The Buffalo Dance - Not a native animal to Australia but introduced in the 1800’s. The invasive species causes massive damage to country, yet the feral animal has a dance dedicated to it at the opening ceremony of Taste of Kakadu Food Festival. If nothing else, this is a powerful representation of how indigenous people of Australia have adapted and harmonized with not just this invasive species, but many others too. There is little wonder why they have managed to live there for more than 60,000 years.

From time immemorial Aboriginal culture is spirit and being, a connectedness to land, water, air and spirit from before birth until birthing.🌿
The mother is in tune – song, dance, melody, art, creation.🌼
Woman, the carrier.
Mother, the giver.
Because of Her - we can.🙌🏼

This painting depicts an interpretation of the Emu Dreaming site and ceremonies associated with MenÕs Business. Ten years ago Kudditji began to experiment with paint to eradicate the pointillist style altogether and use a heavily loaded paint brush to sweep broadly across the canvas in stages, similar to the western landscape plane, these paintings were romantic images of his country, accentuating the colour and form of the landscape including the depth of the sky in the raining season and in the summer heat.

PADDY (JAMPIN) JAMINJI

Jaminji’s most emblematic paintings were of mythic creatures depicted in a figurate style such as devil-devils, and Tawurr, the Half Kangaroo that was transformed into a rock at Elgee Cliffs, the site of an ancient cave painting and Dreaming place. During the Krill Krill ceremony, the spirit stops to acknowledge Tawurr, ensuring the continuity of the spiritual powers that he imparted which are inscribed within the cliffs just as Jaminji’s painting aim to capture the spirit of this ancient being.

Despite their formal composition, Paddy Jaminji’s works emanate a sense of power and freedom befitting the work of a man deeply versed in his tradition who spent most of his life working with cattle and moving them across the land. He was the inspiration behind Rover's decision to paint and went on to inspire many others including Lena Nyabi. The themes for his works were derived from his own beliefs, cultural iconography and working experiences. It is this intimate knowledge of tradition and country that imbues his paintings with their deep meaning.

Some Aboriginal communities explain a solar eclipse as being the Sun-woman being hidden by the Moon-man as he makes love to her..
•
Others explain that a lunar eclipse is caused when the Moon-man is threatened by the Sun-woman who is pursuing him and perhaps catching up.
•
The stories linked to the eclipses are more than just a story about a man and a woman. The stories, when translated from ancient Aboriginal language to modern day English, cannot encapsulate the true meanings that can only be understood in language, felt in dance, expressed in art, and shared in ceremony.
•
& this is how this period should be taken, as there are no English words or road map to direct you through this path, but you know the way, if you give yourself the space...
•
...it is the merging of the yin and yang energy, it is the clash, the coming together, the blending, the absorbing, the altering...of the feminine and masculine...in our relationships, in ourselves, in our societies, in our world and in the cosmos.
•
What does it mean when the feminine and masculine come together? Life, creation? Conflict, war?
•
The sun dies, gives light to the moon...death and rebirth...a momentary light within the darkness...a moment of confrontation of our hidden selves...our masculine, our feminine, us in our entirety, others in their entirety...secrets, unrestrained emotions, dominance...
•
Our relationships come under the microscope, including the relationship with ourselves. Where do we belong? What is “home”? What is “family”? What is “love”?
•
It’s a beautifully, confusing, clarifying, revealing and powerful time. Let it take you for the ride. Just remember, you know the way, even when the words can’t quite articulate it, and at the end...remember to choose love over fear 🧡

Our Moorditj Mia group were invited to the @swandistrictsfc NAIDOC Week round, and enjoyed the best seats in the house!

This group also had a stall at @cityofswanwa celebrations, along with out Youth team who have our temporary tattoos and engaged young people about the women who inspired them.

We had a stand at the Deadly Job Expo, as part of Town of Bassendean's celebrations. We got to chat to lots of jobseekers and some of the opportunities at Rise.

Our Moorditj group in the south also attended the @cityofarmadalewa celebrations at Memorial Park, where they enjoyed dancing, a delicious lunch and seeing all the stalls.

