Always happy to stumble across some Noongar language 💜 Last night was one of those beautiful lilac sunsets and as I was driving through South Perth on the way home from uni I caught a glimpse of it. I was about to get stuck in rush hour traffic so I pulled over by the river to watch the sun go down. I walked to the jetty next to the Boatshed Restaurant and saw this little sign 🖤
.
'Derbal Yerrigan' is the Noongar name for the Swan River so this says 'Welcome Welcome This 'Swan River' River'. You'll see Noongar words written with different spellings because it was recorded by different linguists, which is why you'll even see the word Noongar spelt a variety of ways, like Nyungar, Nyoongar and Nyungah. I'm learning the Merribank orthography and I would spell this 'Wandjoo Wandjoo nidja Derbal Yerigan bilya'.
.
I took a video of the water because it looked like something big was rolling under the surface 🏞🐍🏞

OTTO PAREROTJA

Otto Pareroultja was the oldest of three brothers that Rex Battarbee referred to as the ‘breakaway group’. They were amongst the new generation to follow Albert Namatjira as the watercolour landscape artists at the Lutheran mission of Hermannsburg. Pareroultja was twelve years younger than Namatjira, and despite Battarbee’s initial preference for works by Otto’s younger brother Edwin, it is the elder brother’s work that has been consistently compared with that of Namatjira. Even in 1947, when he first began painting, there were those who inferred that Otto’s works resonated with that of European modernists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gaugin in that his landscapes were distinguished by brilliant colour, dense patterning and ‘rhythmic pulsation’. {ARTWORK PROFILE}

Clifford Possum was one of the initial founders of the Western Desert Art Movement and the keeper of the mythologies associated with Mount Wedge (Kerrinyarra). They include the travels of possum, kangaroo, emu, snake, centipede, rock wallaby and a number of other ancestor beings related in song and ceremony as having passed through this place during the Dreamtime. This rare and important work, painted for Papunya Tula Artists in 1985, demonstrates Clifford Possum’s remarkable and decisively different vision in the representation of his Dreamings. The formal composition of his paintings set him apart from his contemporaries amongst other early Central and Western desert painters. In this visually arresting image he has depicted clan designs associated with Ulpulku, a site to the west of Mount Wedge. This is a rock wallaby site as seen by the tracks passing through the centre of the work. The roundels with U shapes on either side are campsites where ‘kungas’, young women, are seated. The necklets they wore during ceremonies are shown.

The exhibition will be on view at Cooee Art Gallery Paddington until the 8th September 2018. Please join us at the official opening with the artist on Saturday 25th August, 2pm.
Bonson shares stories of his Indigenous heritage through his paintings. SKIN is a celebration of his family’s totem – The Saltwater Crocodile. It too can be read as a landscape in its micro and macro states.

We are grateful for our connection with Tim @girrigirra . One of the biggest reasons why we started this playgroup was to offer families an opportunity to belong to something. Something that teaches us respect for each other and those who have cared for the land before us. This picture sings the pride we feel for our wonderful bush playgroup. #earlychildhood #alwayswasalwayswillbe #aboriginalculture #darkinjungcountry #stoneandsprocket #earlychildhood #bushplaygroup #girragirra

See how our schools celebrated NAIDOC Week throughout the end of Term 2 and the first weeks of Term 3.

Through liturgies, assemblies, presentations and learning activities, our schools have learned about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and acknowledged the significant history and presence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the many regions of our Diocese.

The new mural inside Stratton Edge Youth Centre is now complete!
The mural shows the six Aboriginal seasons, which are very colourfully represented!
Young people at the centre helped to paint this over two months, and had input into the design.

A big thanks to artist Lea Taylor for all her help!

The full story is on our blog.

PERFECT BEACH - 22km of white sand and no crowds

Beautiful Cable Beach on a balmy 30 degree day in July. The local aboriginal Yawuru people live by six seasons, which makes a lot of sense as it's based on the local changes in wind, rainfall and temperature, and the plants and animals.

Man-gala - The WET. Strong north-west winds.  wangal jarrangu (cyclones). December – March

Marrul - CHANGING season. Little wind or rain. Humidity drops. April – May

Wirralburu - COOLING season. Strong south-east winds. No rain. May – June.

Barrgana - COLD season. Strong dry south-easterly winds. guju-guju (dust storms). June – August

Wirlburu - WARMING-up season. Westerly winds start to blow. September – October

Laja - HOT time. Build up to wet season. Late September – November (must be very hot)

STORIES

Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory has one of the world’s greatest concentrations of rock art sites.  These cave art works provide an historical record of Aboriginal life over thousands of years.  This beautiful drawing is of a male figure, estimated to be from the Paleolithic era. This photo was taken on film.

History is a subject that really interests me. I think it is important to understand what has gone before to fully comprehend what is happening now. This applies at a human level, global, extending out to the universe.
As part of my job, I am fortunate to be able to share many life stories which help me understand and help people. As a curious traveller, I try to connect cultures, art, ideas, nature and historical events which helps understand each place I visit,. All elements threading together to create a meaningful story, connection and experience.
