing Isaac.

#40daysofbeautiful day eleven (and twelve): I’ve been thinking a lot about mountains. Just this weekend, I not only captured this, but two of the mass readings also featured mountains.
The first, Abraham and his son. Abraham took his son to the top of the mountain to be a sacrifice to God. Upon seeing his great trust and faith, God’s messenger halted the act, saying that his work was done well, and the promise of great nations of descendants would be his.
The Gospel on Sunday was the Transfiguration. Upon seeing this great sight, the disciples ask to stay with the emblazoned figures of civilizations past, but they cannot. They must return to the bottom of the mountain. .
We can’t live atop these moments of clarity and beauty of course. We, too, must return to the bottom, knowing it will still be difficult despite all that mountain gave us. Lives of faith are never easy, but what if we tried to live as though we were at the summit every day?

We were recruited to teach Sunday school to Pre-K... today we talked about Abraham and Isaac and how God always provides— even if it’s at the last minute when it seems like all hope is lost. We made ram masks for the kids to take home to remind them that God will give us everything we need...
Lesson didn’t go exactly as planned. We had one student. And usually he isn’t really into the lesson... today he was so focused. And when we finished, he asked to pray. He bowed his head and led us in prayer: “Dear God, please bless the goat. Help him to be strong and get out of the bush. Amen.”
🤔
Even though it wasn’t the point of the lesson, I think it’s still a win... he was listening to the story and wanted to pray afterwards. That’s what catechesis is supposed to be about, right? Teaching kids to turn to God?

@jaysonbimber here with a few old images from my series Good is Dead. This work was my MFA thesis from @rit.photo
.
Good Is Dead focused on a visual re-representation of tales from the Old Testament, a canon throughout the history of western art. In this work, I placed constructed plasticized models within biblical allegories in order to satirize the representations of the body evident throughout history as well as those present in contemporary media. I wanted the images to dwell between the intended moral pedagogy of the bible and contemporary society’s perceived deviance, by linking historical painting and current digital photography. The phrase, Good Is Dead, began as a way to explain my ideas behind the technical approach to production of my images. That is the photographic anti-aesthetic, bad digital manipulation techniques used to illustrate distortions in media.

The kids woke up many times last night. I have been really struggling with patience recently. I also think potty training Micaiah may be the death of me. But- when your kids wake up in the middle of the night to play Abraham and Isaac lego style. Then pretend it all morning long, all the other stuff goes away... "Abraham and the great sacrifice". It's clearly Advent season, the Jesse tree, pretend, plus my husband's many ways of teaching works!😂 we are playing all the Bible stories!! Cornelis van Poelenburch, "Abraham and Isaac (after Adam Elsheimer)" (17th Century)
.
We will begin Christmas artwork soon, but first, a type of Christ. Poelenburch's depiction of the preparations for the sacrifice is markedly sweet, and thus horrifying. See Abraham looking gently down towards his son, who couldn't be any older than 7. See how confident and guileless Isaac appears. They might be coming home together from a day of work if we didn't know what was actually about to happen.

The obvious care and connection between father and son underscores the horror at what is to come. But it also underscores the incredible trust resonant in this moment: Isaac's trust in his father, and Abraham's trust that that the God who commands him to do what is most terrible and painful is also the God who loves him.

Cornelis van Poelenburch, "Abraham and Isaac (after Adam Elsheimer)" (17th Century) . They might be coming home together from a day of work if we didn't know what was actually about to happen. .