Wow - what a great week it was!

☀️KALUMBURU ROAD - JULY 2018☀️
🐊🦈MCGOWANS SUNSET BEACH🦈🐊 13/7 - 17/7 (4 nights)
This place is absolutely amazing. It made the endless hours of red dirt, dust and corrugated roads worth it. About 20kms north of Kulumburu (the community) sits this little slice of paradise. The only sad thing is is that you are not allowed to swim in the most inviting water. It is filled with crocs and very large tiger and bull sharks. We got a cracker spot right on the beach. Fishing from here has been superb (to say the least). Together, the boys have caught enough fish for a year and even topping Personal Bests ( yes.... Brendan even caught a huge fish 🎣 that we all enjoyed, even him on the BBQ). There isn’t much to do here but sit back, read, fish and enjoy. We went for a drive around to Honeymoon Bay and I can tell you that McGowans is the pick of the bunch. You can’t even compare. The township of Kulumburu is aboriginal. There is a small food mart where they get fresh fruit, vege and produce delivered every Monday by barge. This place is so remote, although we are bumping into people we have met along the trip. People are very reluctant to bring vans up this far but from our experience, the road have been doable although we do go very slowly and carefully. The camp offers wifi, washing machines (honestly box) and charges $20 per person per night. Matt the caretaker is an awesome friendly man also!

Wollumbin “fighting chief of the mountains” watches over a sleepy Tweed Coast.
While many people climb to the summit of the mountain every year, it is actually discouraged by National Parks and Wildlife and the traditional custodians of the region, the Bundjalung people. Culturally, one must be initiated before being permitted to climb to the summit.

What a week for NAIDOC week 2018. I made it into Armadale Community Paper, Joondalup Paper, The West, was featured in a documentary shown on NITV and had my first exhibition. One week in a year isn’t enough all we can do is keep promoting and sharing to keep the next generation informed and educated #djurandidreaming #aboriginalculture #aboriginalart #aboriginaltourism #naidocweek #communitycanvas #sharingknowledge #cityofarmadale #cityofjoondalup #cityofrockingham 😊🎨👨🏾‍🎨

I have this artwork (sadly only in postcard form 😭😭) on my wall and it serves as daily inspiration. It's a work by Emily Kame Kngwarreye that was commissioned by @qagoma and produced during the final year of her life in 1996.
Last week, here in Australia, was Naidoc week and the theme was all about the role indigenous woman have and continue to play and although I'm a little late, I wanted to highlight Emily as a super creative role model. ✌️💕😘💕💕 “Although she engaged in ceremonial body-painting and mark making all her life, it was not until the early 1980s, after taking part in a community batik-making project in the 1970s, that Kngwarreye started painting with Western materials. All of Kngwarreye’s work is about one story — Alhalkere — her country, her people, her dreamings.” - GOMA (website)

These aren't just a bunch of #boomerangs lined up against a barbed wire fence. It represents so much more to me. It's connection. It's community. It's an invitation of one culture welcoming another. It's reconciliation and forgiveness. However, if not mindful, the barbs will strike. We must never be complacent. They strike via, ego, politics,or ignorance. Two cultures but one People who must stand united with love and respect. NAIDOC week is an awesome reminder to us all of the history and cultures it represents. We must embrace it all year round!

DAISY BATES ... one book written about her, the other written by her. Both fascinating accounts of her time living among the aboriginal people of WA and SA from 1919 to 1935 - alone in her tent and always dressed in the Edwardian mode with long skirts, boots, gloves and a veil. #daisybates #aboriginalculture #australianhistory #loveoldbooks #boobooksarmidale #iloveboobooks
Earlier in the month four Song Room program schools in Western Sydney gathered at The Mount Druitt Hub for their Deadly Arts Showcase.
.

Indigenous artists Danny Eastwood and Kevin May worked with the students at the schools teaching them to sketch key aboriginal symbols, paint boomerangs and begin to draw dreaming stories. They also got to experience the Nulungu Dreaming dancers who got all the kids involved with learning the Dolphin Dance! 🐬🐬
